No, you got it wrong.

Gunpowder makes all the ancient units obsolete, not medieval units. You can still build knights and crusaders, say.

I would think that a resource that significant and important would be readily available so those events wouldn't occur. I doubt your Knights would be obsolete by Gunpowder though.

Iron deposits, for example, would HAVE to be plentiful in the world, at least near Civ starting points, since it is of great importance to defense and growth. Otherwise the game would get unbalanced, especially if the provider of the Iron hates you.
