Giga random maps !
My modification of the civ2 multiplayer program is now in the Apolyton database. It is called no-limits and allows the program to create giga random maps up to 32'767 squares. It's definitely worth trying and leads to more AI efficiency (I dare not to say intelligence). Please excuse me for making my own publicity, but I think it is something that might interest all civers.
(and I will soon propose a ToT version).

Thanks Julius, should be fun to try out. Hmmm, a 20 x 1600 map with Bloodlust ?

It's coming soon, at least I hope so.
I've finished it and posted it to Apolyton.

What version of civ2 do you have ?
I'm surprised ! it has been tested and should work fine. Go to new game/custom mapsize, and try something like 143x229, does it not work ?

Works fine for me... those random maps are HUGE, 'nuff said...

Mercantile, did you try map sizes with dimensions larger than 250 on a side?

Well 20x1600 would not be possible. The limit for borders is still 250. But, a .mp file can be hexedited to have 20x1600. Only, it will be an empty map and up to you to fill it. Sorry, for the little deception. If you want, I can send you an empty 20x1600 map file.

I downloaded this yesterday. The maps are huge, n'est-ce pas?

But, I now have a slight hitch in my controlling commands. When I pull down the list for Saving, Quitting, etc., I seem to be missing one near the top of the list and everything else is moved up. Unfortunately, while the .exe is moved up, the label still shows the one above. For instance, when I try to "Exit", I'm actually choosing "Music".

I can get around this by choosing the correct slot in the list but it was a bit confusing at first. Anybody else run into this?

Don’t worry Kcbob, your favorite game isn’t going mad. You have guessed the problem. It’s with the menu.txt The problem is that you haven’t installed patch 1.3 and my no-limits add-on includes the improvement of 1.3 One of the improvements is a new option on the menu, hence the fact some of the commands are wrong. If you want, I can send you the correct menu.txt or you can change it all by yourself, comme un grand garçon. All you need to do is to make it look like that. Sorry for the little inconvenience.

A quick question: do you need MGE to load and play the giga maps?

Yes, MGE or ToT. At least to my knowledge. You wouldn't risk much by trying to load a map ...
I've heard any version of civ II on the Mac would work, but I'm not sure ...

Gigamaps are great, but I have a concern. Bigger maps will mean more cities are created. With 255 cities being the max this limit will be hit FAR more often & drastically alter a game's outcome.

What can be done to prevent this? I'm thinking an increase in production cost for a settler/engineer might be the only solution. Suggestions?

That or a mostly water world with VAST oceans. However, even with unsinkable tierimes (sp?), the AI would have a problem island hopping.
