ah, i found the largest herd
Started a game on Regent, Standard map as Greece. Within 5 squares of Athens I have no less than eight (8) ivory resources. Could someone calulate the number of elephants that might be found in such a herd?

I can just guess how many strategic resources I'll have. Nada.

Soren, I can hear you laughing.

lol.

Yes, but you'll be able to trade / sell most of that ivory for what you can't find around you (not to bludgeon you with obvious facts...).

I do find the clustering of some resources interesting, though. Sometimes I find it makes certain things that I think ought to be more common around the globe seem very rare -- dyes, for instance. In some cases, it makes logical sense, but in others, it's just frustrating. Still, it mandates trade and emphasizes using the excellent and now necessary diplomacy model, so I don't mind too much -- except when the AI is a pain and and won't trade me what I want...

Oh, and sorry, but I have absolutely no idea how many elephants would be in that herd.
