Favorite Civilizations
For whatever reason, personal or gameplay, we all have one civilization we feel particularly attached to.

This is a poll to figure out which Civ, posters like the most

There is not too much different between the civs. However, I love kicking other civ's asses with my Chinese riders. So I would go for China.

I'll take German Panzers over Chinese Riders anyday!!!

The Poles once tried something like that with horseback riders too!

From an objective point of view, I believe that the Persians are the best civ to play with, here's why:

1) Their special unit the Immortal (4/2/1), is attainable EXTREMELY early in the game, it requires Ironworking, which you can research very quickly. It is the earliest unit in the game to have 4 attack. Iroquois' Mounted Warrior is the most effective, but their civ-specific qualities arent the greatest.

2) Persians are industrious (probably the best quality), and scientific (3rd best in my opinion).

And that's why I believe they are the best civ in the game.
Argue this point if you want.

Dude. Egyptians. Industrious and religious. Do you realize that with religious a cathedral costs less than a library or a marketplace? Talk about culture... And industrious is tasty for us weirdos who like to irrigate/mine/railroad every single tile.

Maybe Religious and Commercial? (descendants of the Phoenicians, the original mercantile power long before the Greeks knew how to spell trireme)

...and perhaps sharing the War Elephant special unit with the Indians?

Rome forever!

Millitaristic + Comercial, the perfect combo to carve out a huge empire and hold onto it for the entire game.

I eat all religious and scientific civs for lunch. In fact, it seems that every game begins with a side order of greace...

French,

For the early game worker speed and the late game bonus to commerce and industry. Getting around 150 production from a single city is too nice.

I agree, French rule. Sure, their civ specific unit ain't the best, but having a city that loses a little less to corruption(the commercial aspect), gets more commerce from squares(commerce also), gets that added shield bonus (industrious) and can mine, irrigate and railroad every tile from here to Istanbul is not bad, IMHO.

Course, I also like the Persians. Building cheap libraries, universities, etc is very nice. Especially if you are going for a technollogically advanced civ.

Bah, industrious is over rated. You get what?
+1 extra production in a city of size 7-12
+2 in a city of 13+
x2 worker rate

So with a 20 city empire, and pretending that you won't lose most of those extra sheilds to corruption anyway, you get the equivilent of one extra city.

A millitant civ on the other hand doesn't need workers who are twice as fast, because his empire is full of the displaced souls from empires long dead. Slavery is alive and well in Rome my friends, even launching occasional raids on overseas empires just to burn their citys down and bring home some more slave labor.

Further, thanks to the 4-5 great leaders acheived in each game I am getting 3-4 wonders of the world built instantly and in any city I desire. The sheilds saved on wonders is stagering, and in my opinion easily blows away the largely wasted extra production from industrious.

The worker rate is what makes industrious so awesome.

Greeks...

1/3 hoplite, available turn 1, no iron required, easy to fend off the "other, less significant" civilizations, great for choke points and for claiming resources until you can build cities there. They won't trigger a golden age until another civ attacks you, so the timing can be fantastic...

Commercial (lower corruption, marketplaces, bank costs)
Scientific (up to 4 free techs, lower library, university, etc. costs)

I would bet that the Greeks, if set up properly, can hold their own against ANY empire at ANY level through the rest of the game...

The only problem is that they tend to have a slow early offensive...

Romans

Start adjecent to the greeks, a civ begging to be steamrollered.

3/3/1 legions, available less than 64 turns into the game. Same defensive ability of the so-called great hoplites, and three times the offensive ability.

Cheap barracks and walls, even conqured cities can be spitting out veteran units in no time at all.

So greeks get cheap libraries and universities do they? Good luck staying alive long enough to get universities while you have a competent roman player actively trying to crush you.
