Europa Universalis is SHIPPING!
I know it's a bit late out the door but I just got notification from EBWORLD that my EU pre-order has SHIPPED!

Now the anticipation builds!

For reference, I did my pre-order on February 3rd.

I envy your excitement over this game. Recently I checked it out to see what all the hype was about, and to me it just seemed like an over-complicated board game. I'm weary of the Civ clone genre, although that won't be the case when Civ III ships!

I think much of the excitement is generated because it is definitely NOT a Civ clone. All of the big demands being made for Civ 3 are all part of the game:
- the rise and fall of nations
- the ability to have lots of NPC nationalities
- random events, disasters
- religion separate from government and not entirely under the dictat of the player
- rebellion leading to revolution and new countries forming
- war being socially and economically disruptive, leading to internal revolt and debt

To achieve this it sacrifices the random map and huge timescale of Civ. You get to play a part of history, not invent your own from scratch.

I'm planning on going to the local EB store tomorrow (I hope ), and buying the game.

Does anyone know of any other chains that are getting EU? CompUSA would be nice...

Just got off the phone with Fed-Ex. They said that due to weather some of their planes serving east coast areas didn't make their routes on time. I may get EU tomorrow, but just as likely, it won't be here 'til Monday!

Well, I've still got until mid March, or even early April until my dream game is shipping. I would almost sell a kidney to recieve it as early as Monday, so cheer up John-SJ!

It's still a lot of time though, it seems to be the game of my dreams, I have always loved the 16th-17th century.

GGGGRRRRR!!!!!!! FED-EX HAS LOST MY EUROPA UNIVERSALIS GAME!!! GGGGRRRRRR!!!!!!

Ok, I think I can continue without SHOUTING now. I just got off the phone with Fed-Ex, since it appears my package hasn't move from it's origination point since last Thursday they are putting a trace on it. I should know sometime today what happened/is happening with the shipment.

I think if they don't guarantee delivery by tomorrow I'll look for it in stores locally and just return my "pre-order" when it finally arrives.

WHEW! Glad that's over. The Fed-Ex trace revealed that my package was in a truck on it's way to my house. I called to let my wife know to expect them and the truck arrived while we were on the phone.

Now, I wonder what the chances are of developing a severe cough before lunch time?

John-SJ, I saw your reply right after mine at the EU forum. I'm glad you finally got it. Mine would've been shipped out on Thursday, but it didn't enter the queue until after they shut down due to the blizzard. That's why I don't pay for overnight delivery since it seems that more times than not, it gets out on Fridays and since I have everything delivered to my office, I can't get anything until Mondays anyways.

Alas! We've nothing but Babbage's and Best Buy in my hometown. Babbage's won't get EU until Feb, 28, but there is no word when it will make it to local retailers.

This game definitely does not suck! It is hard to get a handle on initially because the manual and tutorial are not perfect, but persevere. Play a fantasia game or Russian Grand Campaign to learn the ropes. Don't try England in the GC until you know what you are doing (my mistake)!!

Hmmmm. I wonder if it would be possible for someone to develop an expanded version of the game into a "Civilization Universalis"?

I got my hopes up and I am not disappointed. What it takes to like the game:

- an interest in strategy games
- a curiousity about history
- finding greater pleasure in strategy than tactics
- high historical fidelity but history that can be changed, sometimes dramatically
- enjoying subtleties like religious, geographic, economic, technology, weather, season, and a multitude of other factors that vary across some 70+ potential opponents
- finding that all this is still manageable with a few hours of game play under your belt
- customizability by editing some text files - you can play virtually any of the 70+ nations
- 128 mb of RAM for the later years when the game may slow if you are just meeting minimum specs

I have been a devoted civ-type game player for a decade and this game is simply the best game I have ever played, including Civ1, 2, and all the variants. It is not a game for you if you don't like to think and you are just looking for targets to shoot at.

I just bought the game yesterday. I rarely pay full price for a game - but I did for this one - and it's worth every penny. It is a beautiful game. Full of depth and strategy.

Run - do not walk to your game store to buy this game. All CivII, CTPII, and strategy gamers are going to love this game. It spans the whole freakin world! It has everything! Diplomacy, production, economics, military, etc. How did Paradox ever create such a game?

The manual (127 pages) is beautiful. It doesn't have an index, but someone created one, and it can be downloaded from the forum on Paradox's site. The pages in the manual are glossy pages; rivalling that of an expensive book.

This is a polished game that seethes with history and gameplay. I am going to be playing this for a long time.

More scenarios are being created for it all the time, and can be found at the following site:

http://www.europa-universalis.com/

Here is a game worthy of your attention until CivIII comes along. Even then, you are going to still be playing it.

Hm, curious. PC Gamer gave it 54%, and they're never wrong... No, wait, there was that time they gave CtP 96%.

Still I think I'll trust they're 94% on Black and White.
