GAME ON! May Madness Pairings Now Available.
M A Y M A D N E S S ! !

The moment you've been waiting for will be here very soon! Your game, in the form of a multiplayer scenario file, will be prepared and in your Inbox by 12mid PDT Friday 4/30/99.

In the mean-time, to whet your appetites, here are the eight pairings for May Madness. When you have arranged your first playing time, please let me know. I'd like to keep tabs on how things unfold.

It would be helpful if you could post your status here as well. It would really reduce the burden on me to keep all 16 of you informed of the status of the other's matches.

As I'd like to add some narrative to the tournament, please e-mail ( tfs99@sirius.com ) a copy of your .SAV file after each session. The narrative will take place in another Apolyton MP thread titled "May Madness News Network (M2N2):

apolyton.net/forums/Forum27/HTML/000004.html

The 16 Garland Cup Competitors are ...

Eggheads take on the Fanatics:

Pawnie (University) mnovet@worldcom.ch vs. cous Lee (Believers) couslee62@yahoo.com

Tree Huggers take on the Survivalist Wackos (twice!):

HeavyPressure (Gaia) ledfoot@dsl-only.net vs. Phil_E (Sparta) holman@cygnus.uwa.edu.au

Nell (Gaia) Nell_Smith@msn.com vs. korn469 (Sparta) korn469@mindless.com

Tree Huggers take on the Insects:

Lord Rong (Gaia) rong@bigfoot.com vs. CaptComal (Hive) captcomal@hotmail.com

And the Bureaucrats take on the World!:

Thingol (Peacekeepers) jgooby@vanstar.com vs. Bolbol (University) bolbolafandy@yahoo.com

Rasputine (Peacekeepers) rdc01698@mail.telepac.pt vs. micje (Sparta) michiel.demare@student.uva.nl

Lord Biggun (Peacekeepers) biggun1979@communityconnect.com vs. Sphinx (Hive) sphinx_1981@hotmail.com

Gyromancer (Peacekeepers) morristm@quasar.phys.vt.edu vs. Rhys006 (Gaia) rhys006@hotmail.com

After considering all of the input, I have decided to stick with Bell Curve: ON and Blind Research: OFF. The first round map will be Standard size. If this presents a problem due to connection speed for too many contestants, I would consider starting over with a smaller map.

For reference here is a link to the old May Madness thread:

Ok, I've registered with my bigfoot address. I'll be covering my ass for now, if you know what I mean.

I've sent an email to CaptComal. Looks like we are going to meet on Planet pretty soon.

Thanks MarkG for opening up the ban list. You may want to leave it like that.

Well, I made the self-imposed deadline by ten minutes. That Scenario Editor can be a tad frustrating at times.

Anyway, GAME ON! Everyone should have their file and if you need any help loading the file just e-mail me or look for me on ICQ (#32105618).

Good luck and have fun. You are making history. The first SMAC Tournament on Planet Earth!

Hmm, am I the only one that didn't receive the game file? My email is usually pretty stable.

Did anyone start their tournament game yet?

We have not started ours yet (I work 10-12 hours each day on Sat & Sun).

The curious need to know.

>>>>> CaptComal

I have e-mail reports from two pairs that they have begun playing: Nell -- korn469 and Rasputine -- micje, each of them has gotten 30 turns or so in.

I also have heard from Phil_E and HeavyPressure. Their report implied that they may be playing today (Sunday).

And who knows, others may be too busy playing to report!

I'm very glad that we finally have this baby off the ground and that unrelentless progress has been satisfactorily unleashed. As much as I'd like, I can't really say the same about my game; still waiting 4 my opponent 2 respond.

By the way, I just thought I'd mention this again: MY MOST HUMBLE AND SINCERE APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE 2 THE MAN WHO HELPED MAKE ALL THIS POSSIBLE: TED, U ROCK, DUDE!! Hehe Keep up the excellent work, man. I'll keep u posted on how it develops on this side of the Network Node.

yes, after wielding the AIs like a Gideon, and a brief taste of supremacy, the game has begun to take interesting paths. Dear Miriam has tasted the fungus, and despite that she can no longer blink, will relentlessly persue the honored position of.........cup holder.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

Your "knowledge" is nothing more than blasephmous garbage! The good lord has appointed Miriam to instruct the followers to take out the trash.

Here Here! I second the motion made by Bolbol in appreciation of TFS99 (also known as Ted). It was LOTS of work ... and still more work to come and he is not even in the tournament!

Question: how do we set our passwords? Clicking on the padlock icon did not work for us.

Our game (CaptComal/Hive vs Rong/Gaian) has progressed 46 turns and we hope to continue it tonight.

Pawnie (me) and cousLee played in two days 68 turns of this awesome game and all went fine and lagless until now as far as I'm concerned (aside from the starting tech glitch ;o) ).
Nevertheless one question arose during combats resolution : I checked the 'Confirm probability before combat' option in my preferences but it didn't work. Units just jumped headless into mêlée ! Now I'm not an experienced SMAC player yet and it would be reassuring for me to know exactly my odds before I throw my valiant soldiers into action. Maybe this option was disabled on purpose for MP games ?! (it only takes a couple of seconds looking at your winning/losing chances ..)

I have the same option checked, and since it did not work for me either, I assumed the host (pawnie) did not have it checked and that the host computer determines the "in-game" setting.

our game may not be the best example though, since we are v2.0 at this point.

Pawnie, I read a post from J Morris that the freanch v3.0 has been "signed off" (meaning it should be available within the next few days).

Hey, everyone. Hope everything is going 2 everyone's satisfaction. John (Thingol) and I started playing last night on 2 have my computer crash (while I'm hosting!!) by the 7th turn and only 2 realize that I didn't get a chance 2 save. We'r gonna have another go at it tomorrow. There were a few things, though:
1. Ted: the game doesn't ask u 4 a password when u load it in a MP game but it does if u "LOAD" the game from the main menu...?
2. It seems that I (as a host) wasn't able 2 change time controls during play. What's up with that, guys? Anyone experiencing this?

coueLee, I am hosting the game with CaptComal, I had the option checked also but it didn't work for us either. We are at v3.0.

So I guess it's probably determined by the save file.

>>>>>> Bolbol

My experience has been that you set passwords on the initial MP launching screen. You do this by clicking on the little padlocks. Has always worked for me, but some are reporting that it does not work.

If you load an MP .SAV file from the MP menu and not the "launch screen" it assumes that you are going to play Hot Seat/PBEM and it asks you for the password of the next faction to play.

>>>>>> About the Combat Odds Option

It seems that some preferences can be changed and others can't, I also have found in my PBEM games that I wanted to see the occasional odds, but could not turn it on once the game started.

I have no experience with an MP game where the option was selected to be on from the first. Perhaps, it is just a "feature" that it does not work. There are a lot of "features" (disabled functionality) like that in MP play.

SMAC V. 3 French is finally out !
After installing it we decided to try it out and carry on our match on this new version. I loaded the last saved game (played on v.2) and it worked ! Not for long though ... First couLee reported he had no music any more, then he couldn't disband a (captured !) city (it seems there is an option by building a colony pod, if I got it right) and, after some turns I noticed that a (Spartan) unit 90% damaged just fully repaired overnight (in one turn) on the battle field .... At this point we agreed to go back to v.2 (
Hope it will be useful in the next round though .. hehe
