Not to mention a bad case of the double posts!

In actual fact, as is typical of La Cheval, the truth is somewhat different. Given the usual assault and battery from the Barbs - which, I reiterate, have no place in the Duel format unless some way is found to have them affect each player equally - we were pretty close as stumps were drawn.

The second session proved slightly problematic, with more Barbs appearing out of the ground and wiping out two of my cities, but the fightback is now on. And going well.

La Cheval's address - the horse float, etc - is possibly the most apposite in the whole of the ACS forums.

Just a little update: Nappy and I are well into our game, but it's so darn close I have no illusions about finishing it in the next session. He destroyed two of my cities, but I'm still slightly ahead on the PG and in almost all demog categories.

Third session with finloser ended with me holding 12 cities and 28 units and the other guy 10 cities and 20 units. I have Great Wall. He's zip on wonders and has run out of money bribing my horses. First major military engagement was a resounding victory to the horse. The road to his capital is now open.

The fourth session was pretty quiet. Quiet that is, in the sense that Horse may have skipped away to a decisive advantage. At close of play finbar had 10 cities and 21 units, the quiet achiever A Horse had 16 cities and 46 units. Oh dear

oh yeah, I built MA' Chapel, fin built SunTsu and Hanging G. Its 1300AD.

Well. my match with Deity was finished today, he won. But it was a well deserved victory.

There's always the age old excuse of poor starting positions that signed your faith right at the start. I have to admit that my surroundings weren't exactly rosy at the start. I had to search for good city locations but I did manage to give Deity a run for his money (ehm...knights). Lost two cities after a large knight attack but I managed to destroy his first wave with a quick diplo bribe. After that I made a few counter attacks, dug in and hoped for the best, superior numbers finally got the better of me. Once Deity got Sun Tzu's there was no reason to continue so I conceded.

On a totally different note: Why not take a look at www.penny-arcade.com I did a few strips for "The Bench" there. Stay tuned, I'm planning a civ related one for next sunday

My condolences, Cap... Sounds like a well-fought game on both sides. I've registered the results on my cards.

Well, the next rounds will be MP, so different skills are rewarded. I'm sure we will see some changes in results then!

Milo & me are still at it. Two cautious old farts, fartin around.
But will keep you posted. He has magellans, but I have the happys...
Been an interesting game, we each destroyed a city, and no one can get a firm foothold on the other one yet. The sea plays an unusually important role in this game.

Wait a minute! "Old" & a "fart", maybe. But "cautious"? Not my nature!
It's only because i seem to have lost 80% of every even-odds attack & some not-so-even.
PLUS Crust's guardian spy angel ("initution", as he calls it) seems to tell him when, where, & exactly how many squares away my advancing units are!!!
PLUS he built the Wall & then turned all his frontline city squares to forests! (i hope the squirrels are eating all your food!)

At some point, even I get it thru my thick head that it's time to back off. Because in addition to being lucky & intuitive... this guy's VERY GOOD.

Overall, a most excellent & interesting diety 1x1x duel. Learning alot & trying alot of different tactics... since it's taking so long to knock this guy out. Sadly, in my SHO, wonders become WAY too important. Since either U get it or he does... end of story. And at 1x production that takes a MAJOR commitment!

Overall:
> he's been wonder-building & i'v been infrastructure-building.
> he's got interior lines concentrating his 20 cities in/on 1 continent(good for defense) & i'm on a #(state secret) of continents(good for trade).
> sea has become everything due to the archapelio world required + where our civ's adjoin = major mtn range (that i finally control but can't advance out of...see above).
> tech is SO SLOW in these games! Even with stealing tech's from every city we could both get to. ( ) It's mid-1800's & we are still using horses & sail to get around. At the rate we'r going, we'll be lucky to have bombers when it's time to launch for Alpha-Cent!
> i'v getting vet's via Sun's & he's getting upgrades via Leon's. An interesting matchup, would U say?
> he just completed Statue of Lib & i, Adam's. Again, an interesting match in light of the current Strategy thread disussion about "Which wonder would U build?". He just got any gov't instantly & i just got major gold savings (for all those improvements i'v been building)
> as for gold & research; he's been taxing & reseaching the _____ out of his citzens since they're SO happy (gr-r-r-r) & i'v been sending caravans from my well-developed cities to his nice big river port cities ( )
=======================================
Sorry it's taking so long. But as U can tell, it's back & forth. Tho i am "Supreme Power" & lead the Powergraph, i'm not about to assume victory against Crusty (& his angel). I'm afraid this 1 will go down to the wire.
Because of that + real life commitments, Cave, U may want to get the 3rd round started if possible.
As i understand, AH & fin are still at it also. Perhaps U can match up around us/them as the 4 players for the 1st "team" round when all finish?

JUST LOOK AT THE CASUALTY REPORT AND YOU WILL SEE THAT IS AN EXAGERATED STATEMENT, BUT I DO HAVE A LEAD IN DESTROYING MORE OF YER STUFF I LOVED LIGHTHOUSE WHILE IT LASTED.

PLUS Crust's guardian spy angel ("initution", as he calls it) seems to tell him when, where, & exactly how many squares away my advancing units are!!!

WE RESTARTED FROM AN EARLIER SAVE ONCE AND
THAT HELPED MINIMIZE THE "LUCK FACTOR" ON A COUPLE EVENTS TO BE MORE IN YOUR FAVOR THE SECOD TIME AROUND. I ONLY WISH I COULD KNOW WHERE YOU WERE BETTER SO AS TO KEEP YOUR SCIENCE PROGRAM TO A MINIMUM AND KEEP MY SHIPS FROM PATROLING SO CLOSE TO HOME AFRAID TO WANDER OUT INTO THE VAST SEA YOU PRESENTLY CONTROL. SNEAKING AROUND MY CITIES IS RISKY BUISNESS WHEN ATTACK FACTOR RICH SHIPS ARE THERE EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE A 2 MOVEMENT FACTOR ADVANTAGE. IT'S LIKE COME ON...COME ON...WHAP!!!! WELL THAT IS MY PLAN ANYWAYS HEHEHE

WHEN YOU PUT YOURSELF IN THE OTHER PERSONS SHOES AND ASK WHAT WOULD THEY HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO BEST GET ME THEN YOU HAVE A CLOSE IDEA WHERE THEY WILL GO ....WELL USUALLY!

Oh yes I did notice a 6 knight loss for you compared to none for me on casualty report. I love vet pikes! Maybe a couple of them sank in the "turbulant seas" in the area too?

If I can ever get on the offensive here I am sure the defenders advantage will be history. Look what it cost me to destroy your city that my cartographers discovered and cripled and I was determined to finnish off.

This is a good game, and I like it when it is not way one side right away so we can each feel like we have a fighting chance for awhile.

You are a clever opponant too, and I look foreward to more games with you in the future on a less competative basis.

Thanks CapTVK - it was a great game. From being a novice at duels a few weeks ago, when I was playing them like MP games I now feel I've got the hang of it! I love working out formulas for victory

You played well from tricky beginnings.
I started in a barb hotspot. (Yes cavebear, we forgot to set it at roving!) But I turned it to my advantage. Very early I thought I might lose 3 cities to the Barbs and it took all my efforts to move my limited troops in such a way so as to avoid any pop loss and maximise the ransoms - and I was very happy with the results indeed I was sure I was cactus at one stage but it really pays to meet the barbs head on.

Cap and I were quite close so once I discovered him the war machine began

Although duels will never replace the good old MP game I like them a bit more than I use to. But if I lose I'll probably hate them again

I might duel the Horse sometime - the Aussie ranks are thickening with great skill...

I'll try to keep the MP games as close in time zones as possible, but there is the conflicting requirement to also try to keep the highest-scoring players in competition.

And, sometimes, time zones are not the determining factor in availability for play. Some people are day-players, some are night-owls. I'll look at everyone's home time zone, but we may also have to compare available playing times.
