So for you guys who download music a lot, what are the best sites to do so??

If there are sites where I can LEGALLY download music for free, what are they?

If not, what sites offer the best deals for downloading music?

Free music is available legally.

Some bands will offer free downloads of some of their songs. Do a search for them. Also, there are many places that offer music that is in the public domain.

If you are looking for the latest hit song though you'll have to pay to stay legit, you consumerist running dog lackey.

Ming: would it be appropriate or not to suggest the name of a p2p program? I've found a damn good new one, but I won't post it's name unless it's cool for me to do so.

If it's LEGAL... OK... Not legal... not OK.
The owners of this site do not support or condone the illegal use of software or theft. It's really pretty simple

Ming...the scripkiddies here want to discuss Kazaa. Discussing the legal sites would be like discussing the porn films that Tracy lords made after she was of age.

If you live in Canada, it's all legal as long as you don't upload copyrighted files.

It would probably be permisable to mention its name and features to certain interested parties via PM.

A very tough cookie as of late. Downloading, using and distributing a p2p program is legal, to the best of my knowledge. It can only get illegal when you download content that is either illegal by itself (like child porn in most places), or that has been acquired and put for share illegally (ripped music, copied softwar, etc).

mp3.com does let you download quite a few legal MP3s, from independent artists or from copyright-free music (such as classical music).

I you're into MIDI, you can find tons of midis frre to download as well. I suppose it is legal, because most mainstream hosts have a few homepages devoted to MIDI downloading.

Well, I don't have an MP3 -- I thought someone would know of a good site for me to download music, with which I could create my own customized music CDs, since I have a R/W drive.

You can burn MP3s into custom music CDs listenable in car or living-room HiFi. The quality is less good than pure CD tracks, but it's barely noticeable for the casual listener (however, it's very noticeable for the trained listener)

It's sure legal here...we're not in Greece and DanQ is from Canada so why do USian laws matter?

I think there are some russian sites that are legal (in Russia only) with good selection.

Freenet as far as I know is legal except for the fact that it sucks. It has virtually no (accessible) content.

There is a Korean service which may or may not be legal (under whose laws?).

While it may be considered legal in some countries... it is not OK to discuss it here. The owners make the rules on this privately owned site. And they consider it theft, and not appropriate for discussion here.

mp3.com was bought by a media company called Vivendi. They have closed it off for remaking, and refused to let anyone make an archive copy of the content inside, Vivendi did make a remark about wiping it clean IIRC. In that case only the copies of the people who made and downloaded the songs remain. Vivendi is setting up a new similar service at this site, and will probably use the juicy domain mp3.com for their own pay-for-download service or somesuch.

On this BBS we operate under the laws of Mingapulco, a feudal state within the Poly monarchy.
