OCC Fortnight #7
Shouldn't it be about time for another OCC game? I'd volunteer to do one except I have MPG...

I have a scenario I'd be happy to donate - it might not be winnable as OCC, though. You start on the north pole, with all the AIs to the south, well out of trireme range. Handicaps are:

1) Fewer city squares than usual, because you're on the edge of the map. Three of the squares you can use are worthless glacier; the rest are ocean. Only three specials (two whales and one oil).

2) No early AI contact; no trading. You might have to build the Lighthouse or Marco Polo.

3) The AIs all start with four NONE settlers, to give them a head start.

I set this up to force myself to play a perfectionist game. I gave up at AD 1500 or so after getting completely bored with shipping caravans between my (12) cities.

I kind of have one that might work. I have to admit though that I haven't played OCC much at all so I don't know how well this one would turn out. Anyone willing to test it and give me some feedback? It was done in MPG version...not sure if that makes a difference.

Well Dave that sure sounds tough for OCC.

Why don't we let Paul try it and see how he does?

Thanks Talon, but I believe that although you can play a 2.42 game in MPG the converse is untrue and several of the OCCers seem to only have 2.42 ...

DaveV - I'll try anything once - I have oodles of experience at getting creamed by this game so bring on your arctic start and lets all make fools of ouselves ...

Excuse my humble interference, but what is OCC?

I have played Civ2 for longer than I care to count, but I have no idea what OCC is... sad, isn't it?

OCC = One City Challenge.

Anyway, a polar start does sound like a nice challenge. I don't expect 18th century AC landings on this one.

Please mail it to the address in my profile.

Hi Earthling,

Paul is being modest, he's probably the greatest exponent of OCC that we have here at Apolyton. If you would like to get a feel for this variation read Paul's indispensible manual at http://home.planet.nl/~belt0018/occ.htm and try one of the comparison games - they give you a good starting position. Once you are hooked - it is VERY addictive - come join us here - you will be most welcome

Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun . When the game is ready, Paul will post a message with a link for downloading.

Check out Paul's strategy guide before/while/after you play. The link was provided by SG1 a couple of posts ago.

Hi Oldman. I think you'll like OCC. I was getting bored with Civ until I discovered it, now I'm enjoying the game again. If you want to see how people did in the OCC#6 you can look at the thread or look at Paul's table for a condensed version. Usually the MPG guys don't do as well as the 2.42 guys since the AI doesn't cough up cash or techs as readily in MPG...

Ok, this seems like a real challenge. Its 600AD and I've just built Marco Polo. Boy are the AIs ahead of me tech wise. I've just researched Republic. I expect a 21st century landing at best on this one.

I'll say this is tough. I'm playing it on MGE and it's 1730. The romans are ahead of me on tech, and they won't trade. Worst of all, they've built Shakespear's theater.

But I suppose that's what I get for giving them medicine in a vain hope of getting some techs from them.

I'm not even sure if I'll bother to finish this one.

Gordon Bennett!! This is tough - I have taken an entirely different tech approach in the hope of circumventing the obvious problems. Result - its 700 AD and I haven't got Astronomy yet!
This could be one of my more spectacular failures!

Dang guys, sounds rough! I haven't started yet so I'm not sure of my strategy yet. I do know I won't be giving away Medicine! I also think if I do build an extra wonder, it won't be Marco but the Lighthouse to get those caravans delivered. The AI usually isn't too cooperative with me so Marco's would be a waste of time IMO. Any other thoughts? I plan on starting this weekend.

Yeah, look after medicine!!!!! i never bother with it in normal play when i've got 20 cities, so i'd forgotten all about it until i medicine from an exchange!!! but i messed up and didn't start the observatory early enough, so the spanish got it and i had to settle with marco polo!!

Hope this doesn't turn you off to OCC Oldman. Usually we have 4 specials, and usually at least one of them is a trade special. Are you using MGE or 2.42? On this one if you're using MGE I'd guess an AC time of late 20th century would be pretty good, going by what I've seen here. Oh wait, you say you're getting gifts from the Zulus. If you ARE playing MGE, please let the rest of us in on your secret! My typical tribute in the OCC is about 500-750 g in the course of the game; most of it comes pretty early. The 2.42 people seem to get 2000 - 2500g in tribute. Lucky sunsabiches!

Yeah, i'm playing 2.4 or something like that. i think i added a patch last year to make it 2.7 maybe?!?! i'll check!! but it's the old fashioned civ2!!!! Yeah, i reckon i must be close to 2k in gifts, plus a stack of tech's. Plus i shared world maps!!!!!
That NEVER happens to me normally?!!?

No, this hasn't turned me off OCC!!! i'm really enjoying it!! it gives me a target more than your standard game does!!! and it's quicker moving too!!!

Oldman, regarding logs:

-list all your advances (and the civ you got it from if you traded for it).

-list all your improvements

-list milestones like starting WLTPDs and when you reach size 12 and 21 (not that you will get to size 21 in this particular game). Also list your first 3 trade routes.

-I generally list all the tribute I receive, but it does becoming tiring. So consider it optional.

-One major purpose for the logs is for newcomers to learn, so take a look at some of the previous OCC challenge games.

After finishing this chanllenge game, why not go back and try previous ones. There's no time limit on finishing them, so go for it.

Cheers Tom, That's pretty much what i've been doing! I wouldn't mind if the zulu's were giving me more than 50 gold at a time as a gift, but 50!?!?!??! tight sods!!

I'll have to give some of the other ones a go sometime!! see how i fare against you fellas?!??!

I'm going to have to finish my game on monday - in scotland all weekend!! later...

Very interesting game. After all those 18th/early 19th century landings it took some getting used to a 1914 landing. But then again I realise that a year ago this woould have been considered a great score even on a good map. Anyway, here comes my log, so if you haven't played the game yet avert your eyes.

1914 AD "C.S.S. Your Name Here" arrives at Alpha Centauri

At the end I realised that if I mined those three plains I had gotten from the glaciers to forests I could get 80 shields, so it took some Engineer efforts to do that. I left the Oil alone; I figured I could use those shields. Nevertheless I was low on money so I took the risk of giving some science (including SF and Plastics) to my allies so that I could keep asking for gifts. I did make some mistakes because I wasn't paying enough attention to the game occasionally, but I think this is a good result.

Well, wasn't that fun? It just goes to show how spoilt we've all become.

It pains me to report that I failed to get to AC first. I was beaten by 1 year by the ******* Zulus.

Looking back on it, I might have made it if I'd got some engineers to improve the terrain, rather than relying on just 1 to keep pollution down.

Anyway, here's my log.
