Things you'd nearly forgotten about
I've been playing OCC exclusively for the past couple of years now, and so certain aspects of combat and "normal" strategy seem to have escaped from my knowledge of this great game - if they were ever there to begin with...

During the weekend, I started "re-inventing" normal type play with multiple cities and a different level of interaction with the AI. I found this neat little trick which most of you will probably know already and use on a regular basis; but it made me clap my little hands with joy

I'd bribed a Carthaginian city and moved a Frigate into it. The city was still in disorder resulting from the bribe and only held one defending Riflemen, when suddenly two Carthaginian Dragoons appeared next to the city. I took one out with my Riflemen, but I had to do something about the other one as well. Just for the heck of it, I tried attacking it with the Frigate from within the city, and lo and behold!: Much to my surprise it actually worked! I don't think I've ever conducted a shore bombardment from within a city before - I just didn't think along those lines at all. So I learned something new that day as well.

Have you recently (re-)discovered things about the game that put a smile on your face - or the opposite?

Winston, if that rowed your boat, try then disbanding the coastal city, moving one square inland to resettle. Move the ship into the city. Disband the city, et voila! You have your ship on a landlocked square. This allows you to move a battleship to an inland square as an excellent border guard. Or a whole row of them...

Search the threads, the Strategy and General forums were really buzzing earlier this year with many great ideas and discoveries.

I recently tried my hand at OCC for the first time. I built a trireme to ferry caravans across a small sea, and never upgraded my "fleet" because...well, because I was lazy. At one point I started moving my trireme, and then I realized that it had four movement points. I'd never (duh) built Magellan, so I was wondering what the heck was going on. That's when I realized that my trireme was nuclear-powered. I couldn't stop laughing.

It could be eliminated for 1 city/settler. But if you used 2, built the second city 1 square diagonally over, moved the ship, then disbanded the first city, and played leapfrog, it would still work. They'd have to outlaw cities touching at all.

Wasn't it illegal for cities to touch in Civ2 already?

Is there a list of "bugs" similar to the cheat list (maybe overlapping it)?

For instance, moving triremes in a size 1 city will sink. (Bug but not cheat.)

Hmmm... ***scratches head***

I don't play pure ICS, but I'm sure I did it by accident once... How long has it been? Since CivI? What a mindtrip... Oh, well. In the immortal words of Gilda Radner, "Neeeever mind."

GP, I think that the only way for a trireme to sink in a city is when the city is on a one tile island. The game checks that the trireme is not next to any land (even though it's on land it's surrounded by water) and lets it sink.

I'm probably wrong yet again, but I don't think the trireme would sink, even on a one square island.

Yup, KrazyHorse is right -- a trireme in a city on a 1 tile island is deemed by the Game Engine to be 'at sea' and has the appropriate probability of sinking!

One of my nastiest moments was building a trireme in such a city (OCC game) and having it sink before I moved it!!
