Win98SE Mouse Flickering
Does anyone else have trouble with a flickering mouse in MOO2? It flickers whenever I move it, like it's skipping every 2nd frame. And just so you know, I'm running the Windows exe, not the DOS one. I didn't notice this last time I played with my old PIII800, so maybe it's my latest upgrade...

System Stats:
Athlon 2500+ XP
512MB RAM
nVidia ASUS GeForceFX 5200
Win98SE

As for drivers and such, I have:
Latest nVidia drivers (v45.23)
DirectX 9.0b, I think (v4.09.0000.0900)

Fingers crossed that someone knows how to fix this, I was looking forward to a bit of nostalgia

I have not noticed it. I played last night on my 98SE PC. I have not upgraded anything except direct x on that pc. It is 9.0b as well. The video is Geforce III, IIRC. It is a Pent 1.7GH with 512MB.
I normally do not use this machine much, only to play a few older games that XP is not very fond of.

Doh... Inspired by this, I tried re-installing. Several ways, actually...
1) Running from CD, v1.2
2) Running from HDD, v1.2
3) Running from HDD, v1.31

Still no luck But at least I know it's not an install issue.

Hmm, turns out I was using DX 9.0 or 9.0a. Upgraded to DX 9.0b with no luck. Also tried the latest nVidia drivers (only came out a few weeks ago), again with no luck. Guess my MOO2 days are over.

Try setting the desktop to 800 and 16 bit and see what happens.

Thanks for the idea, but it's still not working...

Though your idea got me thinking, and I just realized: why not try the DOS exe? I've never run it before, but it turns out that it works just fine! The animation is a bit slow but hey, at least I can play MOO2 again

So once again, thanks for the feedback vmxa1.

Late reply, I know. I didn't notice the thread until now, though. Unfortunately I don't have a solution, just more info about the problem.

This happens for me on my computer: an Athlon XP, running Windows XP, with a GeForce 3 video card. I notice that when I install Windows XP from CD, the initial drivers Windows provides don't have the problem (but are noticably slower in new, 3d-intensive games). It's only when I install NVIDIA or OEM drivers that the mouse flicker comes up.

Same as Zarakost, different versions of the driver, or DirectX don't fix the problem. Also, if I uninstall the NVIDIA drivers (from Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs) the mouse flicker remains.

Setting "Compatibility Mode" on the program doesn't help either.

I had the same problem yesterday after I had to reinstall WinXP. Then I remembered that I used another version of the nvidia drivers (40.52) when the problem occured so I went back to 29.42 et voilà, problem is gone.
