going!
Going right now. Not much to do but build a settler or two , so I'll be able to play and post within the hour.

The Reign of xsck
Excelsior is dead, and the tribe has descended into chaos! Fortunately, within scarcely a year of his passing, the rumor of his illegitimate heir is proven to be true. Excelsior had a son.

Unfortunately, Excelsior's Heir had such a long name, and Excelsior was so hard to spell to begin with, that he setback Russian literacy by centuries in abolishing all vowels; starting with his own name, which would now forever be: xsck.

Herein lies his reign:

3000 BC
======
My father wanted to build Excelsior into a mighty city, but I would see Russia have numerous mighty cities, all over the globe! I have ordered the work crew to begin a road North, heading towards a possible new settlement location.

2950-2850 BC
==========
Both scout companies have sent word that their are numerous mountains and expanses of frozen waste, but no resources of note. I have ordered them to continue exploring the coast, in hope that there may yet be more to our land.

2800 BC
======
Our fair city has finally completed a system of granaries, which will allow us to send more food out with future settlers. Even now I have sent the call to all would-be pioneers, that we are going to found another city, and all who are able-bodied are guaranteed land. Mindful of our quickened growth, I order the Malgyar warriors to garrison the city in case of riot.

2750-2630 BC
==========
Both scouting companies have sent their latest report. It is beyond a doubt that we are alone in this land, and that there is no way to leave it on foot. I have ordered West company home, but East garrison will remain in the frigid Northeast to watch for barbarian incursion.

2590-2510 BC
==========
The work crew nears completion of the Via Russia roadway, and West company is ordered to range Mount Excelsior in case of barbarian uprising to the Northwest.

2470 BC
======
Our shamans have finally found a use for that strange grey ore. They call it Iron, and it could do many things for us. Alas, it's usefullness is exceeded only by it's rarity: West company confirms that neither they nor East company found Iron in any abundance anywhere in the Realm.

We MUST find a way to cross the sea, we MUST have this Iron. I order the shamans to work on their letters, in the hope that we might be able to craft better maps for navigating the treachorous waters.

2430 BC
======
Enough pioneers have gathered that I send them forth. Just in time, for Via Russia is now complete. I order the work crew to continue making paths through outlying forest near our new intended settlement. I also continue to send the call out for pioneers, for a proposed second city further north.

2390 BC
======
Our settlers have arrived, and breaking my long vow of abstinence, I use a blasphemous long-winded vowel... and name our new village "Alpha". The people are so enamored of my rule that artisans from all across the countryside gather to celebrate our expansion. They begin work on a great palace, starting with a large ceremonial chamber with comfy cushions.

2350-2240 BC
==========
Excelsior and Alpha continue to flourish.

2190-2150 BC
==========
West company reports a Barbarian tribe headed our way! I order them to take shelter and stay out of site, and the Malygar warriors begin marching North. Alpha changes their efforts to build new spearmen companies.

2110 BC
======
Our second group of pioneers has gathered in Excelsior, and with the Malygar heading off the barbarians they begin their long journey.

2070-1900 BC
==========
Our first victory in the field! The Malygar warriors have routed our would-be-invaders, and the barbarians are no more. The journey of our pioneers is nearly complete, but my health is failing and I wonder if I will live to see their arrival.

1870 BC
======
Not a day too soon, I have received word that the settlers arrived and founded our third town, "Beta", per my instructions. With faithful Malygar warriors to the north, and spearmen companies in training in the south, I know this land will be ours... and at last I can die in peace.

Turn Complete
I ran over a few turns, but I had to get in another city! We're totally hosed for iron.

Here is the state of the world, 1870 BC:

It really stinks that we don't have any iron. I thought there must surely be some in those mountains! My plan was to find the iron fast and then grab it so that no matter if the AI shows up on our shores tomorrow, we'll have the iron. The AI is agressive with those galley+settler+warrior combos.

I agree. Map Making is the top priority now. We need to find the AIs before they get too far ahead of us. For all we know, they are all lumped together on some other continent trading techs for all they're worth. We need to find them before we get an age or two behind.

Anyway, good work on cranking out those settlers. Did xsck leave an heir?

A force to be reckoned with, Czar Lurking!
Somewhere around 1842BC in a barbarian town located in a huge cave north of the Russian civilization and young brute was born. His mother named him Lurking, and by the time he could rip his own meat off a wild bear, he was plotting the overthrow of the Russian colaborative government. When Lurking was 10 years old, he was a large brute. He marched into the Russian capital of Excelsior with a determined look on his face, and young Russian blood dripping from his blade. With the help of some disenchanted young Russian cohorts he was KING by the age of 12.

Lurking's reign started in 1830BC and the events therein are detailed here:

1830BC - Lurking is getting his house in order, cleaning out the filth left by the old Czar is messy business.

1790BC - Lurking receives a runner from the town of Beta. He reports that some of Lurking's old barbarian tribemates seem to be looking for him. Lurking takes note of the situation but does nothing. A Russian scout sends word that he is about to be attacked...

1700BC - Barbarians begin chasing other scout. A russian worker continues to work on the road conecting all the Russian cites.

1675BC - Excelsior produces some settlers. Czar Lurking looks them over and is heard to mutter, "Jeesh, what a lousey group. The couldn't defend themselves against a rabbit, much less my wild and nasty cousins." Lurking tells the settlers to head toward Beta town to meet a group of spearmen who will escort them.

1625BC - Because of a military victory in Beta, the Russian people through the great Czar a party. A simple minded Russian designer gets it in his head that the palace needs a nice lawn. Czar Lurking doesn't dissuade him.

1575BC - What Lurking now considers a primitive band of Russian warriors again defend the town of Beta from the barbarian onslaughts. "We need to start getting aggressive with these vengeful barbarians," notes Lurking talking with his stupid military advisor.

1550BC - A settler, orginially from Excelsior, sets out with a group of spearman to make a new name for Russia somewhere west of Beta.

1450BC - The settler, and the escort of spearmen, continue west, finding no land that truely strikes their fancy. The warrior that has been defending Beta alone for years, gets relief from a group of spearmen. The warrior makes a pillgramige to see his mighty Czar. "I have served you well, Czar Lurking. I wish to make a name for myself by conquering the wilds of the northern Tundra. I will plat Russia's flag in the north where the wild stags run!" says the old, tired warrior. "Sounds good warrior," is all Lurking could say in response.

1375BC - The pitiful Russian scientists finally discover the Alphabet. Czar Lurking thinks the barbarians might have caught up to the Russians in terms of scientific acheivement. Lurking demands the wisemen of Russian look into the secrets of a round piece of wood to move things. The wisemen cannot comprehend the wood. "It seems like sometime to burn," was the best the wisemen could come up with. Lurking settled on researching Warrior Code.

1275 - Excelsior produces another settler. Alpaha, finally, finishes their granary. Excerpt from the book of Rus (1262BC) "... and among the only true men of this time of doubt and uncertainty was Lurking. Our Czar gave his upmost in trying to civilize the people of Mother Russia, but in the end he slew his closest advisor and went in search of adventure. The last place he was seen was northeast of Beta screaming, 'I will find the holy grail!'"

Will Lurking ever return from his quest? No one in Russia can say...

Pics uploaded and working OK. It looks like we're humming right along... but yegods what a spot we're in.

I see us going into the Middle Ages at least half an age behind in tech. Lurkburg is so far away corruption is going to render it almost useless until we get Republic. I think after mapmaking we should beeline for mysticism though, so that we can get temples and start closing up our borders.

Leaving some warriors around in the mountains to clean up barbarians wouldn't be a bad idea either.

City planning... it looks like we have room for maybe *8* more viable cities, using the land available. So, conservatively, that gives us 10.

Problems:

-Fresh water is at a premium. We have three lakes, and not a single river... looooong irrigation chains will be needed.

-Arable land is at a premium. Most of the north is tundra, and will need foresting to be useful.

-Finally, 10 cities really isn't enough against the AI, which likely has HUGE TRACTS OF LAND elsewhere in the world. We're going to need to get away, and start expanding on the mainland... and to do that we're going to need to move the palace, build an FP, etc.

-A military campaign using galleys is going to sink... err, I mean stink.

Strategy
You're right, this is not the best starting position in the world. Some random thoughts on strategy:

No AI civs means no free workers. I am accustomed to taking all the labor I need. We should probably make one city, perhaps Excelsior, into a full time worker production center so we can get started on the long irrigation chains that will be necessary..
We need to build the forbidden palace somewhere on this continent and then relocate the capital somewhere. We already know that we'll have a base of production here, so stick the FP here and move the captial when we expand. The best position for the FP would probably be somewhere between Lurkburg and Beta, don't you think?
We need to get The Wheel so we can locate horses.
No iron means no navy past the galleon, no swordsmen, no knights, and no railroads. Find some!
Um, no, we have 1 lake. The other two are completely useless for irrigation purposes because none of the surrounding terrain can be irrigated. We're lucky to have that lake, or we'd have all those plains and no irrigation until electricity.

All the more reason to get Map Making pronto. I think we only need to get writing before we can research it. Hopefully we can get a grip on the mainland before we have to fight for it.

yegods! You're right, I hadn't even noticed the other lakes were boxed off. Oh my, and it gets worse... we'll have to clear a lot of forest near Beta to get the chain around those hills.

It's too bad lumberjacking doesn't help with wonders

Looking back over your turns, Excelsior, we really got the shaft for goodie huts. A warrior, with basically nobody to use against, and maps for a landmass we would quickly have explored anyway.

Sigh. Maybe we should retitle this to the: EXTREME CHALLENGE 11.29.01 SUCCESSION GAME

Yeah, that's the problem with expansionist. It really stinks if you don't have a gigantic map with lots of space all around you. They need to change this is the patch. Expansionist needs some better advantages, like 50% faster population growth or something. Now that would be a good advantage in the early game.

Nah, an EXTREME CHALLENGE is where you get this map on Deity difficulty level and the AI invades with tanks while your citizens are just starting to figure out how to sharpen sticks.

(0)1250BC Just looking around. Searching for new building sites.
(1)1225BC Spotted barbarian activity north of Lurkburg. Sending warriors there.
(2)1200BC Seems like the first contact! An English warrior on the island to the west of Lurkburg.

Traded with the English: Masonry and Ceremonial burial for 60 gold. The science advisor says we are technologically advanced (!).
(3)1175BC We discover Warrior code. Starting work on Writing. Our conscript warrior attacks a barbarian village, wins the battle and becomes regular. The workers continue to irrigate the land. The scout continues to scout.
(4)1150BC Lurkburg builds a warrior. Burgundian encampment is dispersed. The warrior becomes Veteran, we receive 25 gold.
(5)1125BC Production in Beta is changed to a temple to take advantage of the gold deposit nearby the city.
(6)1100BC Ecelsior builds settlers. Work starts on Workers. A new town of Vovanville is founded.

It will probably serve as the place for the new Forbidden Palace. The English are contacted - they have no new technologies to give to us.
(7)1075BC A road to Vovanville and Lurkburg is being built.
(8)1050BC The settler is approaching the future city site. The warriors are scouting the island to keep it clear of barbarians.
(9)1025BC Same old, same old.
(10)1000BC A worker is finished in Excelsior. Starting to build a temple.
(11)975BC A settler is finished in Alpha. Starting a work on a temple.
(12)950BC Bought the knowledge of writing from the English for 30 gold. Now researching Mysticism.
(13)925BC The settlers (both of them) have arrived to their future settling sites.
(14)900BC A temple is rush-built in Alpha. The city of Gamma is founded.
(15)875BC A temple is rush-built in Beta.
(16)850BC The city of Delta is founded.
(17)825BC A worker is built in Lurkville. News come that the English are building the Pyramids.
(18)800BC The worker from Lurkburg starts improving the terrain.
(19)775BC The cultural influence of Alpha is expanding. The workers start irrigating the land around Excelior.
(20)750BC The cultural influence of Beta is expanding - we can now mine for gold!

Pics uploaded, although I had to kind of guess at the filename format (your zip file had them all uppercase, but your previous pictures were Ulower format, so that's what I used).

I will be out of town all weekend, so I won't be able to take my turn or handle screenshots until Monday morning. It's OK to skip me, if others can go before then.

The palace gates gave in with a mighty crack. The mighty iron gates were wrenched from the hinges as the tide of flesh surged through. The castle guards retreated into the castle, overwhelmed by the mass of hoes, pitchforks, and axes wielded carelessly, but lethally. The revolutionaries tore through the palace pursuing the fleeing guards, laying torch to all that could be burned. As the flames gutted the castle, the guards ran for their lives, outnumbered and outfought. Only Vovansim himself stayed to fight.

The mob crowded around him, pinning him in a corner. But rather than tear him to pieces, the mob stopped, apparently unwilling to pursue him further. For seconds that seemed to be hours, a tense stalemate reigned. Then, from the rabble, a man stepped forth brandishing a sword. In the darkness, he seemed to carry his own light, an aura that shone about him in the moonless night.

Vovansim lunged at him with a might swing of his broadsword. The man parried the blow swiftly, shifting his weight back then twirling about slashing his sword. Vovansim brought his sword about to shield the blow. With a resounding clang the swords collided and flew from their hands into the on-looking crowd.

As the flames from the burning palace grew near, Vovansim fell upon the other with animal viciousness. The mob fled the towering flames leaving the two men inside the inferno, each still set upon the destruction of the other. Soon, they could not be seen through the raging fires and the billowing smoke.

The smell of smoke filled the air. The burning palace lit the night sky, an enormous effigy to a dead king, a dead tyrant, and a dead era. From the midst of the flames came the man, seemingly unaffected by the firestorm that swirled around him. A beam of light streaked from the heavens, enveloping him in its radiance. The reign of Vovansim the Cruel had ended.

Long live Excelsior Deus, the God King! Leader of the Russian People!

Turn #1>730BC
The God King decrees that a road shall be built to connect the newly founded city of Gamma to the rest of the Russian Empire. He further decrees that a road shall be built to connect Lurkburg to Vovanville.
Turn #2>710BC
The Russian people have discovered the secrets of Mysticism! The God King decrees that his sages should begin work on Map Making, so that the Russian people may learn to navigate the seas.
Turn #3-4>690-670BC
The God King marries the God Queen. He declares a national holiday in celebration.
Turn #5>650BC
The city of Excelsior completes the Royal Temple. The God King calls for volunteers in Excelsior to join the Royal Ditchdiggers.
Turn #6>630BC
Vovanville completes the training of another Ditchdigging Corps. Delta finishes training a local band of warriors for service in the town's defense and begins to train another Ditchdigging Corps.
Turn #7>610BC
The God King is pleased to see that the Ditchdigging Corps has completed the road from Beta to Vovanville. The city of Alpha revolts! The citizens of Alpha are still angry because of their treatment under Vovansim the Cruel. The God King directs the city to begin a public theater program to calm the populace. The city of Excelsior completes a Ditchdigging Corps and begins to train pioneers.

Turn #8>590BC
Alpha completes a settler; the formerly unhappy people of Alpha set off to begin a new life elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the city, more emigration is looming. Beta completes the training of a Spearman Corps that is sent west to reinforce the city of Vovanville. The road from Lurkburg to Vovanville has been completed, as has the road to Gamma; the God King expresses his satisfaction with the efficiency of the Royal Ditchdiggers. He directs them to now connect Vovanville to Delta. He also directs them to begin irrigating the area surrounding Gamma.
Turn #9,10, & 11>570-530BC
A God Prince is born, but dies within the year. Two God Princesses are born thereafter, but neither lives to come of age. Unhappy with his failing marriage, the God King takes a mistress. Meanwhile, the Royal Ditchdiggers continue to toil for the good of Russia.
Turn #12>510BC
The city of Epsilon is founded near Beta. The city begins the training of spearmen to defend the city from barbarians and invaders.

Turn #13>490BC
The city of Gamma completes a Spearman defense force and begins training a Ditchdigging Corps. Emigration from Excelsior proceeds apace as a new group of settlers sets out into the wild unknown. The God King's advisors report that corruption in the outer cities of the Russian Empire has reached such intolerable levels that building a Forbidden Palace would be advisable.
Turn #14-15>470-450BC
The Royal Ditchdiggers continue their labors, but this an otherwise boring time.
Turn #16>430BC
Delta completes the training of a new Ditchdiggers Corps and begins the construction of a great temple to honor the God King Excelsior Deus.
Turn #17>410BC
Word comes that a distant people known as the Germans have built The Oracle! The God King is not pleased.

Turn #18>390BC
Gamma trains a Ditchdigging Corps and begins the construction of a shrine to the God King. The God King receives word that the Royal Treasury is losing money! The monetary policies that have been in place since the reign of Vovansim or even earlier are hopelessly out of date and must be replaced. The God King lowers the science rate to 60%.
Turn #19>370BC
Alpha sends out more pioneers. The God King decides to commission a great work in his honor. A magnificent colossus shall be built in the city of Alpha. The colossus shall forever stand as a testament to the greatness of the God King!
Turn #20>350BC
Not satisfied with merely one monument in his honor, the God King decrees that an enormous pyramid shall be constructed to glorify the God King for all eternity. The pyramid begins construction in the city of Excelsior.

Not long thereafter, the Russian Mystics report that they have divined the secret of Map Making. Soon, the Russian people will control the seas! The God King demands that they begin work on an idea he discovered while visiting the English years ago, The Wheel.

The God King was now in failing health, his constant coughing heralding his imminent demise. One morning he was found lifeless in his bed, his journey through life now completed. Excelsior Deus, the God King was dead. In a final act of reverence for their fallen God, a group of Russian settlers found a new city and christen it "Excelsior Memorialis."

The state of the world in 350BC:

I don't know how that happened. When they left me they were in ULower format. I even checked to be sure. Oh, the "Mapmaking.jpg" was actually intended to be "Mapmakng.jpg." I use 8 character names mostly and mapmaking is 9 characters so I trimmed it. I still use file manager (its so much better than explorer) and it can't handle filenames greater than 8 characters.

If Lurking finishes before Monday then maybe you can swap places with Vovansim for this turn. Is that all right with you Vovansim?

Legends of Czar Goat!
Lurking is rumored to have fathered some sons by a barbarian woman sometime after he went missing on a "great quest." The decendants of these children are the people know know as "Farm Tribe." Among these barbaric people a true leader emerged. He was known as Goat. With Goat's large geographic influence, the leadership of Russia welcomed him as a new ruler. They assumed he would have as much good judgement as his forebearers. His russian reign follows:

330BC - Settlers from established russian cities head north to found new townships. Russian warriors patrol to area in search of suitable building sites.

290BC - Beta produces a new group of settlers who wait for escort to head west toward Lurkburg.

270BC - Lurkburg produces the 1st russian galley!

250BC - Warriors and group of russian people intent of settling a new landmass load onto the rickety galley. Hopefully we can find some important resources on this landmass. Russian wisemen assume that the "Wheel" will now be feasible. The begin to look into a new beast known as a "horse".

230BC - The settlers and group of warriors land on the new island/continent west of Lurkburg!

210BC - The galley sails south after dropping off the russian people. The galley's crew makes contact with some English military in a coastal city. They report that the English have tons of scientific advances that the barbaric Russian government has never even imagined...

190BC - Czar Goat sends word to give the English whatever they demand as long as we get a few new technologies. The russian Czar gets a decent deal, aquiring Mathematics, Code of Laws, and Literature. The great Czar Goat has to give up his world map and some gold for this exchange. He seems satisfied for now.

170BC - New Excelsior founded on English continant. Barbarians surrond the city quickly. Will the primitive warrior defends be enough for the new city?

130BC - Workers bring irrigation through Epsilon. The Czar nods his head in approval, one day the great russian irrigation network will reach as far west as Lurkburg.

50BC - Russian settlers, escorted by a small group of spearmen head out of Gamma aboard the old russian galley. "Go East!" screams Czar Goat, "found a new city in my great grandfather's name!"

30BC - Russian settlers, along with their new friends in the russian military, land on the new eastern landmass. What will this hold for us?

10BC - Czar Goat receives devistating news. Egyptians have completed the Great Pyramids!

AD10 - New Lurkburg founded on the Eastern continent. The good news reaches Czar Goat just in time. The shaman predict the Czar will only last a year at most...

AD30 - The great capital of Excelsior switches production to the Great Wall, the old czar dies peacefully. The legacy of the Russians continue...

The state of our world (western section):

eastern section:

Good luck!

Good work. The English seemed a lot more stingy during my reign. They asked for my world map plus 90 gold (my entire treasury) just for The Wheel!

The God King declares a crusade! Excelsior vult!

Really, that stinks. Funny that the Egyptians built the Pyramids, though.

You switched to the Great Wall? Why not the Great Library? It is far more useful than the Great Wall even with a tech lead simply because it keeps the AI from getting free technology.

The great whatever
I also think the Great Library would be good. In retrospect, I think I would have switched to the Great Library. I have a feeling we'll get either one or the other, and the Great Library would be a plus since we're a bit behind in technology. To my successor:

We must expand on both continents. I left New Excelsior, on the western continant (with the English), undefended. I sent a warrior over with the settler, but right after I built the city.... the barbarian hordes decended. They killed the warrior defender and are now plundering without shame. We need to get a spearman over there ASAP.

Keep the game moving at this speedy pace! It'll be a challege to win in this game. Our Russian people are developing decently, considering our crappy starting position.

Sorry, I had lots of things to do and didn't have time to check this thread. So, I didn't know that it was my turn already. Sorry for the delays. I have finished my turn now, though.

Vovansim II
(0) 30AD Just looking around. Giving orders to the workers and the spearman near New Lurkburg. Contacted Elizabeth. Wanted to get some contacts or technology from her, but she does not want any reasonable deals.
(1) 50AD Excelsior memorials finishes a worker. Lurkburg finishes a galley. Improving land, exploring the world.
(2) 70AD Continuing to explore the lands. Found a new good city site. Barbarians attack the city of New Lurkburg, but are not successful, for there is a spearman defending it.
(3) 90AD Met an Egyptian warrior.

Got their World map in exchange for our world map and some gold.

(4) 110AD Rome has completed the Great Library. The Egyptians are building the Great Wall. Changed production in Beta to the Great Lighthouse. The Seljuk tribe near New Lurkburg has taught us the secrets of Polytheism. Dispersed a Burgundian encampment to the north of St. Lurking.
(5) 130AD London has finished the Great Wall! Settlers are built in Epsilon and Lurkburg.
(6) 150AD Holy... 21 horsemen approaching New Excelsior! And it has not yet built a spearman! And it only has the population of one! Also met the Germans. They are annoyed with us (?) Well, we trade our world map for their world map, contact with Greeks and Romans, and some gold. The Greeks have nothing whatsoever to give us. We get Currency from the Romans, however. We also enter the new age, and discover Monotheism. Cool.
(7) 170AD Excelior is finished building a Coliseum (from what is left from our Great Wall project). It starts building settlers. Vovanville finishes a temple and starts building a library. A spearman and a settler are moved to the English island to found a new settlement.
(8) 190AD More settlers are being sent to the new lands. Homeland is being improved.
(9) 210AD Gamma, Mosfrog, and Lurkburg all finish their spearmen. They all start building cultural buildings. The city of St.Petersburg is founded. A lot of gold there + horses.
(10) 230AD A temple is built in Delta. Starting work on a new spearman.
(12) 250AD Barbarians approach New Lurkburg. Excelsior builds a settler.
(13) 260AD Seven Hun Horsemen attack New Lurkburg. Our defender becomes a veteran.
(14) 270AD Some more barbarian activity. All the known world leaders are contacted. None of them has a technology to offer to us! What a pity.
(15) 280AD Unheard of number of barbarians attacks New Lurkburg. The defender is promoted to Elite.
(16) 290AD Gamma builds a galley to transport our settlers.
(17) 300AD Settlers are brought to the island of New Lurkburg.
(18) 310AD Moscow is founded. A source of incense will soon be ours.
(19) 320AD The English have established an embassy in our capital.
(20) 330AD Excelsior has finished the library and now is working on a new settler. The settlers to the north-east of New Lurkburg are moving to the site of a new settlement.

I have been out sick with an ear infection AND strep throat for the last three days. I just got my home network up and running, so I will be able to post pics and take my turn later this evening.

are you playing?
fsck,
Are you playing? If not, perhaps you should be skipped. Your 72 hours are about up. Excelsior, if fsck doesn't reply in 3 hours, why don't you go ahead and play. fsck should feel better by the time his next turn comes around. I hope fsck won't be upset. Thanks and good game everyone. This game is a challenge.

I can't play until 4:30 or 5:00 CST anyway, so I'll start playing then if we haven't heard from fsck.
