1024x768 on 12.1inch laptop screen - too small?
Your thoughts?

Nonsense - the rule is if you can make it out, it ain't too small.

( BTW - If you've got bad sight I probably wouldn't recommend it. If you've not got bad sight you'll probably develop it sharpish )

n.b I'M doing 1024 X 786 on a 15" ( I think )

Absolutely. I have a 19" monitor ( which is OK for 1024x768 ) and I consider the 21" to be ideal to display ALL 1024x768 software. Just try Startopia ( download the free demo, it's worth it ), play it at 1024x768. The graphics are superb, but just try to read the text at a reasonable distance - without sticking your nose to the screen: readable, but barely - ridiculously small. Very small icons too.
But so far, the Civ III screens and icons are a "reasonable" 1024x768 setting and I think playable on a 17", but for a more enjoyable gameplay consider at least 19".

Unsupported?
I dunno about you, by my laptop has a 12.1in screen, and it simply won't support anything over 800x600. You may be S.O.L.

I have an unfortunate situation of having a 200MHz desktop with a 17", and a 450MHz laptop. So I'll really only be able to play Civ3 by hooking up the monitor to the laptop... ugh.

I play loads of games on my 11.1" laptop screen and at 1024x768 - its a small form factor IBM X21, so nice and fast, nice and small and nice and light.

And CIV3 will play beautifully on it!!!

Roll on 2nd Nov (my prediction for the UK release)

1600x1200 displayed on 15.1" ?? But what about reading text? Doesnt the letters float together and become unreadable? This problem already begins slightly with 768x1024 res on 15" monitors. In Civ-3 one must be able to read some interface & feedback-text.

also rember that a 15.1" lcd screen is all screen, while a 17" monitor is often 15"or 16"(if your lucky) of viewible screen. and with laptops, you tend to sit closer to the screen than with desktops. i do not have any problems reading the screen although some people might not like it.

Don't think that this will help in Civ3 though as it doesn't use the underlying OS for its settings....

Uhm...usually the manufacturer sets a recommended resolution...I don't know what the manufacturer of your laptop set as the recommended resolution of your laptop...
I run 1024x768 on both my 17" CRT monitor and my laptop...but my laptop has a 14.1" screen...(both the recommended and most comfortable resolutions...IMO...)

My thought on laptops:
Laptops are not usually considered the premiere of 'PC gaming platforms'.

Don't expect any symapthy if you have to squint

Notebooks really $**k$ or refuse to start game that ask for 3d graphic cards, so any player of FPS, Drive and Flight Simulators and many others game was used to hate the notebook hw.

OTOH, if you are a commuter father of two, with a couple of spare hour sitting on the train, and almost nothing free from children attention and sleep needs....

I had to pass on many games because of HW limits, but... now a come back is possible: Dell Inspiron with a GeForce2Go 32MB card will have all the steam you need to play Civ III and better ( ) games.

OT side note
Jahi, would you be so kind to send a PM to me with some "user feel" about your Dell? I'll greatly appreciate a "first hand review" of an expensive HW before buying it! Thank you in advance

That sounds pretty good for a laptop - what's the battery life though and how thick is the box? Nothing worse than having "just one more turn" and the battery dies....
