The Largest Vacation Ever
The trip is for work. I'm going to be living in France for a while, or as odd as it may seem, I will be treking over to Japan. My finger is more near France. I will be living in Paris for probably two years. Actually, let me rephrase that. I will be living in Paris for a few months, then I will be in other European cities such as Berlin (and some other city in Germany), I'll be in Italy (not sure what city yet, or cities), and finally, I'll be over in London. I might take a trip just for fun to Greece, but we'll see.

So, while you may have thought this thread is for a scenario, I'm afraid its not.

I'll be gone for a while, as you can see. Not starting until next week now (was going to be tomorrow until recently).

When I get back, I'll be sure to stop by if I remember to.

I will have access to the Internet, I believe. If so, I could try to post while I'm there, but there is little chance. I will work on my Mars Project scenario while there, hopefully, even though when I get back Civ2 will be gone and Civ3 will be in place.

This will be weird living away from my home for so long. I'm basically moving to Europe!

Bye, folks!

Come on! Half the people who post here live in countries other than the USA... Spanish Civ Site, Alex Mor, ANZAC...
There is nothing to it just get an transportable AOL account and stay on. I've been travelling for years now and I never miss connecting to the Internet from a Hotel room in the remote parts of the world... I made most of Red Front while living in a hotel in Taiwan!
It's actually a nice way to stay in touch with something familiar when you feel lost in a new environment.

Hi George, Nemo is right, a trip to Europe is no excuse for stop posting or creating scns, even if you stay longer here

But welcome to the old world!

Actually, folks, good news.

I called my boss 5 minutes ago. My originally scheduled vacation is being taken by another employee, but I get to go and meet up with him for another year this coming up January.

This gives me mucho time to plan my vacation, however.

If anyone lives in areas I mentioned, please post here some places I should go.

Bernd, any German spots I should see for a peaceful reading of a book? The Garden in France is fun for this, but any place in Germany I could do it?

And Italy, wow. So much to see.

France, been there done that.

As for London, that is a forced destination.

This still makes me a bit sad. Right when Civ3 comes out, I won't be around to test it out.

You poor thing! A year of touring Europe. George, I'd say it's time to start saving for a good laptop. I made all my early scenarios on one from work. It's all I had for a couple of years. Don't leave home without it! (Civ2 that is)

Don't miss the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum if you're in Vienna.

I've been to everything in France, Nemo. Ten times.

Normandy needs another visit, I'd say. Good idea.

I got a good few months to plan this trip, so I'm happy now. How about in Greece? Anything to see besides the obvious (Ancient Greek ruins, things like that).

In the laptop area, I have a 600 MHz DELL Inspiron with the high res 15" Active Matrix screen.
My experience: Buy something with a 3 year full warranty because those displays are quite fragile and VERY expensive to repair/replace.

With my current, out of date laptop, the screen turns white and I have to bang on the back of it to become clear again.

Polaris:
Unfortunately France is what I know best too (Lived there 22 years). Most of the other countries I have only been a few times.
Greece has some very nice country, a vacation paradise to frozen Northern Europeans, tons of interesting ancient history. Crete, Athens, Meteora are just a few spots to check out.
Italy is great (Venice, Florence, Pompei and Rome are must sees). Sicily is kind of a savage place.
Spain has some great stuff too, from Roman times and Islamic occupation. Love the people and the country. Not as spoiled by tourists as Italy is.
Other superb historical cities to see: Copenhagen, St Petersburg (Leningrad), Vienna.
Ireland has wonderful nature and some very interesting medieval history...but watch out for their beer!
And personally I love the French Alps... great skiing!

George, I´m sure there are some nice green places in Berlin-Friedrichshain or Berlin-Tiergarten (directly in the city) for reading. Or take a very short trip by car from Berlin to Potsdam and visit Sannssouci, there are nice gardens too. Mainly in western and southern Germany, some cities have these nice reconstructed medieval city cores, any street café should be a good place in the summer here...

Some interesting places to visit:

Berlin - Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, lots of museums (e.g with the Pergamon Shrine, or the Ishtar Gate) etc, etc

Potsdam, Dresden - for 17th/18th century history

Aachen, Cologne, Ulm, Nuremberg and others - for medieval history

Same here. As odd as it may sound, the Spanish Civ Site is made in the USA

Thanks folks. Nemo, France for 22 years? Wow. I'm only 24 here, but I did spend a bit of time in France myself before college.
