my favorites...

1. quake(quakeworld, aka qw, dm/ffa/ctf especially) - i still play this daily, and i am obessed with it. it's the best multiplayer first person shooter out there. if you think otherwise you are wrong. the single player sucks though.

2. doom1/doom2(co-op especially) - i play this a few times a month still. the dm doesn't compare to qw but it has excellent single player comparable to serious sam but better imo. the co-op is great, and i play that the most. speed running single players levels is also very cool.

3. civ1 - don't play it much anymore, but it's still my favorite civ by far. it was the only civ game that was revolutionary.

4. simcity1 - again, i don't play it anymore but it was the only simcity that was revolutionary.

5. dues ex - great single player fps/rpg type of game. probably the best single player since doom(if a different style). it doesn't have much replay value or anything like co-op/speed runs/etc so i don't play it much anymore. i will probably go through it again on higher difficulty someday.

6. carmeggedon - great single player mayhem. lost the cd, so i can't play it anymore. nice action/racing style.

7. quake2/quake3/civ2/civ3/simcity2000/simcity3000 - i really enjoyed each but none really managed to hold my interest. they are just rehash with updated gfx. each successive sequal bores me more.

i have also played everquest, but a game that takes JUST time and not skill is a big turn off to me.

CivII:ToT introduced me to a whole new world of TBS.

But actually, M.A.X. is one of the first TBS games I enjoyed on the PC (I got it for $10, as it had already been out for a couple years when I found it).

Deus Ex got me inspired to play multiplayer FPS games. The MP patch had already been released by the time I bought DeX, so as soon as I had finished the campaign, I gave the multiplayer a try. And I was hooked! I went out and got Quake III Arena and the Team Arena expansion right after that; something I would have never done if it weren't for my MP FPS introduction with Deus Ex.

But before even these, the two games that REALLY started my PC gaming career were SimCity (the reason I was interested in getting a PC in the first place) and X-Wing. These games, along with a few others, are the ones that began my epic journey of computer recreation.

Since that era in my life (the era I like to call the 'Post Nintendo Renaissance'), I have added a multitude of strategy, shooter, adventure, sim, flight, etc. games to my collection.

But most notable are a couple of games. One being Tribes 2.

Yeah, this game has its share of technical problems. But for some reason, I just love this FPS multiplayer game above all the other ones I have. Its scripting language and customizability, the vehicles, the weapon types, and the fact that it is more difficult to be killed with one hit of a rail-gun or a BFG weapon really appeals to me.

Also of note is Soul Reaver 1. This game (though I first played it on someone else's Dreamcast, and later purchased the PC version) really opened up the possibilities of computer games. Before this, I hadn't played any other FPS games besides well known Nintendo titles such as the Mario games, Zelda games, and Banjo Kazooie. Soul Reaver opened my eyes to what 3d games really could be. (and all that blood and gore was rather entertaining too!)

Homeworld is another that really immersed me in its story, gameplay, and very superb 3d graphics. Besides also Age of Empires, Homeworld is the game that convinced me to keep playing RTS games.

Well, I could go on with all of my favorite games... but I won't.

Or maybe I should?

Nah- but I won't...

But..

No..

Oh, that was quite a game... I remember my friend and I bought it many years ago, quite amazing at the time.

After playing EU2, I'm going to have to add that to my list, wonderful game. The only other game that I have ever played which was as adictive and fun was Deus Ex - I played that game non stop from when I woke up to when I went to sleep at night for a full week untill I finished it. I often do the same with EU2, but it has such replayability that when I finish a game I can just start a new one .

A game I always forget to mention but deserves a lot of praise IMO is Alien Legacy. While it has only limited replay value its one game whose story kept me gripped from start to finish.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe - £10 - A fantastic game, by anyone's standards.
Starcraft - £10 - Once again, a good, fun game.
X-COM Collection - you've guessed it, £10 - Brilliant

Civ I, just because it was a mind-expanding first. closely followed by CivII and MOO I.

The worst was Destiny, what a Turkey.

I'd have to say Bard's Tale for the Commodore 64. I remember taking graph paper and mapping out the dungeons. God, what an excellent game it was!

Yeah, I remember doing that too, although I started with Bard's Tale III. I'd have to add to that title the following: Wasteland, Dragon Wars, Pirates, Civ I, Might & Magic I - III, and my favorite: Forgotten Realms Gold Box series from SSI (Pools of Radience, etc.)

Elite and especially Exile were my favourite games on the old BBC micro, exile had the best physics engine in 2d.. shame my beeb is broken.

On the Pc Civ3 looks like my best, XCom:apocalypse was great (more xcom like games coming from the gollops company) alloying you control over every aspect of a millitary anti alien organisation - even having industrial politics and fights with the police and crime gangs.. the music was quite creepy too.
Master of orion 2 was great, but old now (moo3 could be excellent), Botf had interesting stuff but didn't quite do it for me for long enough. Maybe if it had the startrek characters like 7of 9 in it it would be better.

Quake1 was amazing, q2 had great multiplayer with catch the flag team matches.. who says fps gasmes dpont have strategy?
Now counterstrike and half life are the best(haven't tried deus ex yet)

I rate Baldurs gate2 and 1 as some of the best, they have an astounding amount of content - its good its prescripted mostly as well, so you get proper quests and storylines as well as voiceovers.
Planescape Torment is one of my top favourites - the spell effects were great, but the story and atmosphere and gfx were the best. The puzzles and strategy were great too.

Games that look good are that Voyager:startrek FPS quake3 game.

Oh I forgot some other greats, Gta1 and maybe 2 (its very addictive) probably no.3 too (out in 2months)

Discworld 1 and 2 were great point and click adventures, though 1 was nearly impossible at the time.

Command and conquer and especially Red alert1 were great, tiberium sun sucked a bit though - but it had a great voxel 3dish engine - nearly.

Railroad Tycoon2 is good as well, for all those people wanting to rule the world with a train company, and buying out the other companies.

Bioforge was a great old game too.. fully 3d characters before anyone else.

I guess I can't be that fussy with games
Civ3 is probably the best though, if not Civ2 :Test of time is, although they aren't at all perfect.

The reason I bought my first PC were adventures like Space quest (I still like the story of SQ2) and Kings quest.
Civ I got me really hooked to PC-gaming (it cost me my social life and some exams). I find Civ 2 a more balanced game though and I'm preferring that now to Civ 1 and 3.
Diablo is another classic that kept me playing for hours. It made me run to the shop to buy Diablo 2 and I like that even better. USAF is a great game in terms of playability and graphics.
I loved Red Alert, but AOK is my favorite in the RTS genre now (with Empire Earth as a great contender).
BTW has anyone succeeded in running MOO2 on a XP-machine?

Without a doubt, the Diablo 2 Expansion Pack (Lord of Destruction). That thing has sucked waaay too many hours out of my studies . I'd vote for the original, but I , er, can't say I bought it...

SMAC/X is a close second.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe has stayed on my hard drive for a long time, and I still play it. Also Rollercoaster tycoon and Railroad tycoon 2 have sucked many hours away from me.

have a demon lord in the special slot, and have a mage cast MIBL, and another cast FLAN, to recover the damage they'll do to your monk in the first slot.

that encounter gave the most experience of anywhere in the game. I used it to get absurd experience levels for my characters. it was on level 3 of the tower. level 2 was shielded. couldn't PHDO on the level, or APAR in or out. but I could APAR from level 1 to level 3, repeating those same 396 berzerkers over and over.

Here's my list:

1. Civ III - Don't need any comments
2. Civ - The first one, it got more gameplay than Civ II
3. The Settlers II - The best Settlers game I have ever bought (Haven't bought S4, because it is in DANISH )
4. The Settlers - The first one again, rts can't get much better
5. RollerCoaster Tycoon - including all addons, the game is simply amazing, too bad it doesn't work with DX8
6. Boulder Dash games - The ones to the Amiga, there exists that many of them so I can't deside which one deserves to be as number one, ok I didn't buy all of them, but many of them

The best computer game PURCHASE you say? I'll just say that I've played a lot of games through the years and quite a lot were purchases. Here's some of them

Mr Wimpy C64 (cheap Burgertime clone, hey, it was the first game I had. What can i say! )
Last Ninja 1 C64
Last Ninja 2 C64
Mega Apolcalypse C64 (blowing up planets with music and speech! In the background yeah!)
Alien Legacy PC (Joe Ybarra's keeps it interesting till the end)
Time and Magick trilogy Amiga (trilogy of the famous level9 text adventure series)
Bards Tale 2 Amiga
Sword of Aragon Amiga
Druid 2 Amiga
Dungeon Master Amiga (reason to get 512 Kb upgrade)
Laser Squad Amiga (X-com/UFO's predecessor)
Civ1 (of course!) PC
Civ2 + addons PC
Civ: ToT (budget title) PC
Wasteland PC
Neuromancer PC (Cyberpunk RPG/adventure)
Ultima 6 PC (it's a classic Ultima, what can i say)
Savage Empire PC (used the U6 engine, trivia note: Warren Spector (Deus Ex fame) appears in this game as one of the protagonists btw)
Martian Dreams PC (once again U6 engine brilliant steampunk story with famous characters from the 19th century)
Ultima 7 + Serpent Isle (last of the great Ultima's, things went quickly downhill after this
Wing Commander 1+2+data disks (after I saw Wing Commander I knew the writing was on the wall for the Amiga. I enjoyed 1 and 2 for the cartoony graphics, never liked WC3 because of that)
Strike Commander + data (fly as a mercenary with a F16 falcon, trying to scrounge up cash by flying missions to keep your planes in the air. Why origin never did a sequel for this is a mystery)
Entrepreneur+data (Bought this business game after having seen how Brad Wardell kept answering questions/problems about it on usenet. Sadly games have taken a backseat to windows blinds at the moment) Still, the support should serve as an example to all...
System Shock 1 and 2
Incubation (Blue Byte's unsung successor to X-com/UFO)
Links GS (the real McCoy, no wimpy Sid Golf for me!)
Resident Evil 1,2,3 (I like blasting zombies, what can i say! )

There's more (C64, Amiga, PC) but that's what I can remember from the top of my head now.

EU!

Didn't buy EU2(Beta tester), so I guess it doesn't count.

Starcraft & Broodwar.

RA2.

Dunno why I fall for those two RTS', gameplay isn't THAT good, but awesome storyline in Starcraft, and RA2 was just pure fun bashing commie ass/yankee ass.

Civ2, Fallout, Planescape:Torment.

I would have said EU2, but my game with England for what ever reason doesn't work anymore and crashes to desktop. And I was in 1734 too .

The worst purchase by far was the $54.95 I paid for EU.
