less aggressive AI
is there a patch/mod pack or anything or anyway i can have a less aggression AI so that when i have never declared war once, or been in any conflict but have massed techs and population, the AI dosn't feel the need to thwart my efforts of passifism.

I mean, why would some one feel the need to attack a Ghandi style civ?

I don't know of any mod-packs but you can always opt to play on Chieftain level and the AI will be fairly kind to you.

But the AI will never just sit back and let you get too powerful or too technologically advanced. Well, it sometimes will actually leave you alone until you discover space flight and then all bets are off. The AI will send an army of dips/spies to "acquire" this tech. But maybe this doesn't happen in Bloodlust mode?!?

If you play with the MGE version, the AI is programmed to be more aggressive. As fittstim says, even the gentler civs won't sit back and let you win. The best you can hope for is choosing the perfectionist civs at startup. Even that won't do more than buy you time to secure your borders. Build fortresses on good defensive terrain once you're done expanding. Set two good defenders in each fortress. The AI will send suicide missions all thru the end game...

in MGE, the AI will always act in more aggressive ways than in earleier versions, no matter how advanced you actually are. I doubt it's programmed to be so, it's a mere bug if you ask me

is the AI similarly aggressive in TOT?

The Andy-Man,

Short answer: no.

The "rational" civs are less likely to declare war and more likely to trade stuff. They are: Celts, Babylonians, Spanish, Americans, and Indians. (The Celts and Spanish are expansionists and therefore not necessarily good choices for you.)

The "perfectionist" civs are more contend to have a small number of cities and have less desire to grow at your expense. They are: Babylonians, Japanese, Germans, Aztecs, and Persians. (The Japanese and Germans are aggressive and therefore not good choices for you.)

I'd suggest the Babylonians, Egyptians, Aztecs, Chinese, Persians, and Indians.

You can make any and all civs "rational perfectionists" (and "civilized" as well) by editing the rules.txt. The posters in the
Civ2 - Creation forum can tell you how.

As people have already warned, once you pass a certain year or discover space flight - all the AI gang up on you. This is to make the game tougher and more "interesting", though obviously it's not for everyone. I don't know of any way to change this timed aggression.

The AI often comes right out and tells you "Our people grow jealous of your privileged lifestyle." As in the real world, mere greed can be enough of an incentive to attack peaceful neighbors.

that sucks... I think it's a step backwards, it completely removes the diplomacy from CIV, it supports isolationism

This increased aggressiveness by the AI as the SP approaches victory is clearly programmed in. The idea is to make the player earn the victory. It is a gaming convention, not a thwarting of the use of diplomacy. Sid designs games that are reasonably realistic, but still fun, as in challenging. There would be little challenge to a player who is running away with the victory and is being ignored by the AI.

Yes, it's also a lot less pliable when it comes to ponying up tribute.

My experience is that the TOT AI still respects power - its still quite possible to use the ICS- get tribute strat, for example. What becomes almost impossible is OCC, though.

One surefire way I've found to avoid this problem is simply to avoid being the "supreme" power when this happens. Anything up to and through "mighty" means you will have at least two civilizations that are on friendly terms with you (at least enough so that you can complete the game successfully).

As for achieving this situation ... hmm ... well, play at a higher level ("king" or above). That helps immensely, though nothing can be done about your tech or military, unless you arbitrarily hold one or both back. I usually play at King and keep a purely defensive military. That helps immensely in avoiding the post-1750 AD aggression and even when spaceflight is discovered. On a slight note, I do believe a good reputation delays the inevitable attacks.
