Localised versions
I'm not living in any English-speaking country, but anyway I want to play CivIII in English - I started with Civ in English and when I saw the localized version of CivII I felt sick - I fetched an English copy.
Question: even if we buy the localized version, will we be able now to choose English as a language?
Is this something up to Firaxis or Infogames or it depends on the local retailer?

Good question. I wish I could answer you. Since I'm in the U.S., it's not a problem for me, but I would like to bump this thread up so that this important question stays at the top.

I hate localized versions too, but I'm getting the UK version anyway to get the game sooner...

I don't know if English will be included in localized versions, but if it isn't, you should complain to Firaxis.
IIRC, there was an "English patch" for the localized versions of Black And White because people complained that B&W didn't include English...

You're not the only one who hopes for the english version. We had a big ague about this one some time ago, and as far as I remember it ended like this: People from english speaking countries wants Civ3 to be localized, while us from non-english speaking languages wants the english version

I'm still praying for it to be an english version...thank God Civ2 was in english

Nobody should complain to Firaxis about localized anything. That's all up to the publisher.

No localized version
I think everyone who hates localised version can be very happy because Infogrames doesn't seem to translate the game until March 2002. On the german Infogrames forum I was told by the administrator that Europe will get the US version of the game on November 16th. She calles it a 'limited special edition' and it will feature a box with '3d effects' and the game and manual in english.

I'm a little bit confused. Will we get the US LE or standard edition?

Greetings,

Rince

Editions...
So we have:
US Limited edition (BTW, what is the difference with the standard edition?)
US Standard edition (in US and anywhere else, at the beginning?)
Localised Editions (anywhere else, after a while?)
Is it so?

There's even more!

She also calls the box a 'high value collectors box with lid'. And she calles the price of below 100 DM a 'price buster' (?), which I don't.

Must be some special special edition then because the US tin box certainly doens't have a lid to fold out.

The statement of the admin really sound as if she were on drugs. She's also goin crazy about the localisied version 'already being released in march 2002'. Wow!

Greetings,

Rince

If my guess I correct, the BTE (=biscuit tin edition, AKA LE)
won't perhaps be published outside USA.
As far as I can see, no retailer outside (until this
mostly UK) has told nothing of BTE in other countries,
so it's most likely that the stanard edition is going
to be the only option outside USA, if you don't
order a copy from USA (like I have done).

If I recall right, some instance said that BTE would
be available in Europe in spring 2002, but that's
not something to be trusted (IMO and because no-one
has confirmed that).

But anyway, we Europeans must hope that
Infogrames UK would publish any kind of information
related to Civ III BTE.

From what I've heard will there not be any Swedish version of the game. At least nothing that has been decided.

If there are no translation issues or different manuals to be printed, then why the delay of 2 weeks in distributing the game around the world after the US release? Bear in mind Infogrames is a French company, a nation fanatical about its unique and superior culture.

They can't get a big enough number of copies ready at the same time. They have to do it in waves.

Infogrames won't ship them over on a boat from one US factory, that would be commercial insanity. They are going to have to print them in Europe and distribute them here offcopies of the same gold discs Gramphos.

But AFAIK, it's mostly EA that has bundled
Swedish translations with games published by
them (like The Sims and Theme Hospital).
At least EA Sports' NHL games are the only
games that are translated into Finnish
(expect M$'s Windows games ).

But I wouldn't buy a Finnish version of Civ III,
because those translations would probably
be too humorous.

You see, you gave a good reason yourself.

First the gold disc is in the US making the US versions. Then the gold disc is shipped to Europe to make the other versions.

(Or they are working on a second gold disc with all bugs found by the advance copy holders removed)

Not really, unless you start doing it too often.

Gramphos, I didn't know that Infogrames has
such bad guidelines for distribution.
