OCC "fortnight" #25 - size 4 challenge
Samson's recent posts about doing OCC with smaller cities inspired me to a new fortnight game. It is a slightly edited random map. The city site has two whales and two wine, with a plains square as the centre. This means that you have exactly the right amount of food for 4 citizens when you work the 4 specials. For this game, you are not allowed to grow your city larger than size 4.

There was a hut next to the starting position which I already popped to take away at least some of the luck. It gave a horseman. You can download the zip file with the save here. Good luck.

I created it with 2.42, so you should be able to play it with any version of Civ2, except ToT.

I'd like to play this comparison game, it sounds like fun! But as you may know, I've had some trouble in the past composing a decent log of the games I play.

Could someone please point me to an example of how a log should be laid out in order for others to benefit the most from it? Thanks.

Gave it a go last night. Conceded in 1885 after being sneak attacked by the Egyptians and lost two citizens. Forgot the log at home, will post it later.

Made a couple of obvious mistakes. One was quite funny; I irrigated a forrest and roaded it before realising I would never use it!

Went straight for republic, but I got it fairly late. Also, I couldn't get on-line to check Oedo years so I spent almost max number of turns in anarchy.

My settler was killed so after barbs destroyed one of the mines I couldn't fix it.

Speaking of barbs, there were lots of them. Must be a barb hot spot. But I had big problems getting the leaders. At one point there were four or five running across the location...

Very hard time getting money from allies, had constantly 4-44 gold in treasury (except when I got 650 gold for declaring war against another civ). Trading didn't give much, all other civs I met were on same continent and with only a size 4 city...

Log will come.

Good luck to the rest of you!

Bad Luck Carolus, I used 2.42 and had a much easier time of it. Wasted a lot of time getting to Monarchy. Skipped Republic and celebrated in Monarchy instead before going to Democracy. No barbs since my city was surrounded by the Carthaginians (who I was allied with the entire game).
Didn't need any luxuries in Democracy so I probably should have sold the stock exchange and bank (running 0-10% tax anyway). Got just under 10000g in tribute . Found I had entirely different priorities - sanitation, refrigeration, medicine - why bother, picked up some nasty techs in huts though. Best I got was a tech every 4 turns. Needed to build a manufacturing plant to get over 30 shields (structural every turn using 1 freight). Eventually landed in 1934, 2 years before Egyptians and 7 years before the Carthaginians. Should have been much sooner if i hadn't of got sidetracked on the way to Monarchy. I'll post the log later.

This was a tougher start than my first size4 game - less trade and no starting techs.
I briefly got 3 turns per tech, then a long run at 4 turns, falling to 5 in the late game.
Like Carolus I had barbs all over me in the mid game.
I build a diplomat, bribed the crusaders, and hunted down the leaders with them.

Good alliances, lots of gifts, except for the Vikings who bailed on me.
Kept looking for the 7th civ, didn't realize until Apollo that there wasn't one.
Or did I miss a message about somebody being destroyed early on?

Compared to my first size4 effort, this game had better production and less trade/science.
The bottleneck here was research whereas in the other game it was cash/caravans.
Last game I had to delay Space Flight waiting for my caravan/gold supply to catch up.
This time I barely got Fusion Power in time to launch yet I had cash left over.

Space Flight 1834
Apollo 1836
Launched in 1867
AC in 1882

Will post log later.

This was easier than I thought.Gifts went thru the roof.I had more than enough gold and 40+ freights/caravans that the SS was built long before I had the techs.I was swamped with barbs but they didn't cause too much trouble.A wandering nomad was able to fort and RR my wine hills so pillaging was not a problem.I was also able to "mine off" some possible ai city sites so I had no problem with ai intuders until the usual late game diplomats and sneak attack. All of which I was able to repel.
Trade bonus' was dismal until superhighways. But there was nothing else to do all game cept build caravans and freights.
I had one research hiccup that I was able to solve by gifting what was left and Combustion.I was leary about it but research went 4>8>4 so it had to be done.I spent some time at 3 turns,5 and 6 but mostly 4.
The ai couldn't have researched more than 10 techs combined.I think I over did it with early tech gifting forcing them into extremely long research times. As a result I had to research many techs that normally come from the ai civs such as map making, bridge building, iron working,pottery,seafaring..a few more also.

I noticed there were only 6 civs fairly early as family size showed 6th with no excess food being generated.Later population rank confirmed it.It may have been good for me as I undertook a polar expedition hoping to find a purple settler on the pole and found America instead.

Nice game, Smash.

I gave up on trade early because of the low payoffs.
You made it work, cashed in at the end and beat me.
I read and learn.

About all I see is I nixed Mobile Warfare and Robotics.Thats at least 8 turns.Probably 10
I didn't see any need for a manufacturing plant with over 8000 gold and some 40 odd caravans/freights.I was capable of 25 sheilds.I could buy a barracks, switch to wonder leaving 20 sheilds, run 1 freight and be within city production for structurals.Components and modules were a snap.I finish The Wall or other 300 sheid wonder and let the city finish the Modules.I had lots of gold left over.
If I could do one thing different it would be to slow down a little on tech gifting early so the AI would still be capable of researhing a few techs for me.I can imagine their early science rates must have been awful after all the early gifting.Probably something like 50+ turns.IIRC I got Gunpowder,Conscription and Economics from the ai later but would rather have had Iron,Feud,Map etc early from them.

Again I was surprised how easy it was to do.AIs did nothing but help with gold.Man they get alot of it in a game.During several spurts,I was getting gifts EVERY turn...and just when I was sure they were going to cancel, they fork over 100 or 150 or even 200!Without the tribute and gifts it would have been much tougher.I just don't see how a MGE player is going to get enough gold..but...

You had about twice as much gold as I did to build the SS and a couple thousand
was from late caravans it looks like. I couldn't afford not to have a Manf. Plant
and that cost me two advances. I was ahead of you at Computers and Flight but delayed SF to build
more caravans. I should have done more long-distance trade and played less conservatively.
Still, I ended up only 3 turns behind. I need to be more aggressive in my endgame.

Kept looking for that 7th civ, and early on, the key civ always seemed to be the next one I hadn’t found yet, but when I located them all, I gave them embassies early, which led to a lot of free tech through trades, and also let me monitor gold for gift timing. I think those 5 early diplomats were well worth delaying the Colossus.

Midgame, the Vikings kept demanding gold, so I would fork it over, along with some techs. Then I would ask for a gift and get most if not all of my gold back! Carthaginians, not to be outdone, joined the fun. Gotta love this kind of AI experience!

I sure think now that the key to samson’s system is all extra gold, because in former games, gold has always been the thing hardest to come by, delaying science wonders, etc. Here, I was able to just BUY half of Copernicus, a new experience for me in OCC!

Thanks again to samson for something new to try, and to Paul for putting together an excellent situation for this type of game. I suspect he might have anticipated Rome also being pathetic and becoming the key, and thus the reason for only 6 civs. If not, take credit anyways, Paul, because this made for a more interesting game!

Ribannah will no doubt try it with MGE and beat us all in gifts received!

Got killed by the Vikings. A Viking ship started killing my caravans, so I thought it would be a smart idea to move them inland and leave them nothing to kill. Unfortunately I didn't think about paratroopers.

Paul, reminds me of my first riv2.scn game, where barbarians just walked into undefended Rome! In this game, if the Egyptians had learned combined arms, or if they had sent a transport with ground units along with all those aegis cruisers, our landing dates would have been the same, never. Next time, I'm going to think it over more before giving away so many of the good military techs later in the game.

Smash, I also couldn't believe all the gold through gifts, though I did not manage as much as you. You are right about too much tech giving early, too. Embassies are great for telling when and how much to give. With only 25 shields (5 short of completing structurals), I tried two other things besides rushing barracks: 1) Earlier, when it became apparent that 30 shields were out of reach, I tried to bribe every barb I ran into, using them later to disband while building structurals, saving quite a bit over the cost of buying a barracks (160g). I also sacrificed spare diplomats and other cheap units when doing this. 2) For the few structurals where I had nothing to disband, I would start a wonder with a caravan, switch to structural, and just buy the remaining 30 shields for 120g, saving 40g over the rushed barracks way of doing it; however, with all the extra gold you managed, I guess you weren't looking that hard for ways to economize!

samson, just got to repeat my wow of admiration for discovering the efficacy of smaller-sized cities and especially for the discovery of how to determine the key civ. Just how did you think of this? What frame of mind do you have to be in to discover things like this?

The AI tribes were hopeless in this game, they simply would not expand, or even have cities grow beyond size 7. Nor did they research much, from Feudalism to Space Flight the Romans had to do it all . We were lucky to trade for Monarchy!
What saved us was the road, later railroad, we built to the small Viking empire, so in mid-game we could quickly deliver coal and gold - until the commodities dried up, that is.
I refrained from a quickstart from building settlers at size 1.
