Problem with Photoshop
I know it is not exactly a specific Civ II problem, but as I exclusively use Photoshop (version6) to modify units, terrains, etc for Civ II, I thought that here was the best place to ask the question!

So here is what happened: the program worked fine until last Monday, where it suddenly refused to save the current (bmp) file!

I got a message that sounded like: "Couldn't execute your request due to program error"

I restarted the computer, relaunched the program, and retried: I still couldn't save (with "save" and "save as") the picture (though I could modify it and do everything, except save my work!)

So I tried it with different formats (gif, jpeg, bmp) and it was still the same!

So I decided to reinstall Photoshop, which I did yesterday (twice!): still no change!!

What can I do??

Buy a mac and use the mac version Jokes apart I suspect it's a problem of program preferences (i.e. registry). If the problem persist after the reinstalling the bug must reside into the operating system, so I guess it's a matter of registry of some corrupted dll file.

As a work around, perhaps you could copy to the paste buffer and then paste into another program such as microsoft photoeditor or paint. That might at least enable you to save your images.

The problem seems to be much worse than expected: I can't save an existing file with ANY program: Excel, ...

So, I'll probably end up formatting the f***ing computer again (3rd time this year...)

Did you install any (dogy) programs recently? Some program may have overwritten some Windows DLL with its own version, and broke the save function in the process.

You might be able to fix that by uninstalling that program. Otherwise, Windows has a program called sfc (system file checker, you should be able to launch by typing "sfc" in the Run option on the start menu). It can find changed system files, and restore them from your Windows CD...

If there are a lot of files that have been changed, this might become an impossible task, though. Especially since you don't know what files cause the problem. If you have Windows XP you can type in "sfc /scannow" instead. That'll automate the process... I think...

No, I haven't been installing any program since the last time Photoshop worked properly!
But I suspect that somee dll(s) got erased or corrupted (but how??)

Anyway, I got fed up and used the "overkill" solution: "format C:"

So it now seems to work (still need to check a few things, though...)

I had never heard of "sfc", but it'll probably prove helpful should the problem reappear!

So thanks!

And no, I have Win 98 (old PC...)

(I still have Win98 too)

SFC is a bit of a pain really, but its very useful if you know which file is causing the problem.
