Deputies searching Jackson’s ranch
dont see a thread about this.... (strange )
Quote:
Deputies searching Jackson’s ranch

Michael Jackson is denouncing media coverage of the search of his home. In a statement, Jackson criticizes those who've been speaking about the case, saying these "characters," as he calls them, don't know what they're talking about.
Ventre: Jackson still doesn't get it

MORE THAN 20 investigators from the Santa Barbara County sheriff's and district attorney's offices served a warrant as part of an "ongoing criminal investigation," Sgt. Chris Pappas said. No immediate arrests were made.

Court TV reported that the search was being executed under the direction of Santa Barbara County District Attorney Tom Sneddon based on allegations of sexual abuse brought by a 12-year-old Los Angeles boy.

Jackson's spokesman says neither he nor Jackson know what the investigation is about. Authorities only say the search is part of an ongoing criminal probe.

In the statement, Jackson gripes people seem to surface with what he calls "a dreadful allegation" just as he's releasing a new project. Jackson's latest album, "Number Ones," a greatest hits collection featuring his new single, "One More Chance," is in stores today.

Jackson and his three young children were not at the ranch at the time, said his spokesman, Stuart Backerman. They have been in Las Vegas, where Jackson is making a video, he said.

Backerman declined further comment, saying he lacked detailed information about the purpose of the investigation.

A "convoy" of law enforcement vehicles, including a forensic evidence collection vehicle and an ambulance passed through the gates at Neverland, which is located in the Santa Ynez Valley outside of Santa Barbara. The ambulance left the scene shortly afterward.

A Court TV reporter said a portable toilet was brought to the scene, indicating perhaps that law enforcement officers will be there "for quite some time."

ALBUM RELEASED
The singer who had international hits with the albums "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" (1987) and "Dangerous" (1991), saw his career begin to collapse in 1993 amid allegations he molested a boy. Jackson has maintained his innocence, and charges were never filed. He reportedly paid a multimillion-dollar settlement.

Jackson is also connected to Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano, who began serving federal prison time Monday for possessing illegal explosives. Pellicano is being investigated about whether he secretly taped conversations of celebrities and their lawyers.

Pellicano, 59, worked for Jackson as a spokesman and security consultant during the abuse investigation.

On Nov. 26, CBS is scheduled to air a Jackson special consisting mainly of old concert footage

ok, different news

"stupid company spending money on lawyers" award goes to
Quote:
SCO to pay lawyers millions for more legal firepower

It plans to take an $8.9M charge in Q4 for legal fees

Story by Scarlet Pruitt

NOVEMBER 18, 2003 ( IDG NEWS SERVICE ) - Unix developer The SCO Group Inc. said today that it is extending an agreement with its lawyers to defend itself against new copyright issues in a move that will take a multimillion-dollar bite out of its fourth-quarter 2003 financial results to go toward paying legal fees.

The company, which is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with IBM over a Unix license, said it plans to take a charge of $8,956,000 in its fourth quarter, which ended Oct. 31, to pay Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP and other law firms representing SCO. Of that total, $1 million will be paid in cash, and the remaining amount will go toward the issuance of 400,000 shares of common stock, the company said.

In addition, SCO said that it plans to take another $8,741,000 noncash charge for the fourth quarter of 2003 related to the issue of Series A Convertible Preferred Stock.

Despite the nearly $17.7 million in charges, SCO said it is holding to its previous fourth-quarter guidance of revenue between $22 million and $25 million. The company is due to release its fourth-quarter and fiscal-year 2003 results on Dec. 8.

With the additional legal representation, SCO is looking to up the ante in the defense of its intellectual property. The company said Boies, Schiller & Flexner will now be dealing with issues related to copyrighted Unix code incorporated into Linux without authorization of appropriate copyright notices. SCO said that code identified includes Unix System V and copyrighted code covered in the 1994 settlement between Unix Systems Laboratories Inc. and Berkeley Software Design Inc. SCO said it bought this code and its associated copyrights from Novell Inc. in 1995.

The expanded legal agreement with SCO's lawyers concerns issues outside of SCO's current legal brawl with IBM. The Lindon, Utah-based company sued IBM for $1 billion in March, claiming that IBM had tried to destroy the economic value of Unix to benefit its Linux services business.

SCO and its lawyers planned to detail their new legal agreement and its effect on the company's financial results later today.

In related news, SCO CEO Darl McBride told IDG News Service in an interview yesterday that the company might take legal action against Novell because its $210 million bid for SUSE Linux AG violates a noncompete agreement.

The noncompete agreement is part of a broader deal signed between Novell and The Santa Cruz Operation Inc. when Novell sold the rights to its Unix System V software in 1995, McBride said. The SCO Group (formerly Caldera Systems Inc.) inherited the noncompete agreement, along with the Unix rights, when it acquired Santa Cruz Operation's Unix business in 2000, he said.

The agreement prohibits Novell from directly competing with SCO's Unix-on-Intel business, McBride said. "When [The Santa Cruz Operation] sold us the property, included in the property was a noncompete. Last time I checked, Linux was intended to compete with our core products."

The noncompete agreement is only one of several legal avenues that SCO is considering should the SUSE acquisition take place, according to McBride. SCO also believes that Novell doesn't have the right to distribute Linux, which SCO alleges to contain intellectual property that has been derived and copied directly from its Unix System V code.

Novell greatly enhanced its legal risks "by getting into this Linux game," McBride said.

markg, you think sco is bad about that? get this... our dear darl mcbride said that the only two industries that use the term "users" are software and drug use.

that's gonna go over well with their users, er, customers.

Damn I figured at least some of this was behind him, with the big out-of-court settlements and all. Makes me wonder if molesters can ever be truly reformed.

Q^3; manufacturing uses the term "users" to differentiate between the actual manufacturing personnel and the support groups. More common amongst machine builders and engineers.
