The barbarians are my friends. (Well, sort of...)
I hate the Barbarians. But I must say, that other than forcing me to spend too much time on defense, and sometimes totally disrupting my plans, they have their better sides:

- They do the same to the AI tribes.
- they help show me where the other tribes' cities are, and what is defending those cities.
- they are sometimes terrific to bribe.
- they sometimes wipe out an AI tribe entirely at the beginning of the game.
- they sometimes seem to land, over and over, away from my cities and near the AI cities.

With all the benefits you listed how can you hate them?

Don't forget the ransom!

But for some reason, I always think that they hurt me more than they hurt the other civs. But the ransom is allright.
I do like smac's mindworms when I'm the gaians, they can be really useful. But that's another topic...

i love the barbarians....
they attack me occasionally, but they are too weak to threaten me, they do thrash some land, but i consider that easy to repair

but the great advantage for me is, that the barbarians capture an amount of enemy cities...so i can capture those barbarian cities without declaring war(wich i never do, unless they declare war on me of course...)

Here's another way to use barbarians (works real well in multimap).

(1) You find a hut very close to an opponent's city, on a different map (could be directly above). For example, you find a hut "nest" in the clouds, and the goblins have a city below it on the surface.

(2) Your unit opens the hut and get a whole bunch of tough barbarians, maybe six griffins.

(3) Your unit switches to another map and does its best to escape.

(4) Some of the barbarians also switch maps, and the nearby (goblin) city is TOAST.

I hate it when a barbarian stops and pillages my outlying city squares. Playing in OCC, I would much prefer he just gets on with the city attack and gets destroyed by whatever unit I have defending my city.

The Barbies can be your friends late in the game. Capture an isolated enemy city when you've discovered Communism, and then let the Barbarians capture it. You'll lose a bit of money but you gain a number of Partisan units who need no support.

I find them damn annoying most of the time. However, they're an easy way to get your units to vetern status, especially if you're not into wars.

But when they keep surrounding your number one producing city and destroying land improvements, they get quite annoying.

oh ya.I had the barbs kill my first 4 settlers once.Just kept popping up beside them when they got to the site. Finally sent a small army over to the area in question and found 4 huts.Warrior code in the hut that could be entered on first movement and,you guessed it,3 barb legions in the others which were on hills and forest. No more small army.I was finished in that game before it really got started.

Hi Smash.... well this sounds familliar, i was going berzerk.... have you noticed that in the early game tiping as many huts as possible is wiser as usually only one barb comes out..... as opposed to later when the hordes come out?? Once the first horde comes out i know that it will be much more frequent.... still as much as i hate barbs, those kings are worth the risk Had an Mp game the other day where i spent 500G by 2000bc and had 500G in reserves .... all from barb kings....... that was a sweet game too..... ah rivers and kings... gotta love it..... plus i got a none archer from a hut and my opponent wondererd how i figured out where he was..... he had no idea about the none unit thing.... after kicking his ass i told him about the little trick i lucked out there
