give tech, lose alliance!!!!!

i was playing a SP game, and had an alliance with the spanish, when they asked for cerimonial burial. i gave it to them, and then they say they've cancelled the alliance!!! of ourse i proceded to destroy them, but still, i thought that whenever you gave an ai civ a tech they kept an alliance. has this ever happened to anyone else?
