possible combat system tweak..
give all modern units by default a bombardment value. purists may argue that each square may represent 200 x 200 miles of terrain, but two units next to each other are still next to each other (presumably scouts would make contact and skirmish, raiding parties sent out...)

ideally each unit would have a ranged attack value and a close attack firepower - so a rifleman would have great ranged attack value but when they attack into another square or are attacked in their own square by a neighbouring unit it switches to the "CQB" value.

Impis therefore would get a hail of bullets before they can even attack... yet at close quarters they will be a match for the rifleman !

How about having the following menu when you start the game:

Combat:

- Like Civ1 (no HP/FP). For those who like it "hard".

- Like Civ2 (HP/FP with perhaps a couple of very minor stats tweaks). For those who like it "fair".

- Like Civ3 (HP + BRF). For those who like it "realistic/broken/crazy"*.

- Customise the units yourself.

?

Works for me.

(* the jury's still out on this one)
