What is that white Plinth that appears at your starting point in some games?
Can someone tell me what the significance of it is? It's a white plinth or obelisk which appears at your starting point in some games. I don't know what it is. Do I need to defend it?

I think it's used in the treasure conquests when you need to return various items to a specific place for victory points.

The obelisk are called Victory Point Locations . You must have a military unit occupy the square to accure points.

You rack up points quicker the more you have (like duh). That scenario or game should have a VP level that triggers victory. If you have captured all of them, you should probably already have won or will be very close to it.

Some games require a fairly lare number of points. You get points every turn that you own the VP. so the sooner you park a unit the more points you will aquire.
I have not played them, so I do not know if owning them all is enough or not. I would think it should not be long after you get them all though.
I think some maps have other factors to add to the scores.

It is good to note that building a city on Victory Point locations does not qualify -- you need the combat unit there.

Ah, thanks for straightening that out. I haven't played too many of the Conquests so I wasn't sure.

That is correct, you get nothing by building on the location. It must be defended by troops.

Does it have to be in your territory? Or can you collect points by occupying a VP location in enemy territory?

Yup, in Fall of Rome as the Huns, I stationed my troops on several VP locations without building cities there.
You generally get more points capturing cities, but the cities without them are one time points, while these VPs score points every turn you have a military unit present. They are also generally spread out such that the only way to get the majority of VP locations is to capture (or at least raize) a lot of cities.
