Wonder movies.
I heard there will be no movies played when a Wonder is finished. Is that true? It kinda stinks. I liked those movies.

On a related note. Anyone know the name of the tune that plays when you discover the Great Library? I've been looking many a year for that particular piece but don't know the name.

I've read somewhere, that they don't have the movie, but there is some animation instead, which "does not disrupt the flow of the game".
Ah, yes... that was the civ3 official FAQ:
Quote:
Will there be Wonder movies in Civ III?
We have created a beautiful and fun world in Civ III and felt that the Wonder movies of the past would take you out of that world and interrupt the gameplay experience. In Civ III, building a Wonder triggers a unique reward screen that captures the flavor of the Wonder movies without disrupting the flow of your game.

I didn't particularly like the Civ2 wonder movies, but even good movies can be an interruption sometimes. I think Firaxis has something cool, something better in store for us.

I always like the music for Women's Suffrage in Civ 2, and the Manhattan Project.

Will Be Missed...
Why not simply have an option to click on/off the wonder movies so "the flow of the game is not interrupted"??? They could have the movies limited to only the GreatWonders as well. I liked many of those movies. Sometimes it was entertaining, other times it served as a refreshing break. For me... they will be missed.

The best music (IMO) for a Wonder was Adam Smith's Trading Company and The London Exchange.

I agree. but they are doing SOMETHING else to replace them, who's to say it won't be better?

That something else they are going to replace the movies with probably will be better, but there could still be no button to turn it on/off...

Well not having movies sucks. Definate negative.

They don't really break the flow of the game, its not a fast game anyways.

Movies/in-game cut scenes are used as a "reward" for players. "Here have some eye-candy and a break for a minute"

I really doubt that "reward screen" will be an equal replacement. I would have rather them dropped the palace/throne upgrade screen.

I would go with "Leonardo Workshop" music. It so cool!

BTW does anyone know where they get this melody? Is it original, or known composition?

My all-time favorite Civ movie was Alpha Centauri's "Hunter-Seeker Algorithm".

Yup! It's still cool!

If it comes down to they put a tiny bit more work into the AI and combat systems or playtested a bit more instead of doing movies, or without movies the game comes out oct 30 instead of dec 30, then im all for no movies. A couple were nice.... but its really one of thoes minor minor issues to me, id rather the work directed elsewhere

I imagine that one of the reasons for not putting them in the game was their distraction, for us and for them. It takes time and resources to develop those movies and have them be new and entertaining. Rather than devote the necessary time and resources to something that was fluff(albeit a nice addition) didn't seem as important as devleoping the game so that it could be done right. The wonder movies were not an integral part of the game and I guess that the designers decided to do away with them.

I am just glad that wonder movies are out. I never really liked them. It also means that they could improve other parts of civ more when they didn't have to make those boring video clips.

I prefered the 'Dream Twister' myself - freaked me out first time, still does, especially the last shot

Is that the "We must dissent" one? I used to leave the movies on in SMAC until I built that, then switched them off. That movie was outstanding.

The rest were nothing special; I always turned them off in Civ2.

My favourite musics were:
Bach's Cathedral - Bach - Toccata & Fugue
Adam Smith - Bach - Air (I think)

There is quite a lot of Bach music there. Sid is a big fan.

I sometimes kept them on, sometimes not.

The wonder movies are out?

Good. They were a definte waste of effort on firaxis' part. I watched a few of them when i bought the game, then turned em off. haven't turned em back on since.

Don't get me wrong, a good presentation is important. But not if it takes away from the real important parts. Specifcally AI, game balance, and strategy.

Now, consider how much time firaxis' seems to have spent on the leader heads.

Hmm, do you suppose they dropped the number of civs to 16 because they couldn't think up enough unique units, or because they couldn't afford to make those moronic heads for them all?

I'd rather they made the map, the thing i'll spend 99% of the time looking at, better, and left the diplomacy window just the plain dialog boxes.
