Robby Boy, do you mean me? Sorry about the last turn, I'd been doing some alpha.txt mods to find out what the 'nutrient cost modifier' was, and I forgot to swap back to the original alpha.txt. Since it means the number of columns in the nutrient box and I'd changed it to 1000 I had rather a lot of time before the next population growth!
I had to load the turn up again with the correct alpha.txt, since the game crashed on saving. I played the turn precisely the same way. Although I did in a sense pop a pod twice, I got the same thing both times (nutrient resource ), so I don't think it makes a difference.

Um, this is perhaps the wrong time to ask, but does anyone remember the settings that were used for this game? In particular, is it on do-or die, coop victory, etc. It just occured to me that possibly I was perhaps making unwarranted assumptions. Thanks!
