Similar thing just happened to me...AI captured a treb within my borders and instead of escorting it back or disbanding it, it escorted along with its assault force towards my nearest city and started bombarding me!!!

Yes!, now the IA knows how to use arty...
Perhaps it's skill with it depends on difficulty levels...
..what difficulty were you playing??

Oh the AI alway built them, remember you capture them in thir cities. It just rarely used them outside of defensively.

I don't wish to rain on anyone's parade but.... ONE catapult! Tell me the AI wheeled in a stack of a dozen artillery and I'll be impressed (and slightly worried).

I am impressed anyway - remember that he said that the AI had "Captured" the Treb ... there probably wasnt a dozen for the AI to capture 
EDIT - hmm not quite - it was the second poster that said his had been captured
