Limit on Scientists?
With 16 scientists in my top city, any extra citizens become Elvis & can't be changed, even if I make some scientists taxmen. Is this normal?

And what are the "rules" for increasing science thro' trade?

(Civ2 with patch)

yes 16 is the limit.

set up trade routes.Seek out cities with high trade potential.Foreign is generally more lucrative in both bonus and long term trade route.Connect with roads if possible then RR.This increases trade routes. If both cities have airports there is more bonus added to the routes.

Build markets, banks, stock exchange, superhighways. Then you can devote more taxes to science and less to luxuries. You can get 50+ beakers in small cities without even a library.

Democracy has no corruption and the best trade #s so use it.

Thanks for the input.

I was specifically interested in any relationship between beaker gain and cash gain, demand, etc when sending goods to the Science City.

Sometimes beakers goes up after a delivery, other times there's no change.

For the bonus from the delivery, beakers gained are exactly equal to gold gained.
Whether there is a turnly increase in beakers depends on your science percentage. The trade from trade routes is simply added to the trade from working the city area, and the science, tax and luxury percentages are taken from the total.

iirc the bonus can never exceed more than 2/3 of what is left.So delivery just after an advance is optimal.

You may have existing routes replaced. This can be a problem if you are sending caravans to your SSC.A +7 can be replaced by a +3.I get the most lucrative routes I can and then stop delivering to the city until I find a better city then 3 caravans are quickly off to that city.Look at the routes.Pick the highest and set up new routes with that city ASAP.

Smash - that (route replacement) probably explains a drop in SC's science that was puzzling me. It had 906 beakers, then it fell to under 900 although population was same or higher.

So don't just send any old unwanted (by any city) goods to the Science City?

I check the trade arrows being generated in the city of origin. If it is close tp the amount of my trade route city then I'll go ahead and deliver. If a route does get replaced it will be replaced by an equal or darn close. If the origin city has significantly less trade arrows the that caravan goes somewhere else

Does anybody know the maximum bonus received for a trade route? I think I played around near the end of one game and got a 900gold bonus, but I didn't know or use all of the factors then.

Don't know about a max but I routinely get trade boosts of over 2000 gold when I ship Uranium via an airport. I think the max I ever got was up around 2800 gold but I'm not positive.
