Looks like Gear and GTA are not all that far apart and have less than CivIII.

Ok I got that wrong, it is GTA. They had 4191 in their run. CivIII got 4400 in its run.

Should be close. March 23rd.

Let's use tactics for the next round. This is the current situation :

1. We could beat GTA by at least 200 (assuming there is no traitor), so we could go to the next round on March 30 fighting against Arcade Champion
2. The current status Tetris could beat Super Mario. Here is the tactic:
In addition for voting CivIII on March 30, we should vote for Super Mario On March 23, because it would be an easier enemy to fight. It's legal, but not fair

Do you want to see a rare thing? OK, here it is.

I apologise for misinterpreting your first post. I was not the only one, but I was the one to say something caustic about it and the next one. There you have it. No offence meant, and I apologise for finding some.

What!!

How on earth can anyone say Civ3 is better than GTA 3? I somehow suspect that the 10+ million units of GTA 3 sold (and 11.5 million for Vice City) reveal a different general opinion. I must respectfully go along with the majority-at-large and vote against Civ on this matter.

I am not sure what sales has to do with it. Really I do not see why they are in against each other. They should stay with in the same genre.

Lots of GTA players will not be play any TBS games. As to better, I fail to see how any one could play a game like GTA more than once. It is like potty jokes, not funny the second time around.

vmxa1,

I've played both, and while Civ has lasting appeal greater than GTA, the first time you play a GTA game right until you get 100% is just the most amazing gaming experience ever.

vmxa1's made a lot of very pertinent points, and this is one. First, liberty city is a nonsence genre and we should not be competing against car racing (I assume that's what it is). It appears that they pasted two half-competitions together several times... If there was a full strategy game "region" in the poll, then it would have been Civ2 vs. Civ3 in the final!

Second, sales mean nothing when comparing games on different platforms. In particular, on games machines, you had to buy the games, which have a much shorter game-life as they need to sell more a few months later, and they are much more mainstream. Many, let's say, part-time/amateur gamers -- those that buy a game and play it for a few hours at Christmas -- would be using these platforms. As for sales, for example, my little brother bought/got as presents all the early machines, 3 PS's, 2 PS2's, (yes multiple machines for different region's games!), a N64, GameCube, Xbox, etc, etc... he got many, many games, but I never saw him playing the same one a month later.

PC games, especially ones with a long life are slowly disceminated amoung the population - Civ was not an instant success, but I know few gamers that never played it. And in those days everyone copied games (well, I was at school and had no money!) We are talking about a game that has been developing since, and has kept people addicted the entire time!

As for the best game of all time, I don't think there would be many people on this site who would trade a short thrill of well-rendered graphics and the excitment of doing some new gameplay for the first time with years of the continuing pleasure of playing the challenging and interesting game that is Civilization.

Civ3 has a decent chance of taking down the Arcade champion (presuming it beats GTA), but the writing's on the wall - we'll get splattered by Doom in the semi-finals. Still, for a TBS game to get that far in this competition will speak volumes!

I do not doubt it is fun. Many things are interesting at first. It just does not strike me as something I would want to play over and over.

But anyway, my point is TBS should not go up against RTS/FPS/RPG and other genre. It will not win very often.

Many more players in the other games, than TBS.

The one advantage we have is that we are committed fans who take personal pride in voting for Civ, whereas most mass-marketed games will not have everyone following this poll to vote! We have been steadily improving our vote more than the other games. If we get to vote-off against something as popular as Doom was, imagine our pride... and their shock!
