I still like the settings for which the game was designed: 1x1x.

In 1x production, all the terrain types can be used; mining hills or irrigating grass/plains actually makes sense. 2x production overemphasizes trade, since you can pull in such outrageous numbers of arrows. Shield output is limited by pollution, even in the BC years.

1x movement is the best balance between offense and defense. Why build crusaders when catapults can move and attack? And diplomats with double movement are virtually unstoppable.

I voted for 2x production and 1x movement... and this shouldn't surprise anybody that has played with our "group".

I like that 2x production speeds up the early part of the game (and considering many games don't go more than one session...)
I also agree that 2x movement really changes the combat. Yes, a catapult that can move and fire on the same turn Plus, 2x movement for mounted units and diplo's allow them to come out of nowhere (we won't even mention explorers)

So given a choice, 2x1x for me. I know it isn't true civ, but I find it more enjoyable.

1x1 is the best but 2x1 is not too bad.Well sometimes it is but at least I don't have to put up with 2 move cats and 4 move dips.Or waiting while others moves swarms 12 squares each over rivers and roads.

How come 1x1 never really caught on?Things are slower but I always found turns were faster as less units with less moves...just less of everything goes much faster

Remember irrigation?

My vote was 2x production 1x moves.
I don't really like 2x moves.

1x is a faster game than 2x, both Civ time and regular time, naturally.

This makes me think, has anyone seriously played a 1x2x game before? That is a truly awful setting

Civ2 works best with 1x1x whether it's single or multiplayer. Doubling either production or movement takes away from the quality of the game because it is not designed to work like that. Sure you can do it, but it screws things up.

BP do you ever play much MP?

When we started MP, we played 1x1x. But we suffered the normal bane for MP, "one session games" So we found that 1x1x was just too slow and not much would happen in one session. That's when we moved to 2x1x. One session games are now much more entertaining. Yes, it makes the game different, but far from "Screwing it up".

Different strokes for different folks.

You know what Rich.... i would love to do a x1x1 game again.... say a regular game on a certain night...... (fri or sat) and play it through regardless of the start someone gets.....

sure it will take awhile..... sure it will be slow...... but in reality it will produce more wars, longer tech advantages.... and in general if we continue , more practice during the mid game.

I am tired of "tech tree" games now....... the only advantage someone gets is when the units are powerfull enough and we never get there.

sure there are minor skirmishes but no great wars. With x1 you can't drop all your cities in the forest or on hills/mountains.

I am sure once we recover from the early we would be fine.

Not too mention , with civ3 coming out, its a good way to get back into the habit of "normal" production
