So DarthVeda,

I never bought CTP2 so feel no personal bitterness affecting my buying decision. (anyway it's a sunk cost fallacy.)

Just based on the game (not the Activision angst), should I get it? I am a typical CIV2 deity, OCC and ICS player.

to clarify. Given a choice between playing Civ2 SP 2.4.2 or CTP2 (if both are already on your computer), which would you play?

Darth,

'Officially', I did not read your review...

'Unofficially' you were unbiased in your review and in your approach to the game - this is very encouraging to hear from someone who made a habit of trashing the pre-release. There is indeed hope in the world, and I give you a great deal of credit for trying the game.

I realize that a game really has to be run through a few times to detect some imbalances, so if you see something, bring it up. One of the things that I have seen here onsite is the capabilities of players to fix those imbalances, and it looks like those imbalances will be able to be addressed through the scenario builder. This is probably the most encouraging thing about CTP2. I do not have the time and ability to do my own mods, and I appreciate those who are able to do so.

I do have a concern about the worker changes implemented. I'm not sure how I am going to like it.
You mentioned the weakness in the tile improvements. This may be a potential flaw in the game, as a farm adds only to one tile. Since the workers work all the tiles in a city radius, this effect might become too diffused - one of the reasons for the lack of differences in city placement, based on terrain. I was concerned about this issue when it was brought up. I do not know how this can be adjusted - looking at cost for improvements may have to studied.

I realize that one of your main joys is creating scenarios. In the past, I have not been too interested in playing scenarios - I like starting from scratch. However, I know that I will be playing fan-released scenarios in the future now, and I hope that you are able to crank out some good ones.

Any more insight about the difficulty in creating these scenarios...

Anyhow, I just got the game today, so I will be trying it out this weekend. I do feel that the game is somewhat of a glorified patch, but I did enjoy CTP1 a lot (although only CD and Wes Modded, and PBEM), so I was looking forward to it.

And I didn't have to pay for it (indirectly though, since my wife gave it to me)

Happy birthday to Me!

Darth, baby, I've had a lot of vino this fine holliday weekend, so I'll keep it brief. After lurking and reading your posts reguarding CTP2 and your cynicsm (sp?) for activisions newist title, I found your review refreshing and honest. I am suprised and am glad you gave it the old college try. Did i mention the vino?

Darth, i really enjoyed your review of CTP2. My friends were all burned on CTP and it left a bad taste in their mouths as well. The fact that you state that CTP2 is really just CTP the way it should have been released, is something i hope companies like Activision and others take notice of. It sucked when you bought music cd's for 20$ cause one song was good and then found out the rest of the cd sucked. But its generally 2 1/2 -4 times that much for some games depending on what you buy and for all of us consumers out there its taking a big chance. Seeing as i wansn't burned by CTP because i didn't buy it, i think maybe i will now buy CTP2 and get the civ game i always wanted to replace civ2 or at least to play until civ3 comes out. I fear though that civ3 will be a civ 2 patch as well

Thanks for the review Darth.
My only complaint is that it wasn't more detailed.
But good job!
