Bombard Cities&Units
I can't bombard cities or units from the sea, neither with the ironclad nor with the ship of the line. Why?

Both the Ironclad and Ship of the Line units are able to Bombard Naval Units only. Therefore, when you try to bombard a city and you get the red circle with the line through it, this simply means that there are no naval units in the city.

Be careful, sometimes the computer will be building a naval unit, and it will come out and attack you before you can bombard.

I hope this helps.
Have fun.

Ah, another CtP1 veteran
This was changed in CtP2, Activision (rightly) thought that these units were too powerful for their time (though personally I would have simply made the ranged values lower instead of removing the bombard ability altogether).

can we change the txt file so that the ship of the line
would be able to bombard land?
to make it more realist, they should simply decrease the
hit point when ships are bombarding land.
(if terrian==land)
{
hitpoint-=5;
}
etc.

Yes, it's not CtP 1. There Ships of The Line were extremely powerful. Bombard sea, land, serve as a transport, and nice attack/defence factors. The first to get it on water had a big advantage for all the Renaissance Age.

Yes, I was very happy with the changes made to naval units in ctp2 from ctp1. The SotL inparticular was, as mentioned, insanely powerful in '1.

In '2, naval units are generally (always?) either transport OR military, but rarely (never?) both. This encourages mixed fleets, and makes escorting transports almost essential.

One disadvantage of this change is that it is not possible to attack a one-tile island city until the modern age (!) when Battleships (coastal bombard), Paratroupers and Marines (direct unload from transports into cities) become available. In ctp1, a one-tile island city could be easily flattened with SotL units.

The nice thing is that you can go into the units.txt file and add a bombard flag for any unit and also make make land units with amphibeous capabilities.

Amphibeous assault - see below

CanBeachAssault

Bombard - see below

CanBombard: Land
CanBombard: Mountain
CanBombard: Water

Counter Bombard - see below

CanCounterBombard
