I've not heard or seen anything about it but it's a important question horsie. It has been debated before and is very important. I'll look around if I see anything... If anyone know anything please enlighten us!

I haven't seen anything so far that supports the idea of stacked units are in civ3, unfortunately..

That was the only good thing about ctp 1/2...

I've only heard the basics of stacked combat. How the units will attack and defend together, that it takes four cities or a leader to create an army, etc... Somewhere before I heard that you will now be able to retreat. This is all info. we have all heard, though, except maybe the retreat option.

On the other hand, is it really so difficult simply to accept everything that one has been brought up on and that has gradually struck deep roots – what is considered truth in the circle of moreover, really comforts and elevates man? Is that more difficult than to strike new paths, fighting the habitual, experiencing the insecurity of independence and the frequent wavering of one’s feelings and even one’s conscience, proceeding often without any consolation, but ever with the eternal goal of the true, the beautiful, and the good? - F.N.

2 questions
Will there be a limet of the amount of unites in an armie? Like in CTP there was a limit of 9 unites and in CTP 2 a limit of 12 unites.

If a city is attacked, will all units defend or just 1 per turn (like in Civ I+II).

Just sent the following question to the "Ask the CIV3 Team"

I don't know if they'll answer, but it's worth the try!

Subject: Stacking of Units

Hi Firaxis! August 15 2001

Just a quick question. Will CIV3 have the ability of stacking units together and have them move/attack/defend as one force (like in CTP/CTP2) or will they only attack/defend as one unit at a time?

Thank-you and keep up the great work! ;-)

Here are a couple of snippets from:
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3infocenter.shtml

"Armies. Like a transport, you can place different units in an army and move them around together. Say you have a tank and an infantry guy in an Army, and someone attacks. The unit with the best defense will stand up and do the defending until he gets worn down by the battle, then he will stop and the other will stand up and defend. The same thing happens in attack. So big armies are really, really powerful. In order to combat somebody who's got armies you pretty much have to build your own. It's an escalating thing which has a big impact on the game."

"Units that have a speed advantage over their opponent will be able to retreat from combat, but you will also be able to launch an "assault", where your units will essentially attack until they win or are killed."

It looks like Pembleton has answered our questions.

It seems interesting that units don't fight to death but instead until it's worn out. I predict that this will mean that the best tactic is to roam the map with a small number of large armies and maybe a few smaller ones for patrol and skirmishes much like many wars before modern time.
