AH, it isn't as easy as just 'upping and leaving', what about accommodation and food you know? I just can't rely on the offchance of 'getting a job' just like that - it has never worked in the past. It's all so fatiguing. I just want a half decent job...why is this proving so elusive?

Yeah, but are you aware of how hard it is to emigrate to your country with all the green card system, and the expense of doing so...

Like I'm not already - I got a job rejection last week but you don't see me creating threads about it. Suck it up and move on.

As you've probably noticed, it is more complicated than just plain old job rejections. It is about having the rug swept from beneath your feet.

PH, although PA is being an insensitive Cheney as usual I think he has a bit of a point. Seems like you are still a bit depressed and this is making things look shitter than they are.

I just don't see anything other, no matter how I try to look. It still feels like the walls are closing in around me. No matter what I apply for they will always take on another person, even if I am the more experienced or confident, which happened last time. And even if I get the job, that bad experience with Novartis has left me very nervous about the whole thing.

One of the classic symptoms of depression is whenever someone comes up with any solution the depressed person can always tell you why it won't work.

Are you doing any exercise? Nothing like a long walk or jog or bike ride to break you out of your funk.

It's not always that easy but I agree that it is a classic symptom. All bad things are amplified and all good things dismissed.

Well I think he probably needs to see a doctor.

Mind you, if I was still living with my Mum at his age I'd be depressed too.

Well I am not moving out unless I have some kind of security. It seems to be something a lot of people take for granted. But if I lose my job (bear in mind I am only a temp), I will be shafted - I'll be shafted anyway if I lose it, financially speaking. But I am just waiting for that break. The killer is, I thought I'd had it and then it all went wrong. It's the whole dangling carrot thing over and over. All I want is an even break, a permanent position with enough money to pay my way - I am not that extravagant so it needn't be even that much - I don't think I am asking too much considering my experience, my education and my conscientious, hard-working disposition. I'm not asking for a lottery win, a supermodel wife or a mansion in the country. Just a permanent job so I can have self-sufficiency and an ounce of self-respect. Is this like I am asking for a miracle? No!

There's no such thing in today's world. Even if you sign a contract, so what? You still can be fired.

If you are asking at all then yes, you are asking too much. If you must expect something in life expect to get shafted, then you will usually be pleasantly surprised when it goes right.

If you aren't prepared to take a chance then nothing will happen. If you aren't prepared to put up with an undesirable situation as a step towards something better then you are unlikely to get to the something better stage. [/end lecture]

What do you expect? Sympathy?

I'm offering advice, whereas you are just telling him he's depressed. At least I'm suggesting a way out.

When I say throw some weights around, it's good to take pent up energy and frustration out on something like a few 5kg plates. Don't know what you think I was implying. It totally relaxes me and has the added bonuses of increased testosterone levels, increased respect from others for your physique, and (even) more attention from the women.

Swimming would be a good start, if he's insecure about his body.

When was the last time you had some mackerel Rich? Maybe you are a bit short of some good fats in your diet - they play an important part in regulating mood.

I know what you mean but you obviously haven't been depressed (which is great! hope you never are). There is a certain level where "snap out of it" and "exercise and eat better" don't cut it. Although they can certainly help with a recovery. Alongside that one of the problems is that if you are depressed it is very hard to help yourself like that because you get to a point where you can't see anyway that anything can ever improve. To a non depressed person that is obviously flawed logic but it's not that easy to get out of it and it's a horrible situation to be in.

Logically most of the things people have been trying to say to help PH are sensible and helpful but if you are depressed it's very easy to dismiss logical suggestions. *shrug* The answer is probably to get some counselling. Need to tackle the depression before the other things, which is hard, but once that's done the other things will become a lot easier.
