I finally won a occ!!!
Taking Smash's advice to heart, I built a 15-1-1-1-1-1 on tonights OCC game and I MADE IT!!

This is the FIRST time that the AI hasn't whacked me during the OCC game! The big difference, I think, is that I have quit using MPG for single player games and am using the original Civ II for OCC. Between a friendlier AI, gifts and being stuck out on an island far away from the blood-thirsty AI, I finally had a decent chance. And, no, I didn't play Diety. I just wanted to hopefully win at least ONCE!

No log. Nothing to brag about. Just wanted to share the joy of colonizing space!

Be careful what you wish for...

Go back to MPG, play at raging hordes. It can be done! BUT, (there's that big BUT again), be prepared. I just tried my old ICS strategy in my latest game and got waxed. I'm afraid that "once on OCCer, always an OCCer".

First, let me say what I forgot to say in my first post... kongrats, no wait, cungrats, nope, that's not right, congratz, hold on, congratts... I give up, how do you misspell comgrats?

Seriously, congratulations MacUser. It is a great feeling, n'est-ce pas?

And yes, Oldman, it's tough to go back. Although, some of my problem is that I select "random" on most of the options when generating a world and sometimes get stuck on an island. (I'm not a big naval person)

Now that I think about it, your French comment just gave me an idea for a thread. Thanks.

Well done MacUser! I only ever played one OCC - 9, I think? (The road along the South Pole) Landed in 1825 about 200 years after most others! I had no trouble reverting back to ICS - everyone to their own.

Wait...him or me?

I do OCCs...just haven't really been able to win with anything spectacular. Now and then I do beat the AI by like one year...but that's about it

A cheat? I think it's kinda nice, you can have forward bases all over the world basically right?

couple of points - according to paul's OCC page, it doesn't forbid airbases, only airbases on hills within the city radius.

Second point: you can add me to those claiming the title of this thread

My first try was on Sten Sture's 4 whales comp game. no log, but then I was just trying to get the game in in a few hrs (took me about 5) Actually, I'm rather impressed with myself for the 1929 landing considering all the things I did "wrong"

I started out with bad hut luck (1 archer, 25 gold, 1 tech total) and only got about 4-5 techs (no gold) from the AI. never even got an alliance (v1.07c). Question here would be how many techs does it take to get an AI up to worshipful - i kept getting peace treaties, but that I was worthless to make an alliance with. I wound up being a republic around 1880BC and kept getting my caravans killed. I got 2 trade routes out in the BC, but didn't get the 3rd route until I sent 3 caravans out at once to give the AI raiders multiple targets (once they broke the peace, I kept getting gold or state-of-the-art tech demands, and just didn't want to give up that much for peace.

while i was getting my 2 discoveries per round most of the game, I didn't bother to check the list of needed discoveries, so in the early 1800's when I was trying to get space flight, i found out i needed to discover monarchy/feud/chiv etc first (tried to trade for techs, but the AI at this point was demanding things like automobile for the right to talk to them )

Also I miscounted the number of shields i needed and wound up with 75 shields instead of 80 when building the ship, so that slowed me down as well. Other mismanagement included not watching which bar (L/T/S) was adjusted when I was fiddling with the science rate and having my temple sold or my city going into disorder Also had the misfortune of having my NON settler killed off not long after industrialization. Other minor things were forgetting to sell things like the granary and the aquaduct until I was running out of gold trying to rush buy SS parts. All in all I'm happy though

Actually, I was wondering about the time spent on building airbases. But now I've just remembered (sheepish look) that the city doesn't build them, engineers do.

What's wrong with airbases? He might have had a city near many hills, and the airbases gave him extra food. Or he might have set up a perimeter of airbases near his one city, so that he can scout ahead.

I think their point is that the "official" apolyton OCC rules consider airbases a cheat, so they should not be used.

But hey, if you're just playing for fun, then who cares.
