Tale of the years, 1852-1855
This starts after the chat finished.

1853:

Investigate Mycenae:

3 vet riflemen.

Next turn I am going to drive for Pharsalos and to run the table on the Wonders.

6th diplomat takes down the citywalls.

1st Calvary stomps 1st rifleman
2nd Calvary drubs 2nd rifleman
3rd Calvary pummels 3rd rifleman

We take Mycenae, stealing 30 gold.

We only need two squares of railroad next turn to reach Pharsalos.
3 for Delphi. Next turn I ought to be able to deploy cannons rather than just calvary as the entire front will be connected by railroad to the rest of the Imperium.

Remaining:

German

Nuremburg, Issus, Naples and Turin.

Greeks:

Pharsalos (Sun Tzu's)
Athens (Capital)

20 other cities.

So that leaves 26 in total down from

8 + 26 = 34 in 1852.

IN THE CHAT!

We have captured the Greek cities of Eretria, Halicarnassus, Tegea and Cremona.

We have captured the German cities of Cannae and Rammstein.

We razed Stettin and Capua, to halve the Germans from 8 cities to 4.

Next turn, we ought to have troops in the valley of Nuremburg, following the construction of the railroad.

Now, if I maintain my pace of 4 cities / turn, over 4 turns I will conquer 16 cities, out of a total of 34.

32 calvary
43 cannons
36 diplomats

I'll want to get my diplomats back over 50 and my calvary up 45.

Not much available for purchase, so I will need to delay these upgrades until next turn.

1854:

Greek counterattack kills alpine near Athens.
Takes 2 calvary to kill the Alpine.

Time to start the drive for Pharsalos.

Railroad into Pharsalos completed.
1 Alpine, 2 riflemen all vet behind citywalls in the garrison.

9 diplomats finally take down the walls.
Time to call out the cannons!

1st Cannon rocks Alpine troop.
2nd Cannon smashes Rifleman
3rd Cannon unluckily loses to 3rd Rifleman
Non-vet Calvary promoted against remains of 3rd rifleman.

Vet Calvary heals himself by capturing Pharsalos!

Investigate Delphi.

1 rifleman.
1st Cannon rams rifleman.
2nd Cannon chops his block off.
Vet Calvary heals himself.

We capture Delphi.

Discover Greek city of Knossos.

Knossos, Heraklea, Corinth all accessable to calvary.

Knossos probably best bet, not on a river square.
3 rifles, all likely vets.

Well, no guts, no glory.

First 3 calvary lose. Last does poorly.

4th calvary storms 1st rifleman.

5th and sixth calvary lose.

Promote 7th and 8th calvary.

Capture Knossos!

Do unit inventory, I have 19 wounded calvary already deployed to Greek front over last few turns.

There are 6 unavailable, either scouting, or in cities without connections to railroad.

2 wounded Calvary outside Rammstein.

That leaves 2 in my available pool.
The charges stop here. Fortify rifleman on Mountain near Corinth to guard the engineers, as they construct a railroad through the heart of Greek territory.

I need more diplomats and Calvary.

Barbs flee Isandhlwana.

Seige of Ephesos completed. I had failed to take the city last turn, but this turn I add the city size 11 to our total.

Ephesos taken!

Vet Rifleman punishes Calvary outside the city.

LMFAO!

Pop a hut near Nuremburg!
Hut gives me 100 gold!

Rushbuild all my units for next turn.

1855:

Greek calvary approach but do not attack.

Barbarian raiding party nearly captures Atlanta!

Bribe barbarian dragoon, boat, and slay leader.
Much better.

81 diplomats
57 calvary.
43 cannons.

Non-vet Rifle on mountain smites Greek Calvary.
Clears way for Athens and Corinth.

Investigate Athens.
3 Riflemen, behind citywalls, on a river. Going to need some of those diplomats.

Investigate Corinth.
2 alpine troops, 1 rifleman, 2 calvary. All behind citywalls on a river.

This is the heart of Greece. If both of these cities fall, the Greeks will not have enough money to relocate their capital.

Explore area around Nuremburg. Yes! They built a railroad across the river.

It's cannon time.

Railroad built into Nuremburg.
Investigate Nuremburg.
3 Alpine Troops, 3 riflemen, all behind citywalls. This is Frederick's last stand.

1st diplomat sabotages walls!

You're going down Frederick!

All 6 cannons win.

Road now built to the three remaining German cities. 1 has a railroad.

Cannons crush Issus. 2 left.
Riflemen seize Naples. 1 left.
Calvary storm Turin.

GERMANS ARE OUT!

And then there was 1.

Now, back to the Greeks.

5th dip sabotages Athens citywalls.

1st Cannon does okay.
2nd Cannon nearly wins.
3rd Cannon nearly wins.
4th Cannon does okay.
5th Cannon wastes rifleman
6th Cannon roasts rifleman
Imperium Calvary promoted.
Weak Calvary acquires Athens.

We take Athens.

Greek capital moves to Corinth. They now have 127 gold. Please switch your government.

The Seige of Corinth begins.

7th diplomat sabotages citywalls.

1st Cannon almost kills Alpine.
2nd Cannon almost kills Alpine.
3rd Cannon slaughters rifleman
4th Cannon minces calvary
5th Cannon shreds calvary
Calvary mops up first 2 alpines.

CORINTH TAKEN!

Greeks fail to relocate capital. 16 cities remaining.

Greek Eastern Front opened up.

Calvary crush Cunaxa. 15 more Greek cities.

Uncover Naples. All Greek cities have been pinpointed. The two not uncovered:

Syracuse, Gortyn.
Gortyn is at 154,76 Syracuse, 182,96 most likely. Must be SW of Phocaea.

I have access to 4 more Greek cities, I hope to take them all depending on how well my calvary play.

I fell asleep last night, so I'll finish up this afternoon.

The only negative I see is that I predicted long ago that the Germans would outlast the Greeks ....but aside from the fact that I am wrong , I am very pleased with the results . The Germans are eliminated and it seems it is merely a matter of wiping up what remains of the Greeks.

One of the things we discussed in the chat was whether there was a need to play again next week or if Ben could wipe up the remaining cities without our input. What do our citizens think on this point?

In my opinion the game is pretty much a foregone conclusion, the city planner report will essentially contain:
1) Build more diplomats
2) Build more cannon
3) Build more calvary
4) See 1-3

I don't see any reason to wait for further polls or opinions.

Just finish it off, unless the military advisor has any other suggestions and needs to poll on those.

I suspect the Foreign, Science, and City Planning Ministries won't have anything to add... just do more of the same.

Okeydokey.

I'll play on and keep taking screenshots.

Shouldn't take more than 2-3 turns at this point.

The biggest problem may prove to be Miletos.

Yes, end it. There really isn't anything for us citizens to participate in at this point. Give us a brief description of the end of the Greeks and a screenshot of the final world unifested by heathen scum.

Time to start planning Demo Game #4...

We had some difficult times in this one, and there were some real challenges. I even wondered at an earlier time BE (Before Engineers) if we would be able to conquor everyone before the years ran out.

I wonder if we can follow the same restrictions as this game, but play on an island world and start on an island out of Trireme-range of other land? It might be interesting to have no knowledge of the other civs until they are quite well-developed. I also wonder if there is a way to have Wonders expire if we acquire them. Can expiration be made civ-specific?

We might as well push the envelope until we actually lose a game.

WE could just make a pact to raze any city with wonders, and to avoid takng any city with wondres until the very end.

maybe a little other idea:
someone starts a game, specific location and improvement orders.
This game should then be played untill all AI have grown big and strong(human is not allowed to interfere, should live nicely alone on a little island or 2) and we start playing from this endgame situation. We start from almost 0 (eg have all techs(dito AI), but only 5 a 10 cities in a world with the AI beeing master of at least 100 cities, having 500G and 2(or3)units/city)
Something like settling 2000AD in a hostile world, from this micro-country we start builing an army and conquer the world.
(I'll post an example of what I mean this evening)

Is that not just a scenario to be built? It would be quite boring to just sit there and press return for hours while the AI messed about. If you began that as a scenario then you'd have the choice of the map, where the AI cities were, and wich techs each would have. This would be more of a challenge than just letting nature take its course, and there'd be more turns in which to win/lose.
Otherwise all of the AI civs would be dragged down by the fact the human player (us) has a 0 research level and it'd take them forever to get through the tech tree. The human would also then begin the game as weak, so could just beg their way up to tech parity in no time through an alliance.

Anyway, shall I start a separate thread for speculation, or shall we keep it all here?

Use dips to take down the papers' defences and then whack them with vet cavalry!

Seriously, good luck with your work.

Thanks. One short one to finish today, and then I've got 3 exams before the 10th of December. After that I get 3 weeks off!

Plus my girlfriend loved her surprise birthday party yesterday and wants to go out with me tonight.

Use dips to take down her defences and then....

Er, maybe not this time.

Best of luck with the turns then. It should be a walkover. Then you can concentrate on those unimportant RL things like exams.

Um, can we please get this game ended? It has been since Nov 23rd for the previous session and today is Dec 1st...

Technically, the current term of office is over, and I don't think we want to go through elections just to finish things.

Alrighty.

Picking things up where we left off.

1855:

We have 1 remaining foe, the Greeks with 14 cities.

Marathon now has a railroad connected to Pergamon, and to the remainder of the Imperium.

I'll think I'll start in the East. Naples has 2 riflemen on a river, only accessable to Calvary.

5 diplomats, the citywalls were the last to fall.

Both Calvary win, Naples captured. 13 Greek cities remain.

Moving on to Troy.

Since they have 4 units in the city, I'm going to take down the citywalls. 1 Alpine and 3 Riflemen.

6th Diplomat sabotages citywalls.

4 calvary all win. Troy captured. 12 Greek cities remain.

That will be all for the Eastern Front. I need 9 squares of railroad to connect the East with the Western front.

Going to the Western front.

Inaccessible cities behind the front are Miletos, Gortyn and Heraklea. All are in the Greek pocket cut off due to difficult terrain. Thessolonika in the South also cut off due to difficult terrain.

Marathon accessible to Cannons.

Sparta, Thermopylae are accessible to Calvary.

That will leave the remainder of the Eastern Front accessible next turn to cannon once we build railroad to all the cities.

Artemesium, Sicyon, Capua, Phocaea, Syracuse will be the goals for that front next turn.

Calvary will be directed to Thermopylae and Sparta next turn.

Deploy Cannons to Marathon. 4 units, again behind citywalls. Might as well use diplomats.

9 diplomats available, 5 calvary and 10 cannon.

Switch targets to Sparta. If I run out of diplomats, I can charge Marathon with Cannons.

Walls fall in Sparta.

Calvary approach the city.

1st calvary defeated by Alpine.
2nd calvary falls to rifleman.
3rd calvary falters against rifleman.
4th calvary rocks Alpine troop.
5th calvary crushes rifleman.
6th calvary unluckily loses to rifleman. C'mon!
7th calvary drills dragoon, cannon.
8th calvary nails cannon, final rifleman.

Sparta down to size 2!

Greeks have 11 cities.
Now for Marathon. I used all my available calvary, so I will use the Diplomats here rather than on Thermopylae, which will have to wait for next turn.

7 diplomats fail to take down citywalls of Marathon.

So much for my gambit. I have 0 diplomats available on the railroad. All the others are in my isolated pockets. Troops are all vets as well. Decline to further attack marathon leaving Engineers exposed. 1

Cannons clear out roving Greek units.

Roads built to make Thermopylae, Gortyn accessible to calvary next turn.

Since I'm a couple turns away, refrain from building units from scratch. Mostly diplomats, and a few cannons and calvary bought.

1856.

Now up to 58 diplomats, so I built 25 last turn.

43 calvary, 38 cannons.

Railroad built to Rhodes pocket. 8 more diplomats no longer isolated.

Railroad built to Sicyon.
Diplomats investigate Sicyon, two riflemen.

Deploy cannons from Rhodes pocket, both lose.
Calvary storm garrison in Rhodes.
Capture city!

Ten Greek cities remain.

Railroad built to Phocaea. Investigate line West of Phocaea.
It crosses the hills.

Railroad built to Marathon. The Eastern and Western fronts converge on Marathon.

2 diplomats destroy the city walls of Marathon.

4 cannons win without a loss.
Vet calvary takes the city.
9 Greek cities remain.

Next up, Phocaea!

Capua accessable to calvary
Syracuse accessable to calvary.

Artemesium, Gortyn, Thessalonika all accessable to Calvary.

That leaves 1 city, Miletos.

Railroad built to hills.
Vet Alpine troop and 2 engineers deployed. If they still have a cannon in the garrison, we will soon know.

Investigate Phocaea. 4 riflemen.

Railroad built to Syracuse.
Investigate Syracuse. 2 riflemen.

No need for diplomats here.

1st two cannons lose.
3rd cannon crushes rifleman.
4th cannon barely loses to rifleman.
Our rifleman finishes off the garrison.

Syracuse taken!
8 more Greek cities remain.

Railroad built into Artemesium.
Investigate city.
1 Alpine, 2 riflemen.

Charge Capua.
1 musketeer.
Calvary defeats musket.
Capua captured.
7 more Greek cities.

Back to Phocaea.
4th diplomat busts walls.
All 4 cannons win.

6 more Greek cities left.

Decide to charge Artemesium.
First cannon does well against Alpine.

Cannons 2-5 wound garrison, nearly killing 2nd Rifleman.
1st Calvary wounds Alpine troop.
2nd Calvary kills Alpine troop, 3rd Rifleman.
3rd Calvary stomps 2nd Rifleman.

Artemesium captured!
5 more Greek cities.

GREEK EASTERN FRONT FINISHED!

Now for some of the more difficult city terrains.

Investigate Thermopylae.
1 Alpine, 3 riflemen.
Need to take down citywalls.

Every remaining Greek city will require me to take down the walls.

5th diplomat smashes the walls.

1st calvary loses to Alpine.
2nd and 3rd calvary crush riflemen.
Alpine troop skies over the hills to beat down last Alpine troop.
Dragoons capture Thessolonika.

4 more Greek cities:

Thermopylae, Heraclea, Gortyn and Miletos.

Only three of these are accessible this turn.

Build road to Thermopylae. Now I only lose 1/3 of a move to reach the city.

Investigate Thermopylae. 3 riflemen, on a river.
8 diplomats finally take down the walls.

1st calvary does horrible.
2nd calvary almost wins
3rd calvary just loses.
4th calvary loses to the awesome 1st rifleman.
5th calvary smites the awesome rifleman.
1st rifleman promoted.
2nd rifleman promoted.

Thermopylae finally captured.

3 Greek cities.

Investigate Heraclea.

36 production!
3 riflemen.

Investigate Gortyn.
1 alpine, 2 riflemen.
Only 5 improvements.

I'm going to hold here for this turn.

It looks like it is going to take 8 calvary to take Gortyn, and 6 to take Heraclea.

Estimate 5-6 to take Miletos, because the city is not on a river.

To be safe, I will need to produce 20 calvary to supplement my available units and to capture all 3 cities.

Worst case for diplomats, 13 in Heraclea, and 5 in Gortyn.

Probably 10 for Miletos, so I will need close to 30 diplomats.

Numbers are 33 calvary, 25 cannons and 26 diplomats.

Deployments to Miletos completed. I have 2 vet Alpine troops, 1 on the mountain, and another on the hill. I have 3 engineers under each group, so they will need to destroy both groups to prevent a road from going into Miletos next turn, followed by a horde of calvary and diplomats.

I will leave this city for last, after I defeat Gortyn and Heraclea.

Rushing every city, plus a few extra brings me down from 9.5K to 2K. I expect 30 fresh calvary next turn.

1857:

THE FINAL YEAR.

State of the Army.

25 Cannons.
63 Calvary
92 Diplomats.

Barbs slay wandering diplomat.

Road built into Miletos.

2 Alpine Troops, 2 riflemen.

5th diplomat smashes the Walls of Gortyn.

Now for Heraclea.

9th Diplomat destroys walls!

1 more left.

8th diplomat toasts the walls of Miletos.

Time for the Calvary.

Selecting Gortyn, with 1 Alpine troop and 2 riflemen on a river.

1st Calvary loses.
2nd Calvary loses.
3rd Calvary badly beaten by riflemen.
4th Calvary bashes alpine troop.
5th Calvary loses to the king of rifles. C'mon!
6th Calvary erases rifleman.
Rifleman spanks last unit with one hp remaining.

IMPERIUM CAPTURE GORTYN!

Now, for Heraklea.

3 riflemen, all on a river. This is the second most difficult of the remaining garrisons.

1st Calvary loses.
2nd Calvary loses badly.
3rd Calvary smashes rifleman.
4th Calvary loses badly to the same rifleman. 2 vet calvary, not behind a city wall, and he's still in the yellow.
5th Calvary rolls rifleman.
Rifleman skewers last rifle in Heraklea.

IMPERIUM CAPTURE HERAKLEA.

We capture MAGELLAN'S EXPEDITION.

We now own every wonder in the game.

Now, for the last city. Miletos.

2 Alpines, 2 riflemen, not on a river.

1st Calvary loses to 1st Alpine
2nd Calvary storms 1st Rifleman.

Looks like that other Alpine is not vet.
3rd Calvary crushes 2nd Rifleman
4th Calvary drills 2nd Alpine. With 2/3 polishes off 1st Alpine.
5th Calvary, our mighty men from Bear's Cave march on the final stronghold of the once Glorious Greeks.

Da Save.

I'll have other shots as well, but I'm going to eat.

Well done Kenobi San - and all the ministers - and all previous leaders and ministers.

Well it's make your mind up time as far as the next democracy game is concerned.

Nice work Ben.
I have to admit having a dumb grin on my face when you said that we had 63 cavalry and 92 dips to polish off three cities.
And surprise - we won!
I call that we dedicate this victory to the memory of SG(2).

But special thanks to Ben's girlfriend too.

I may have had only the briefest of contact with SG(2), but, hear hear!

Indeed.

It's just a shame we did not have a naval battle.

I'm not sure Denise would appreciate the dedication. She's not a gamer. However, I do appreciate the thought.
