Civ3 Movie!!!
I downloaded and watched the new civ3 movie!! Wow! It includes footage of a settler founding a city, a city expanding its borders, setting priorites in the tech tree (?), diplomacy, a shot of the wonders screen, which includes:

The pyramids
The hanging gardens
The colossus
The great lighthouse
The great library
The oracle
The great wall
Art of War (?)
Sistine chapel
great observatory

To show who has built this, the leader picture is next to the wonder (hammurabi in a top hat!), plus it shows the date of construction and location.

Also, the diplomacy screen, and shots of modern units (!!!!!) Looks like a tank and a battleship. Plus the palace, city view, and city screen.

Wow!!!

I was going to post this thread first, but I thought that would make me look too positive. Actually, it is quite impressive footage. Not particularly packed-full of the information we are seeking, but it shows a game that looks quite polished graphically.

My only question: Why doesn't Poly get this stuff first, eh, Markos and Dan?

Another question: any Germans willing to translate? I've only taken a 1 semester introductory class in it, so I'm not catching everything the narrator's saying.

There is a translation at Civfanatics.com.

Why don't Mark and Dan get it first? Because their news editors suck .

And as usual we forgot adding the link to that download-page. Is it available on Firaxis official site, or somewhere else?

what, you're now ending your civ3 career and start an apolyton career to compete with GP or something?

It looks pretty sweet, a large step from ctp2. I can now appreciate why it requires 300Mhz.

Hey, Markos:

1) I have no idea what that even means. Are you angry or making a good joke? How would I know?

2) If you are making a good joke, O.K. ... I am laughing, too:

3) But if you are angry, you have no need to be and it is totally uncalled for. In fact, you should apologize. I am asking an honest question: Why is a German-language site being given the best footage to date when an English-language site like Poly has been busting itself for a long, long time supporting Firaxis' games? Are they trying to appeal to a German audience that might otherwise ignore the game? Are they planning little things like this for a bunch of sites and Poly just has to wait?

What? Please no inside jokes, since I don't follow all the back alleys here at Poly.

well, first of all, it's not a simple german site, gamestar.de is the site of big german games magazine(btw, i cant seem to find the video on gamestar.de). plus, it was created by the magazine

second, while of course things could be better, this is the site that published the first civ3 artwork in the world, relayed Sid's personal note on the "BHG situation", etc. Just recently we were the first post the new of the civ3 beta. And pretty soon we'll have more interesting stuff once our operatives catch up with some firaxians that are chasing around the office

and with the way our financial status is going very soon we'll be to have our own permanent tv crew outside and inside firaxis' offices monitoring everything

Ah, I see. I assumed that GP was up to some dastardly deeds lately...

Poly is doing great. I don't want to take away from the other sites, either. Hey...call me overly-protective.

I just checked the translation, and while it is not too-literal, it is quite accurate. However, one correction needs to be made:

'You have to research the bulk of technologies of a certain time era first, before you can go on to the next one'.

This corresponds with previous statements that you can skip 'arts' (e.g. literature).

i gotta agree with yin, sort of. why doesn't this kinda stuff appear at official civ site? i mean, they could have easily included that footage there. it is kinda silly to patch all the screenshots from dozen or so pages. is it so hard to add 5 every week to civ.3 com?

i mean, SOMEONE sends that material over to all these sites. that SOMEONE may just as well paste it to civ3.com. i wanna one-stop-shop

I guess that the German (and Austrian ) audience is quite interested in 'strategy' and 'builder' games. Three years ago, about 400.000 copies of '1602 A.D.' were sold, and recently the market was flooded with the german versions of Call to Power 2 ( ), the Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack ( ) and Tropico ( ). (BTW, CtP2 became a dead article pretty fast.)

Well, I have to just add my 2 cents: the footage indeed looks very impressive. The game looks really nice graphically and looks very smooth. I love those unit animations. They are better than ctp2's.

Yes, a modern tank, (Abrahams?), not the WWII model we can see on the new www.firaxis.com site

What a pity I can't see its statistic data clear enough

Actually, I'm glad the German audience is demanding and making good games like this. It keeps the market alive.

As for GP's whining, I didn't know about that. Buy HEY! YIN A WHINER?! Never happened before, you know...

Looking at screenshot taken from movie http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3image...iv3gs_crimson/ I get additional info.

Disclaimer: check by yourself, my eyes and my screen have some limits

Wonders
SETI Program, showed in construction small bottom-right screen (I don't remember if already confirmed)

Units stats
As reflected in game shots: maybe changed by status and/or wonders effects

Battleship (veteran status) 24:8:20 2/4
Galley 1:1:2/3
Advanced Armour (veteran) 24:16(?) 3/3
Settler 0:0 1/1 (this not surprising )

I can't remember the usual sequence I suppose it is Attack Defense health left/max health

If not by my mistake, Battleship has a digit more in statistic: related with long range bombardment?

Please help!

I guess since there is going to be no demo, Firaxis is going to need these videos to be put on all the main online magazine sites to just get the word out. Many people like demos before they decide (it is the reason I bought Tropico, Imperialism, and a few others). So the videos are going to be semi-replacements.

So I am waiting for the English video coming soon.

Wonder Animations
Looking at the city screen in the video, I noticed that the wonders did not seem to have any animations.

I figured that the wonder animations that are intended to appease the video lovers would appear here but I guess not.

Anyone know where these wonder animations would appear?

I guess they appear only once - when the wonder is finished.

There are no cutscene wonder movies like in Civ 2. Only in-game animations (for things like the Great Wall, I would guess). That's been officially verified by the "Ask the Civ Team" page, IIRC.

From the Gamestar video, you can see great animations, top graphics, and the following 10 Wonders:

* the Pyramids
* the Colossus
* the Hanging Gardens
* the Great Lighthouse
* the Great Library
* the Great Wall
* Sistine Chapel (replacing Michelangelo's Cathedral, I guess)
* the Oracle
* Art of War (replacing Sun Tzu's War Academy, I guess)
* Great Observatory (replacing Copernicus' Observatory, I guess)

You can also see some skyscrapers in the City View screen, behind the Colossus. New minor Wonder?

If they distribute the stuff randomly/widespread then fan site editors/fans have to search for the stuff and so become more excited about it than if its just handed to them on a plate by the main web site. This excitement is then passed over to the fans that they distribute the newly found stuff to, and so people get all around more excited about the whole thing.

If they distributed it all on the civ3.com site, then to convey the same amount of excitement to the fans they would have to present it in an extremely excited way, and it would just end up failing and looking false (As there is no way their own webmaster would be _really_ excited by a new screenshot)

My theory I posted about what Firaxis is doing with units stats (posted it when the Egyptians became the Civ of the Week) seems to be true. My theory was that Firaxis was making the ancient units have worse stats while increasing all other ages stats. Why would they do this?

First off, to make gaining the benefits of each new age's units. In civ2 you could survive using ancient units until the modern times came. When the modern times came you cuould then start building your military again. Being able to do that could give you a huge advantage in the long run. Now you will have to build units from each age because of the large gap in units stats between different ages.

Secondly, war will be more appealing in all ages, except in ancient times where it will be equally appealing. War will be more appealing because now your units will have pretty good stats even if it's a knight. I think more strategy might be involved for modern war with the way units stats have been done.

Third, the stats will be more compatible with some new implementations included. Such things as the new movement rule on enemy territory roads/railroads. This might have been very unbalanced with units having poorer stats than what they have in civ3.

Fourth, with the given stats the chance of a "phalanx beating a tank" is more highly improbable. Don't come back with a smart remark saying that the phalanx isn't being included and that's it's now called a spearmen.

Overall, I'm very glad to see it this way.

A little detail from the city view (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3image...imson/snap.jpg): Luxuries increase the happiness of up to four citizens per city.

BTW, some new info from the Gamestar Article, found at civfanatics.com:

- New Point System: Your rating is constantly evaluated so you no longer can clean up pollution 10 years before landing on AC since the 100 years of pollution already messed up your rating

- Airstrikes: Later in the game airstrikes allow a selective destruction of specific buildings.

Last, but not least, a screenshot showing a histograph: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3image...powergraph.jpg.

It says "Owned by: Babylonians" under each of the wonders!

Would it says this if this was minor wonders? I think not! I think we're looking at 10 of the 12 major wonders? And if this was a combination of minor and major wonders wouldn't it say under each of them if this was minor or major?

Do you think I'm right? - or am I forgetting some fact?
