Butter or Margerine
I got yet another interesting e-mail from my mother today. How much of this is true??

Quote:
DO YOU KNOW...

The difference between margarine and butter?

Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher

in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over

eating the same amount of butter according to a recent Harvard Medical

Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients

in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine

has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the

flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been

around for less than 100 years. Now for Margarine...

Very high in Trans Fatty Acids... Triple risk of Coronary Heart

Disease...

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol)

Lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) .... Increases

the risk of cancers by up to five fold...

Lowers quality of breast milk ... Decreases immune response...

Decreases insulin response. And here is the most disturbing fact....

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC...This

fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and

anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added,

changing the molecular structure of the substance).

YOU can try this yourself: purchase a tub of margarine and leave

it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note

a couple of things: no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go

near it (that should tell you something) ... it does not rot or smell

differently...because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on

it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to

grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic.

Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

How very enlightened. This "margarine is almost plastic omg" line of reasoning detracts from the credibility of the whole thing, it's something the old lady next door might say.

Edit - http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/butter.asp

Not that far-fetched at all then...

What, there actually is a brand called "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter?" Whoa.

What is the point of moaning about margarine being artificial and potentially unhealthy? I've got a feeling that margarine is among the least artificial and dangerous things that you eat every day. Ever paused to think what goes into all your favourite foods?
It may say "flavouring" on the list of ingredients, but I'm sure you'd be more worried if you knew what all of these different flavourings are made of.

Is it me, or do people who worry about their health tend to be sicker than those who don't? Or am I confusing a cause-effect correlation here?

Sicker 'physically' or 'mentally'?

I don't eat much, but margarine. I've had around 250g of the stuff in about two months - it's likely to go off before I finish it. I use Olivio.

Our margarine has taste. But I prefer butter. I like the fact that it's more solid.

The first post sounds a good enough excuse to me.

I prefer butter on anything where I want the taste of it, but everything in moderation, remember

This makes the whole thing seem like bullshit. So? Water, something used to fight fire, is made of hydrogen (an extremely flammable substance) and oxygen (an extremely flammable substance). Does that mean water is flammable?

The issue aboiut hydorgenated fats is the molecular shape primeraly, IIRC, and this is very important, in molecular terms.

I like no substitues..non-dairy creamer? Heck no, Cream!
Diet Soda? Hell no, regular
Light Beer? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soy items in the shape of meat? Nope
Margerine? Nope, BUTTER.

If you don;t want the original, then move on, you fakers!

I stopped eating margarine a couple years ago, basically because of what first says. Oh and what Gepep wrote
Same thing goes for ice-cream: it's made with cream !! not low fat milk or water, dammit!!
