Anyone has a theory on Planting Spies?
I tried planting a spy in the Zulu capital and failed. I repeated again and again on the same turn and none were successful.
What determines the success rate of planting a spy? If the attempt fails, should I wait a few more turns for their "extra surveillence" to wear off before trying again?

Normally the odds of planting a spy are 50%, according to the Strategy Guide. Repeated attempts on the same turn are less likely to suceed, but I don't know by what percentages. The failure is noticed by the AI being targeted, too. Perhaps a few gifts and a short wait are the best idea, before trying again to insert a spy. Once the spy is planted, make sure you have a big pile of gold to take along to finance the spy's missions. They are all quite pricey.

Good to see you Solo. Yes, the odds are lower for repeated attempts in same turn. Wait before trying again. Note failures can precipitate war. The odds on that outcome seem to go up with each failure. Too few games to be sure, but that's my impression.

I think that repetative attemtps in same turn always fail.
Try planting in next, or some other turn.

Does anyone else plant spies with another civ, just to see what units that civ controls??

The reason I want to plant spies is so that I can determine how many troops the AI has. That's good to know in a war. It's not expensive to plant a spy and I don't have to know how many troops the AI has in each city (I can always estimate from the total troop strength).
Another question. Does size and power of the civ affect the success rate of planting spies? What if the civ has not discovered espionage yet or does not have an Intelligence Agency yet?

I don't think power and size matter, it's just a 50/50 chance like the strategy guide says. In one game I failed planting a spy with a small civ, but later on the same turn, suceeded in planting one with the most dominant civ in the game.

Good to see you here, too, Blaupanzer!

Yes, but trying to plant spy again in that same civ in same turn will always fail.
