Best Computer game of all time?
I am going to go with SMAC over Civ2, because altough civ2 has better scenarios, the actual "game" is better in SMAC.

Half-Life (with mods). Soon it may be replaced by System Shock 2.

I think there was a contest one time on gamecenter and the winner there was civ1!

My bet goes for:
Diablo or Transport Tycoon (both which I still play, not that often, but still sometimes).

If measured by amount of players, Doom beats everything else, with about 20 million players. But...

Best Corridor Shooter: Doom
Best Simulation: SimCity 3000
Best RTS: Age of Empires
Best TBS: Civilization II

Damn! My thread got zapped to where probably 1/4 of the amount of people will read it.

Ata: Civ1 better than Civ2!? They must have been drunk or something, as civ2 was 10 times as better!

I really miss Load Runner, the original version for Apple ][. Not that I have a computer I could play it on if I had a copy…

Not the best ever, but it was so different at the time from the arcade style games and text adventures, plus it was customizable.

I believe Civilization 1&2, Master of Magic and Orion 1&2 and Star Control 2 are the best computer games of all time.

Showing my age - M.U.L.E.

It was the coolest multiplayer game you could play with only one computer.

rpg:
from what i've played of it on zsnes (emulator) i'd have to say the english translation of Final Fantasy 4. (thats ignoring graphics of course)
1st player:
definitely half-life, awsome storyline with wierdo aliens.
real-time strategy:
starcraft-brood war, i played the multiplayer 3-8 hrs. a day for 5 months!! never skipping a day on b-net ('cept for vacations)
racer:
jet moto 2, such a cool concept with a moderate graphics increase over the original.

thats 'bout it...

Best game of all time huh? Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Shut up. Yeah you! No! Don't use that! Help! AG!

Best game of all time.

And Age of Empires sucks. Starcraft is better in every way. And Age of Empires ripped everything off of warcraft 2.

Best computer game of all time? Hmm...

Civ 2, of course. Followed by Alpha Centauri, very close.

But I cannot forget some wonderful games as well: SimCity 3000 (yeah, I think 3000 is better than 2000), FIFA 99 (I'm a soccer fan...), Pirates! (best mix of adventure and strategy of all time), and Ultima VII (wow! best RPG I've ever played!).

The thing is that by posting a question like "what is the best game of all time?" in a specific game genre's (turn based strategy games) board, you are going to get the same anwers from mostly everyone. If you want a veriety, go to a forum in a site that is devoted to games in general.

And for the guy who said "Final Fantasy 7":
NO. FINAL FANTASY SEVEN IS THE WOSE RPG I HAVE EVER PLAYED. IT SUCKS. IT IS STUPID AND POINTLESS AND THE PLOT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. THE FIRST HALF AN HOUR ARE. "You were in Soldier, now you are in something, we don't trust you." "Do you remember the promise you made 5 years ago?" flashback (in high squeaky girl anime voice) "will you always love me, guy with idiotically big sword?" And there are those guys named luke and wedge and biggs for no @#$@# reason.

And Starcraft beats any real time strategy game hand down. ESPECIALLY rip off ones like Age of Empires. Age of Empires is an exact copy of Warcraft 2. They stole absolutely everything. EVERYTHING. And Warcraft 2 remains better.

Colonization, Pirates, Civ II
I really dig Sid Meier games, though they tend to have too much restrictions if you playtested them fully...
Col has a too little city screen and too few units, too less diplomacy
Pir has too few cities (and I still wait for Pirates Platinum to change more than graphics!!) and no settle-options (you need bases... and where you meet 300 men in one tavern ?), and the mediterranean theatre misses
Civ II is often too far away from realism

but in gameplay and fun they still rule over all those graphics-loaden dummy games

most exact economy game: A-Train
most fun economy game: RR Tycoon
most sucking eco game: Transport Tycoon ( yeah, you built all, now you canīt beat your opponents or buy em... whatīs the sense ?...
and why do you never get to the end bcuz the game slows down that dramatically)
best Strategy games: SSIīs Pacific War, Second Front and Panzer General
most fun strategy game: Col and Civ (+Centurio)
worst strategy game: Battle of the Bulge on C-64
best 3-d Shooter: REDNECK RAMPAGE, Doom 1 + 2, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem
worst : Unreal !!! (no story though they tried, lots of silly jumping and dodging monsters, itīs more like a graphics engine)

Civ2, of course! CTP and SMAC tie in a close second. Some other great games are Fifa99, SimCity 3000, Commandos, Starcraft, Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, Blade Runner, Dark Forces (prequel of Jedi Knight) and Tyrian.

I still say Final Fantasy 7. I've played it through twice, so obviously IMO it isn't the 'WOSE' RPG ever.

RPG: Never played 'em.

RTS: Age of Empires, hands down. StarCraft was just WarCraft II in space with crappy graphics.

Shooter: Jedi Knight or Duke Nukem 3D, take your pick. I found Doom and Quake to be very boring, they had neither a story nor a personality. I've never tried Halflife/SiN due to system reqs.

TBS: CivII is the one and the only. Imperialism II would be up there as well if they included a scenario editor.:-)

Business: SimCity 2000/Transport Tycoon Deluxe rock.

wtf??? starcraft is exactly like warcraft???

what about the 3 completely seperate races??
or their idividual story lines??
not to mention the new spells and graphics!!
also what about new add-ons like water starcraft?
please, you can say that aoe was better, but don't say that blizzard did nothing with the complaints from warcraft 1 and 2.

Well, the Terran race in starcraft is just like the races in Warcaft. But, there is more than just the Terran. And a lot is like Warcraft (spells, etc.). What do you mean by the water add-on?
