Civ 3 No Show Good For Sales
Posted by Big Gaz @ 9:02 a.m. NZDT

With the delay of Civilisation 3 here in New Zealand, PC strategy gamers have had to go elsewhere to get their fix. The main beneficiary seems to be Firefly Studios well recieved castle sim, Stronghold.
Retailers have reported good sales of Stronghold, with everyone agreeing that had Civilisation 3 made its release date, Stronghold would have sold next to none.

It seems delays are sometimes a blessing in disguise for retailers, especially with the huge influx of titles at Xmas time. Most titles don't get the coverage they deserve, and are overshadowed by the "big name" (and often long time delayed) titles. Which is a shame, because then gamers miss out on little hyped gems like Stronghold.

Make you wonder if the "delay" wasn't deliberate. Maybe they've got the game hidden in a warehouse somewhere and won't release it until it suits them.

I've also noticed a unusually large percentage of NZ'ers on Apolyton...

The delays have been a blessing in disguise for me, my exams end on the 6th (tommorow, yay!), getting Civ3 before then would have been detremental to my chances of passing...

As an aside, I've pre-ordered Civ3 from GameZone.... Until it arrives I'll be occupying my time with StarTopia, and upgrading my computer to ensure the Ultimate Civ3 experience....

Just thought I'd let you know that I visited different gaming stores in Melbourne and they all said the 16th was the earliest and also gave me prices on both LE and the standard. Didn't think LE was coming. Might look like it is but not counting my chickens yet.

I just rang Pulsar on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth and they said they were told last week to expect it on the 9th. After I told him that everywhere else was saying the 16th, he seemed a little bit more unsure, but said that he was only telling me what he'd been told. Fingers crossed.

I checked every store at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Melbourne and the earliest they gave me was the 16th with others saying the 19th. One store had a full Window display of Civ 3 boxes and posters "Coming Soon" labelled. I had to catch my breath as I when I saw the display I hadn't seen the "Coming Soon" sign yet and thought it was in store already. Damn it!!!!!!

Quay Computers in Wellington told me the 12th today.
I tried buying it while in Sydney yesterday, and was told the 19th by Harvey Norman and EB, so was very surprised to get back here and find someone saying the 12th. We shall see.

Hey, did any Kiwis get the game today? (monday the 12th).

Gamesman didn't get it, seems wednesday or thursday there. EB, say that they will have it tuesday (tomorrow). That seems to be the best bet (At least I hope it is).

It's arrived! Wednesday 14th November 2001. A new historic event. We love the king day celebrated in New Zealand!

The Aussies bet us by a day though! Not again! Why do they beat us at everything?

Also, Empire Earth is due on Friday.

Anyway, must go get the game. Haven't even had a shower yet but never mind.

Yep, Johnsonville EB (Wgtn) got me my copy an hour ago.

Nice!

First game was a total washout, though...

False alarm! It only arrived in the North Island today. It won't be in Christchurch until tomorrow.

However, in the meantime, I've just upgraded my RAM to 256MB. It's extremely cheap at the moment.

Does having extra RAM help for this game?

Well, it's now in my hot little hands, and I'm going to install it soon. Great about it being Canterbury holidays what with Empire Earth coming out tomorrow as well. Of course, I'm only doing a little part-time work now, so just about every day is a holiday for me.
