Considering buying Civ 3
I don’t currently own a copy of Civ 3, but I am borrowing it from a friend to see if I want to purchase it myself. I saw C3C being advertised, and wondered if it was that much better than Civ 3. That said, will C3C work on its own, or will I need to purchase Civ 3 first?

You need to have Civ3 installed for C3C to work. It is an expansion not the game itself. C3C does however contain the previous expansion (Play the World) so you do not need that.

I see. I have owned games before in which the expansions were stand-alone ones, and didn’t require the purchase of the original game in order to run. Crackers, that’s a pretty pricey purchase to get both games. Is C3C really worth it?

I personally enjoy the game (as long as it's patched) so yes I think it's worth it.

There are many interface improvement in the expansion packs. The editor in CivIII is much weaker than C3C.
Many more civs and units in C3C.
You are allowed up to 31 civs in C3C as to 16 in CivIII.
It can be found for as low at $9.99, so that is about as fair a price as you can expect.

Yes a few games do have stand alone expansion packs such Disciples II, the Warlords III and others.
Disciples for example was not cheap and did not offer all that much for the price of not requiring the original. Mind you it was worth the money to me, but just a point of fact.

Thank you for they quick reply.

That is what I figured, but asking before buying seemed like a better idea. I'd really feel silly if I bought it and they weren't compatible.

Go buy it. You won't regret. Well, maybe later, when you find out that your social life went down the drain...

Well, I went out and purchased the two games at the beginning of this past weekend. It was a long weekend, which was handy. You guys were right, the Conquerors expansion is superb. I’m just loving the conquests and the variety of play they bring. Goodbye social life.

Is that one an on-line multiplayer patch only, or does it patch other aspects of the game?

It fixes several bugs in the original game. You definitely need it, even for SP.

Two huge issue:

1- gold per turn bug

Where any gpt deals get paid twice

2- FP corruption

where the FP was of little use before patching and now is decent and worth having.

So with C3C you can still play online with other people... even if you dont have PTW?

Man, the guy asks a bunch of civ nuts whether he should buy civ. Hardly an impartial audience.

True, however I had seen bad reviews for the PTW expansion, and wanted to get the opinion of people who have similar tastes in games to myself, before purchasing the C3C expansion.
