And yes, I have the latest 3DFX drivers for my PCI 3DFX 3000 card. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

CTP2 caused an invalid page fault in

D'oh. I'm very sad to hear that. I promise if we'd seen any crashes like that in our compatibility lab, it wouldn't have shipped, but of course PCs have an incredible variety of hardware that makes it nearly impossible to try every configuration.

That said, there's a couple of things you can try: First copy \ctp2_data\default\gamedata\profile.txt to \ctp2_program\ctp\userprofile.txt, then in the newly copied userprofile.txt try these things:

a) Change TryWindowsResoultion to No. (It already says no if you opted for the minimum system install). Try running now.

b) If that doesn't work, leave that one as No, and change the ScreenResWidth and ScreenResHeight lines to 800 and 600, respectively, to select the minimum resolution.

c) If that still doesn't work, change your windows desktop to 16-bit color, go to /ctp2_program/ctp, right click ctp2.exe, then create shortcut. Right click the new shortcut, and in the target field, go to the end of the line and add, all one word separated by a space from ctp2.exe, "nonexclusive". This will cause the game to share video memory with your windows desktop, which will cause strange visual effects if you alt-tab out, or otherwise switch to another window, but it may solve your problem.

d) Verify that the movies play: Outside the game, go to /ctp2_data/default/videos and double click any AVI in there. If DXMedia and Indeo5 are installed (both should be installed by Windows for Win98+, but not Win95. In the latter case, CTP2 should have installed them for you. You didn't mention what OS you're using). If those don't play, reinstall the game and have it install DXMedia for you, or install Windows Media Player from Microsoft's site. Not having it shouldn't cause a crash however, it should only cause no movies, or movies with only sound but no video, so I don't think this will be it. I'm just suggesting it since the first thing you would see normally would be the intro movie.

e) If all that fails, there should also be a file named crash.txt generated in /ctp2_program/ctp when the game crashes. Please email me that file. Also go to Start Menu->Run and type "dxdiag" without the quotes and press enter, click Save All Information, and send me that file too, and I should be able to get a better idea of what's wrong. If you don't see a file named crash.txt, add the line "EnableLogs=Yes" to userprofile.txt and try again.

Again, I'm really sorry it failed to work for you, we didn't see any crashes like that here, nor do I remember hearing of any from CTP1. If any of those suggestions work, let me know so I can tell our customer support people. If not, and you send me the two files from step e, and I can see what's wrong and fix it, I'll get you a fixed version to verify it.

Tried all suggestions and game still crashes. The AVI's play jsut fine, though, with both video and sound. Emailed Mr. Ogre my crash.txt file and results from dxdiag.

Thanks for any suggestion you may have.

PS The videos just whetted my appetite to play this game!!!

Try hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL and then closing everything buy Systray and Explorer. This is the bare minimum that the game needs. Sometimes, you'll see that things which are running are causing the problems. Also, are you using a DVD player? If so, are the drivers on that new? Finally, if you have WinDVD....Delete it and try...

Just some suggestions

Well, I decided to just give up trying to fix my system and just reformatted the drive and reinstall everything and NOW CTP2 works just fine. I'm sure it was my system and not the game.

By the way, Mr. Ogre from Activision is a GREAT support person. I told him last night that I would probably just format my drive and reinstall everything and he STILL was looking into my problem today and emailed me tonight with even MORE suggestions! Thanks a LOT for that!

Looking forward to finally sinking my teeth into this game now.
