GREAT NEWS : no more number of city limit
I’ve just found how to get rid of that 255 city limit !
It needs some more testing but I’m 100% sure it is possible and 95% sure it should work just fine.
I’ll keep you informed … If some of you want to beta-test please tell me.
It should be done by the end of next week for MGE.
(No schedule for ToT, it’s some painful work to find the right number to change)

Sure!!!!! I'll try it. This is great news for the CIV2 community in the whole, and ICS'ers.

Thanks, I’ve already had little army of beta-tester who sent messages to my mail address.
Just to make it clear :
- it works for me but, it needs more testing
- and I need to clean the mess I’ve created with the way I altered the file (changed 100 values, when 1 was required, but I didn’t know which needed to be changed).
- I want it to be accompanied with a break of the number of units limit.

So, some more patience please (I’ve got a real life and a real job, too), and of course that none of the beta-tester should diffuse the version they will receive. If everything goes fine it shall be in the Apolyton forum by the end of February.
Sorry for putting so much excitement before the release of the product, but yesterday, I was quite excited myself.

Great work Julius!
but be careful,
if i'm right (and i pray to be wrong, believe me ) your modification could cause problems in saved games (if not in the game itself):
in the worse case you'll get a broken save game,
in the most probable case you'll get problems with units built in cities > 255
in another case you'll raise no problem ( )

i'm interested in understand what happens when you build a new unit in the 256th city, it is owned by that city or it appears to be NONE?.

Greetings,
Angelo

Thanks to all for testing the new patch. But I am afraid you're going to be as disappointed as me.

I've found the value in the civ2.exe program for the 255 cities and you can build more. But there's 2 problems :
1) if you enter the 256th or 257th city after building it (seems to be either one), then the game crashes.
2) you can build up to 279 cities easily but after building the 280th, the cities name color changes and the 281th just crashes it all.

I've also found the values for the number of units, and you can also overstep it. (1948 for one player, 2048 overall).
But there's one little problem :
- after the 2050th unit the game crashes once again.

So, I've done a great job of finding the values in the prog but they don't seem to be taken off too lightly. Maybe that it will work better on your computer, but I have almost no hopes ... Mine is a 450Mhz Celeron with 192 MB, with both W95 and NT 4.0, so ...
But please keep me all informed on the results. One never knows ...

Sorry for the meaningless excitement. I did not lie as you will see : you can build more. But it's just that it doesn't work well. Dreaming is good and reality hurts.

I haven't tried this. Might be interesting to know, although the outcome of my modification unfortunately look already bleak enough.
