Resources tend to bunch up?
I've noticed that certain resources tend to bunch up on the map, particularly luxury items. There will be 4-6 units of these resources within a 5 square radius. Generally there are a few of these luxury patches on a map, but my question is if anyone else has seen this phenomenon.

Yes, in a 3x2 area, I saw 5 spices. Nice place to build a second city.

Yeah, luxury resources seem to almost always bunch together. Handy, you can trade the excess away.

Strategic sorta do, but to a much lesser extent. It's not totally uncommon to see 3-4 iron together, or 2-3 horses for example (haven't got to the higher resources, except saltpeter which I saw exactly one of)

On the other hand they do come singly too, unlike luxuries, and it's a terrible sight to have your only source of iron dry up. I spent 1000 years wondering where I was gonna get more... there were 4 squares of it in a roman city nearby, but without Iron I'd never have taken it. Spearmen to defend, Horsemen to attack against Roman Legionnaires?! No thank you! Fortunately, after about 1000 years they converted to my culture.

Is it just me or do the Romans always seem to be culturally weak?

This has always been the case since I've been playing the game, I'm pretty sure it's intentional, as it tends to encourage "power brokering" of valuable resources and also seems to increase "hot zones" where a couple of civs are always fighting over a given resource.

I never saw a hole bunch of gold or gems resources together, so i figure it's just the luxury resources that don't require mining...

Yes, so you want to catch the hotspots.

Remember that new resources tend to be found in those area's too. They're important because eventually the resources die out. Be careful with overusing coal (for railroads) especially, I go through it like water.

Um, gold isn't a luxury resource, just a bonus. I seem to recall gems is a luxury, but you're right it doesn't bunch as much. It still seems to congregate in certain areas of the map. Just not the massive clumps.
