Please, no 3D units!
Civ3 should have an option for going back to 2D units, rather than the 3D ones we've seen in the previews so far. There are two reasons why:

1. Scenario creation: In Civ2, scenarios were abundant and diverse, while in SMAC there are virtually no good ones. There must be thousands of Civ2 scenarios, but less than thirty for SMAC. This was mainly because it was basically impossible to change unit graphics. Their was no way to create a fantasy scenario, a space scenario, etc. In Civ2 it was wonderfully easy.

2. 3D units are just plain ugly.

Maybe I'm really wrong about this but as far as I remember some Firaxian said that it will be possible to use 2D Units to create scenarios or whatever.

  • 2D units will be easy to make and include in civ3. Firaxis has said this several times.
  • 3D animated units are more fun than 2D

they might be more fun when done in the right way, but they make custom scenarios look ugly compared to the standard game

unlike in CIV 2, where scenarios used to be better than the standard game, concerning graphics and sounds as well

Like I said, Ecthelion, it's all customizable. Also - Not everyone plays scenarios. You think that because a few people like to make their own units in scenarios, that everyone who plays the game should be stuck with old civ2 graphics?

I didn't say I'm against 3D units, I'm actually for animated 3D units. I only tried to raise some possible disadvantages in a rather humorous way... see?

Aynway, how is the 'scenario problem' going to be solved? I suppose most of the scenario designers will keep using simple 2D sprites for units, but there will also be some designing complete unit graphics, with more than only one sprite per unit. scenarios like those will probably be more popular, so more designers will try to do that. But then again, it's a lot of work for one person... I see more co-designing coming up in the future, as moore scenarios will have their own graphics designers, historical experts etc.... should become fun to observe the CIV 3 scenario scene

Ecthelion, you think that someone's actually going to make their own 3D unit graphics?! Yea right. Just look at SMAC.
