welcome back to the OT, Mister Elias. have you been partaking of a certain herbal remedy? :waves hand in a mystical fasion: certainly such an idea of computers taking over is nothing more than the product of a paranoid imaginiation.

Computers just follow their instructions. Its the programmers you need to be worried about...

i hope i can jack myself in to computers, and download facts and information into my brain. And then, of course, try to get to know the lady in the red dress just a bit more ....

Its not so simple
since the 80s, its been know that things like genetic algorithm (which sort of progam themselves) can do things even if the programmer itself doesnt know how to.
And nowadayw you would be even more amazed what they can do.
Of course the initial programming is donne by a programmer, but you can write a program to write programs to write programs etc...

If intelligent computers take over, free from materialism, selfishness and greed, that will be a great day for everyone. That is why we need to become those computers - the cybernetic mind - no longer having dependency on the material but having much greater power of mind due to the merging of both spheres.

If used like this, I see the future of computers, and man, as glorious and intertwined.

exactly, one threat to ourselves being that we create an AI that destroys us

Death to DRM. Death to Microsoft. Death to AOL. Death to Ubisoft. Death to EA. Death to RIAA. Death to the MPAA.

According to the rest of your post, yes it is. If programmers don't program freaky things, computers can't commit freaky acts.

Yeah but the thing is that these methods are use for very non-freaky things.
To design robots and chess programs and many other examples I dont know.
Its like anything, its a tool, it can get out of hand.

I can tell you the future of my computer, and it is indeed horrifying. I'm gonna smash it a magnetic sledge hammer until I can't swing it anymore and then drag it behind my pickup until its disolves into nothing more than a streak of silicon, plastic, nuts and bolts on the highway.

That is of course if it doesn't blow up and catch on fire on its own first.

I am not so worried about computers getting smarter as the march of technology continues, but humans getting more and more ignorant.

I doubt THAT will happen. Humans are far less ignorant now than they were 100 years ago. They're no smarter, certainly, but less ignorant

Not that simple. Gordon's Law is just an empirical obversation, and it states that the density of ICs double every 18 months (not 6 months as you stated). This generally translates into an increase of CPU power, but the law is running up against some tough engineering problems now. If they can be solved, you will still be limited by physical laws (the real stuff).

I think that really comes out to a 300 some GHz processor in 10 years...but even that is highly unrealistic.
