The German leader, Bismarck, has some great lines. He talks about you playing a joke on him when your offer in trade is insufficient; threatens you with dire cinsequences if you don't pay him tribute (even when you have more soldiers in his territory than he has citizens left; and remarks about reasonable people rising above the rough world while he breaks treaties and sneak attacks everyone near him. As to looks, Shaka's look reflect a very negative stereotype in medieval and industrial times, and Cleo does indeed look like Bo Peep. I also like "Saint" Joan, a cute way to handle her legend. Obviously, the FirAxis people had fun with this.

This is why France has to go in my games at the end of industrial age by a tank or panzer rush. She looks lovely in the first 3 ages, but I don't want to see her in the modern era.

I know nobody likes the Iriquois in Civ3 - but ancient Hiawatha reminds me to the days I played Colonization. It's nice to see the same Iriquois leader back.

hey, you gotta admit caesars sneer is vicious. when abe smiles he looks like he's sucking on a lemon quarter or something else extremely sour (like bi-partisan politics or the bastardization of the GOP ). queen elizabeth looks like a snotty old bit ch, alexander looks too pale to be Greek (he looks like that british actor in I Claudius actually), Tokugawa is hideous, Mao looks like a weasel (not the animal, but a politician), Bismarck looks too old, Shaka has Jay Leno's chin, montezuma looks like that mexican fellow on the tonight show, Cleopatra reminds me of a short tempered grade school teacher, Xerxes and Hammurabi look very accurate, cept in modern times, Hammurabi resembles a hippie (i see a fun mod set in the 1960s with this). Hiawatha is basically caesar with an american indian face, joan d'arc...pitiful, pitiful, I prefer to stare at DeGaulle's huge schnoz than her ugly bald head, and catherine the great is a cow. I think that's all of them. Caesar looks by far the most ruthless which is why I like playing as the romans.

Caesars sneer can go perfectly in a pinstripe suit with a tommygun at his hip though you know what I mean?
as for queen elizabeth, she's an uppity *****!

I think Ceasar looks like a whimp. Every time I see him he is friendly and every time his civ is about the weakest of all (or it certainly seems that way. It might have to do with the way he looks like.)

He is just too nice. He doesn't look like a real conqueror. I ussually start to whipe the Romans out, just because Ceasar looks like a leader with no political skills. With him out, I get the feeling the weak are destroyed and we can really start the game.

BTW: I sometimes get those feelings with different leaders as well, but Ceasar is the most obvious example.

Despite all the Cold War propaganda, he wasn't the kind of leader Stalin was. He meant well for the Chinese people and felt communism was the only way to bring together an Empire in decline. I think in retrospect, taking into account the disasters that were cultural revolution and the great leap forward, Communism may have been the best thing that have happened to China. It stabilized the country and made it possible for it to develop economically and I'm very very impressed with its Economic growth in the last 20 years.

China, hopefully, should be restored as one of the great world powers this century. As a Chinese, there is part of me would very much want to see that happen.

I sincerely hope the emerging middle class will inititate change that will turn China into a strong Democratic Republic, because if it can change to that form of government, with its freedoms, both personal and economic, China's economic potential is limitless and could simply dwarf America's. A 50 Trillion dollar GDP ? that's very likely and then it will truly be the central country of the human race.

I think in the next millenia, the greatest test of humanity would be to put aside cultural and racial differences and work together as a group, whether it happens via the United Nations, or through the sheer power and influence of great powers like the United States or China or perhaps a consortium or major world blocs.. If that doesn't happen we will have a very rough road ahead as a race.

Asian pride!
ARE YOU SMOKING CRACK? Moa killed between 35-50 million of his own people in numerous purges? I don't what history book you have read, perhaps his little Red Book?

I agree with you, China has great potential, but it has severe problems as well. Its government is the most serious one. Can it ever out do the US, doubtful. Reason: Too many people. Its social needs will always be a drain on its economy.

Which takes me into a game idea: Nations like India and China should get a bonus in building a settler. It should only cost them 1 person from its building city.

Large population don't need to be a problem. If you can manage it effectively, the money that goes to social problems is limited. It is all bout percentages. Something like: If 70% of the population is employed and earns x amount of dollars, we can support the rest for x amount of dollars through taxes.

Caesar looks like a merchant from the Italian Renaissance in the middle ages, a mild mannered reporter for a metropolitan newspaper in Industrial and a used car salesman in modern.

Alexander looks like a kid who threw on adult clothes regardless of the era. In modern era he looks like he's the son of the CEO of a computer software conglomerate and he threw on his father's suit and glasses.

Bismarck looks like a dwarven miner (minus the beard) in ancient, a clown in medieval, but in Industrial and Modern he starts to look like the brilliant statesman he was.

Cathy is way too old. Civ III is the only time I've seen an elderly rendition of her.

Cleo spends far too much time in the solarium methinks.

Gandhi looks like the peanut of a holy man he was right through the game, but I like the glasses and hat he wears in the Industrial age.

Hammurabi looks far too evil. This is supposed to be the man who drafted code of law that shaped most law codes we use today.

Hiawatha looks like he is from a Disney movie (especially when he is smiling)

Joan doesn't look too bad before modern era, but damn, why did she have to go bald?

Lizzy looks too snooty. And in the modern era she looks more like the Queen's secretary than the queen herself.

Tokugawa looks like the CEO of a major Japanese electronics conglomerate in modern era.

Xerxes looks like a broadway musical star in Industrial and an ageing rock-star in modern.

Shaka has such a funny hat (if you can call it that). Makes him look like a wuss (despite the fact that he is quite the opposite. In the Industrial era, like Xerxes he looks like the star of a broadway musical. In modern era, he looks like a South African cricket commentator.

Here's some more...

Industrial Cleopatra has a five o'clock shadow.

Joan of Arc looks like the girl from Blondie. "Heart of Glass" singing group.

Otto von Bismarck in his floppy medeival hat looks like Jed Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies.

Observations courtesy of my girlfriend when she got to see the leaders for the first time.

i LOVE abe in the ancient era. he's such a tough guy with his tooth necklace or whatever. i think joan in the modern era is awesome too, very punk rock. i also like her in the ancient - the horned helmet is such a bold fashion statement. i like elizabeth's goth look, too. spooky. shaka's hat never fails to crack me up, and hiawatha's bow tie! and personally, i think caesar is pretty hot. but they're all pretty hilarious at some point in the game.

I don't know where this particular version of Civ3 came from, but here are the details:

It has a Chinese and English version bundled.

The Chinese civilization is Militaristic and Industrious, not Sicentific and Industrious.

The Chinese leader is not Mao Tse Tung or even (more correctly) Mao Zedong.

The Chinese leader is LiShiMin (3rd tone, 4th tone, 2nd tone), the founder of the Tang dynasty who is better known by his other name Taizong.

The package included the manual (in simplified Mandarin) and the CDROM (proper installation, too - not burned). The whole thing cost me 49 yuan, or roughly 6 dollars USD.

I am well aware that Civ3 is not available for retail in Chinese stores yet. I have no idea where this particular one came from. It looks quite kosher, what with the wrapping being convincing and all the spelling correct, so I don't think it's pirated. I can only assume this one was smuggled in from Taiwan. If so, this would also explain the change of Chinese leader - many younger Taiwanese would probably refuse to play any computer game that featured Mao as the representative of the Chinese people.

By the way, LiShiMin looks really quite impressive in this game. I shall post up screenshots when I get them done.

Yes, please do post screenshots! Is his head actually animated?! Surely it's not Firaxis-made...?

Or are you confused, and Li Shimin is just using the Mao head?

Some impressions I have of the various pics.

Angry Catherine, any era - "Stand closer dearie, I can't quite see you".

Medieval Shaka looks like a circus clown.

Angry Shaka, any era - "Who farted?"

Angry Ghandi, any era - "Eww, that stinks"

Smiling Julius, modern era - Looks like a used car salesman who had a liquid lunch or just farted.

Angry Julius, any ear - Looks like he's just been told a really awful joke.

Smiling Bismark, any era - Looks constipated.

Smiling Mao, any era - looks stoned.

Joan, all eras - The hair dye she used in medieval era to get red hair in industrial era made all of it fall out in modern era.

I think anyone in the mideval era is ridiculous with those stupid hats.

But Chemo-Joan and Mao with his evil red eyes are pretty funny too.

And is it just me, or does Alexander look like he dead?
