Back to the Basics
In my humble opinion, I think it's more appropriate to simply call civ3 "Civilization III", not "Sid Meier's Civilization III".

This is because no games are made by one person nowadays. I don't recall any other game that includes designer's name in the title, at least not emphasized.

True, though Sid Meier's name is good for marketing and tells me I'll be getting a quality game.

Its probably that way because people associate "Sid Meier" with "greatness." Sort of a name recognition thing.

TF: I gotta admit, it's weird seeing your name here on Apolyton. I have to agree with you on the title thing, tho'. The game is made by a whole team of designers, not just Sid. But I guess they're just following tradition...

Sid call himself Creative Design Director (or some such), and I get the idea of a determined man standing over a team of people getting things done his way. So the addition of Sid's name seems right and proper to me.

i get the idea of a guy making all final decisions but leaving the design up to his team so he can go play with dinosaurs and golf games

Well, you're certainly a 100% newbie.

Perhaps you should read this article about Sid:
GameSpot

But shortly in a nusthell:
Sid Meier is one of the founders of Firaxis and
one of the living legends in the game industry.
Some games made by Firaxis are Antientam and
Gettysburg. He has earlier worked at MicroProse,
where he has made many classic PC games like
Pirates, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, CivNet and many others.

You newer know; there's all kind of wierd
persons here that can ask utterly stupid questions.
But I responded to his question just to make sure,
if he really doesn't know anything about Sid.

And hey, my postings account grove.

Pop quiz:

What was the last game Sid Meier released that did not have his name in the title?

Pirates? Anyway it would be dumb NOT to add his name to the title as it is well known and probably increases sales quite a bit.

In theory, this is correct. BUT like others have said this is a business. They have to try for name recognition just like in the movies to sell more product because after all they're in it to make cash. For example, you don't see TERMINATOR 2 you see ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER in TERMINATOR 2 because they know more people will go see the movie if they attach the big name to the title. It's all marketing. TERMINATOR 2 makes cash but SCHWARZENEGGER in TERMINATOR 2 makes big time CASH.

So...although it would be nice to have everybody's name on the box or just call it Civilization 3 so no one gets singled out I understand why this is done and I don't have a major problem with it.

Who? I honestly have never heard of this person. Isn't he the lead singer from that 70s band ACE?

I think he's the guy who did Quake (just a theory).
I have never heard of him either.

Sorry, but you are incorrect; that was "Sid Meier's Pirates". The box art:
