Kingchat: what are your preferences?
I'm interested to know how people manage this. Personally I don't like a lot of chat. I hate potty talk.

Since I play games with friends I know well or diplogames, King Chat is integral, and vital to keeping me intrested while others move.

King Chat can make a great contribution to the game. Providing it's either interesting, amusing or informative. Mindless crudity and pointless blather is what forces me to drop KC into the background. And people who KC when they're supposed to be taking their turn give me the irrits.

I really enjoy kingchat as long as AH and finbar can refrain from all the potty talk they seem to enjoy.

Lowang likes to chat when he should be having his turn ,that can get annoying.

Since I tend to play either games PURELY for the purposes of playing the game rathing than actually winning (ie my games with Chris and Joe) we tend to talk during our turns, but I don't think either side sees this as a negative aspect because its for specific reasons. Or I play a game for the purpose of Diplomacy, as in a Diplogame, and chatting is necessary, in some cases if you can't get the message out expediantly, its important to use your turn in order to get the message to the person you need to send it to.

So I think its always a plus.

I am indebted to finbar for showing me how to put KC in the background. Its a very useful tool but very annoying if abused. For personal chat I tend to use icq.

Notice how you only have to drop KC into the background when a certain two or three of our chaps come together in a game?

A game without communication? Might as well play against the ai if you're playing with a bunch of mute drones.

Communication in multiplayer is an essential part of the game and should be used extensively when appropriate (bartering, disputing, arguing, bragging, storytelling, etc.).

It's the interaction that makes civ fun.

I do think off-game talk should be kept to an absolute minimum in KC however.

Who was it among us who likened the Aussie games to a poker night? Hardly sounds like this is the case here.... Sounds like an old womans club to me

When people address me in KC I seem compelled to answer. Get a helmet.

Carolus - if you click outside the kingchat window, on your main map window, the two windows will swap positions and you'll have kingchat open but in the background. Now you can play your game in peace, without having to click away the kingchat window each time it pops up.

Yes, that's right. Ask him, he won't dispute it. I'm not sure why keeps coming up with these different names; maybe he forgets his password?

The only problem with putting King Chat in the background is that is is easy to forget that you have done so. Then legitimate questions get overlooked and people think you are being an ass. It's a good way to lose an ally, too.
